How to Carry a Deer on Your Back | With MeatEater's Clay Newcomb
มุมมอง 6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
We all know that once a deer hits the ground the real work begins. Typically, our options for a getting our venison back to the truck are pretty simple-drag it out or quarter it up and haul it out piece by piece. However, there is a third option. You can carry the deer on your back. I learned this old method from James Lawrence, a 72-year-old veteran whitetail hunter from the mountains of Arkan...

How to Pack a Mule with a Sawbuck Saddle
มุมมอง 3.8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Using a sawbuck and panyards is one of the simplest ways to pack a horse or mule. Place a saddle pad atop a well-groomed horse or mule. The sawbuck sits on top of the pad, much like a saddle. The britchen comes around the rear end, the breast collar secures the front, and the cinch fastens around the gut. This ensures that your load will remain well-balanced on your pack animal. #fueledbynature...

Steve Shares his Ultimate Garage Organization Setup
มุมมอง 155Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Psychological peace can be found in many places; the side of a mountain, the bottom of the ocean, even in your own garage. So, how can a place that holds the most gear, tools, and stuff provide any sense of mental clarity? Thoughtful organization. Clam guns for the win!
I want a video of all the times Steve puts his own personal pronunciations on words. Also everytime he says javelina.
Nice a deer backpack lol
This episode is the best version of Steve I've ever seen. Fantastic content as always. Meateater can't be touched.
Great vid, Steve! 💪 Question: can you tell which brand is the gun maintenance holder at 2:28 (th-cam.com/video/NkDXDs1mJOo/w-d-xo.html)? Thanks!!!
Background Music ist very annoying
hello if anyone could tell me the type of tree set up clay was using in this video i would greatly appreciate it
Anyone have a line on any good mule folks? I've been looking for one for a long time.
It would be cool to see what he actually likes or if he actually has opinions on things. It's seems like it's just a commercial for all brands he's affiliated with.

