Good Food Movement
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 ม.ค. 2024
"What we eat has changed more in the last forty years than in the previous forty thousand" - Eric Schlosser, Fast Food Nation. It's been close to 25 years since Schlosser first wrote the revolutionary book. And in these years, our food system has depleted even further. The Good Food Movement is an initiative to encourage people to look beyond first impressions, think about their food choices, ask questions, realise the impact, and make decisions that support a healthier and sustainable food system. In essence, you can safeguard the future of the planet by making responsible decisions on what goes onto your plates.
Can we grow Ragi using organic farming methods?
In this episode of Rootmaps, Shashi Kumar explains the traditional way of growing Ragi using only organic methods. The intercropping practice - called Akkadi Salu in Karnataka - involves growing Ragi with a combination of legumes, pulses, oilseeds, trees and shrubs. Livestock also play a key role in what is often considered a labour-intensive practice.
Today, as Shashi points out, farmers have moved away from these practices to adopt mono cropping which is easier for mechanised farming but not necessarily better for the nature or our health. Modern methods are also overreliant on inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides.
Traditional practices such as Akkadi Salu also help farmers mitigate risks such as erratic rainfall, degrading soils, and unpredictable markets. With climate crisis now a lived reality, farmers might be well advised to opt for diversity in crops. It also means a year-long supply of nutrition to the farmers.
But will farmers actually go back to these practices?

Very informative video. The idea of akkadi salu is multi purpose. To name important, 1)pest control ,with mixed crops pests gets confused ,akkadi saalu acts as a barrier. 2)easily u grow additional crops 3) u get different feed 4 animals be it wet n dry. Our ancestors r very intelligent n practical people, Traditional forming means co existence, n job for all n healthy peaceful leaving. We have moved away without understanding all this.
This is spot on

This is amazing! Traditional farming is not “the future “, it is and has always been the only way too survive as species. What we call conventional farming now is just an experiment being tried for a few decades, with very poor results! But in the grand scheme such growing methods were the only option for us so sustain civilizations, and in the future it will remain so!
So true. We need to urgently grow back to methods there were sustainable. Today there is no scope for regeneration.

There is one proverb in kannada ಅಣ್ಣೆ ಸೊಪ್ಪು ಬೆಳವಲ್ಲಿ ಉಣ್ಣಕ್ಕೆ ಬರ ಇಲ್ಲ mening in places where annesoppu grows there will be no scarcity for food
This is very fascinating. I had not heard of annesoppu before this video.
So beautiful isn't? Yet a lot of us perceive it as a weed.
Ragi mudde is part of our daily meals
That's very good. We also provide Mudde in our community kitchens
