I like david's story about him realizing he wasn't that good at being a lawyer, nor even knew what leveraged buy outs were when he set out to start Carlyle; he couldn't even find some finance guys to start a firm with so he can become legal counsel. All he knew was the time he spent at washington meant that he knew more about regulations than most investment firms. I guess the lesson I get from him is there will be tons of opportunities in life, make sure you're atleast good at one thing because that's enough to get the ball rolling; also keep reading the news/books about what you're interested in, that's how david found his opportunity in leveraged buyouts.

Super informative. Thanks! Would have been better if you had continued to include the ‘wins’ for African Americans in the last four decades. I’m glad you pointed out the continued challenges but you skipped massive gains in the last several decades as well. To be taken seriously you have to be objective.