Yall should hire wrestlers for this job, they would grab that thing like its 5 pounds
I would have never taken him for the organized sort.
Meh.. Not my thing. Would rather have a 6 lug mark 5.
300 win mag ! Weatherby! Vortex! Just can’t go wrong with that! Good stuff and enjoy the spring bear hunting
Clay, What are you running for ammo?
If I’m not mistaken, meat eater guys are sponsored my federal premium and have their own line of ammunition so if I had to guess it would either be that or the terminal ascent loads
Sweet gun Clay
The unbridled jealousy and envy of some of you fellas is pathetic. Instead of bitching go get a job and buy your self some nice stuff. Not one of you would say that to his face. Cause you know what would happen.
👍👍👍
Man I wish I would have known that back in December! Had to carry him out of a clearcut like Santa!🎅🇺🇸🦌
Search for the NZ (New Zealand) back pack method. Much faster.
This was his first time. After a few days on the job he can easily take two at a time
I will definitely try this next deer hunt, thanks Clay!
Nice tour! I have an old school pencil sharpener up in my garage too. Having a sharp pencil is important!
Very underrated comment! Nothing worse than a dull pencil when working on a project.
Clay, Excelente tip… gracias, saludos desde Yucatán, México…
Nice Its sweet to see how "self explanatory" the whole system is....
But... where are the saws, drill press, belt grinder, welder and anvil? What kind of garage is this, anyway?! I do get a hard on for that kind of organization, though.
Can you speak to the amount of exercise time that you or any of meat eater team keep up with regularly to feel confident in the woods?
Thanks Clay!
Long live simplicity..
Good man Steve
Where are the man tools? I saw a wrench. Chop saw? Drill press? Table saw?
Got a weatherby element half off on a killer sale. Love the shotgun but it was too long for myself. Weatherby does not offer a youth or cut down stock for this shotgun as it isnt even made by weatherby. None the less, against manufacturer recomenation, i cut it down myself and put a grind to fit stock on it. Shoots great and fits great. For a budget 20 guage its pretty nice and id recommended it.
Steve dresses like me.
I had to watch to see if I’ve been doing it different from a pro. The only difference is I run my thumb nail from back to front down the spine instead of using a knife to clear the clot.
Nice work Cal!!
Is Clay running an Carlson’s or Indian Creek choke tube in his actual hunts? In this video he says Carlson’s but in the Missouri hunt and in the Spring Turkey Tips and Tricks he is rocking an Indian Creek choke. Which one is he actually using? Asking because I have an element which I am turning into a turkey gun and there is not a lot of media on it.
I run carlson's in everything, zero issues with great patterns you can't go wrong.
First lite has a ton of sales throughout the year and that helps out. Yes it’s expensive but I’ve been wearing their stuff for years and the majority of it is top notch. Only had a few pieces that I didn’t care for. Their base layers are worth it.
Read Steve's books, and you'll find him a thoughtful and honest observer of hunting lore and techniques, and environmental issues. I don't care if he's sponsored by (or owns) First Lite. I've got a couple of warm FL items, bought on sale. They are great, but if you don't pay attention to the wind and step on every crunchy thing in your path, $1,000 worth of gear on your back won't make any difference Maybe it's my advanced age, but when I was a boy, Weatherby was the gun for effete rich guys. Always wondered why he chose that brand. What brand should he have chosen? I don't know, I have an ancient Ruger 77, II, bought new for $325, and it's all I need.
Weatherby is by far in the affordable high quality range these days is why, you really cant get rifles that are quality with yesteryears pricing anymore. Any true iron worth a darn now days is gonna run a heafty pricetag, lots of fellas I know are spending way more than a vanguard or the newer models run .
I like it for lots of reasons, first of all they pay me to…
You Jokers do realize that Rinella owns First Lite, right?
Yeah we know and don’t care. It’s good stuff.
I’ve had Sitka stuff and first lite and I chose first lite it’s honestly good durable stuff
I don't have an issue with the products in the video, in fact i think they're excellent products. But i do have an issue with the items not being linked and prices mentioned, especially if they were provided for review. There were WAY too many products from the same First Lite company for this NOT to be a sponsored video. You legally have to disclose that, so this video is shady with that being the case. The FTC could give you hell for this. Always disclose that content is sponsored or products are provided for free.
Too bad that stopped making the cypher pattern
Right! It was the best!
Good video, but some things to keep in mind 1) Ideally you use a pack pad (30x44) which comes further down your stock's side, protecting them from the load rubbing their side. 2) Your panniers are hanging quite low and if you're packing anything very heavy, it puts extra pressure on the animals ribs, making it harder for them to breathe, and increasing the likelihood of soring your stock. 3) It's a good idea to lash your load down. If the animal jumps or bucks, you have the potential of your panniers coming off the crossbuck and dragging/swinging. That's when wrecks happen. A simple box hitch is easy, quick, and will eventually save you some headaches. Nothing will turn you off of packing more than soring or injuring your animal in a preventable situation. Most important though, get out there, enjoy the outdoors, take care of your stock, and breathe some fresh air.
You don’t need to buy all this all at once if you aren’t serious about hunting and you can’t make the investment don’t go after a guy who makes a bit of a sacrifice to be comfortable in the field
Face toward the their head when you reach underneath for the cinch Clay. If they reach up to swat a fly with their back foot they could get your teeth 👉
Idk why people are hating. This is his profession. If all yall went into the woods daily you’d want the best stuff too. This isn’t something old boy who hunts on the weekends with an 870 and some mossy oak needs. This is for the guy who eats sleeps and breathes the outdoors. Someone who needs to be successful because it’s his livelihood. Take a step back and really ponder on why he needs these things instead of I can’t afford that!
Plus, how can you complain. If you got first lite and Sitka gear for free you’d wear it wouldn’t you? 😂
You don't have to specify you wear "Men's" drawers on hunting trips...or maybe you do, I don't judge.
Its really not all that expensive... jesus stop complaining. If you worked in his industry you would too
for a mere $18,000 you to could have the same gear! 👌🏼
I have been buying First Lite gear since college, where I was a very broke college kid. But I ditched my toxic girlfriend back then and started investing in gear that made my hunting pursuits more comfortable. They have generous sales and I mean OFTEN. If you're serious about hunting, and you care about having nice gear so you can focus on the hunting part - buy first lite gear. If not, go to walmart, freeze your ass off, and shut your yapper!
Pretty sure you spend a lot of money on nonsense every year. 😂
Steve goes into the woods wearing a mortgage payment, super relatable.
