Fishing with Max - Personal Best Rainbow Trout at Lake Cachuma
The boys are off for Christmas break, so I took Max and his buddy, Lucas, out for an afternoon sesh at Lake Cachuma to scout the banks and search for holding bass and trout. It was amazing to see how far the water level has come down. Winter has kicked in here for the past few weeks, with temps dropping into the low 40s and high 30s inland. Which means Cachuma has cooled a bit (water temp was around 60 degrees where we fished) and some bigger fish have likely moved out, although it was 80 degrees when we headed out.
I hooked up on a Largemouth but it spit the hook. Soon after, I was stoked to land my personal best (PB) Rainbow, a holdover stockey, which you can see. I caught it on a Z-Man Ned Rig (1/8 Finesse Shroomz jig head) with a TRD Finesse plastic called "The Deal." Links below...

While Lucas didn't get on the board, he certainly earned his chops. He's just learning to fish and we love taking him. He's patient and persistent - great traits for an angler. His day will come when he hooks that Largemouth hog at Cachuma, and I can't wait to see it this coming Spring.
Highlight of the day was probably our drive back down the mountain. Visibility was easily 40 miles if not more, making for an incredible sunset view across the horizon and Channel Islands.
This will likely be my last video for 2024. Hopefully, Santa will bring me a GoPro for Christmas, so I can capture more fishing action.
Happy Holidays to you and yours, and thanks for watching.

Halloween Aspen Grove: Acrylic on canvas painting

Inspired by a recent fishing trip to South Lake and Parker Lake located in the Eastern Sierra, where there are mind-blowing Aspen tree groves this time of year, I whipped up this painting for our annual Halloween party.

Along with a passion for fishing, I enjoy some downtime by painting in my office. They’re inspired by visions from fishing trips to the Eastern Sierra. Here’s a work in progress of an acrylic desert painting, which highlights the beautiful light and neon colors to capture the spirit of an electric desert at sunset.

If you don’t mind me asking how you got there ? Did you have to walk from the docks thst trail ?
@@andrewoudinarath7618 There are multiple ways to access the trails around the lake. Check out Google Maps, for example, and you’ll see.
Amazing catch Chris!
@@VINCEGOESFISHING thanks Vince 🤙🏼
Красиво! Отлично снято!😊👍
Nice 😼
I did this hike today! But I only got to the first Gem Lake as I was too tired. Still, a great hike! Cold in the morning, but temps in the 60's in the afternoon. Glad I started in the morning, seeing the rising Sun's light on the peaks and the air so clear. I spent the prior day at Mammoth Lakes to get acclimated. Happy Hiking! Andy
@@andycochran-f3d - Any afternoon showers?
@@cheinemann_805 Nope, no showers. Andy
Chris this is so awesome. I really enjoyed this. Instant sub. I like how you addressed us to start and then took us along!
I think it’s time for a GoPro so I can better capture the fishing action. Appreciate the comment. 🤙🏼
@@cheinemann_805 I use a GoPro for a lot of my stuff, definitely helps. I’d recommend a water proof case if you do though. Took mine spear fishing and the water got in the battery compartment.
Awesome video! would like to see more of the actual fishing and rig.
Yep, I need a GoPro! Gonna make it happen to capture more fishing action. Tough to fly-fish with an iPhone in one hand. Rig was a 9ft 5x rod, 5x leader with a 5x tippet to an Elk Hare Caddis (sizes 14-16). I’ll do better to show more fishing action in future videos. Thanks for watching.
Great ramble thanks for taking us along
Magnificent! Why has it been almost 20 yrs since I've been up there? Thanks for the vid and the inspiration to get up there again soon.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What area is it?
Wow what a crazy sized fish to catch from the surf!
@@HennyFishing 44” and 22lb White Sea Bass (aka “ghost”)…was a heckuva fight. Hit my lure about 20ft from shore. Was crazy!
This place looks brilliant man! 🥾🙏
@@ervinslens it’s special…if you ever get the opportunity, GO!
Nice, always wondered if they would work on salmon. Now I will try it here in the Puget sound this year.
Do you just need a regular fishing license to catch on the beach?
@deadlymate5974 - Hi there and thanks for watching. Yes, you do need a signed and valid California fishing license to fish from the surf. You can purchase a license from most sporting good stores and/or online at wildlife.ca.gov/Licensing/Online-Sales
Thank you! I don’t know much about ocean fishing just wanted to make sure I can with my license.
Next time your up on the area I usually use mouse tails on that river the part on lime St
I typically fly fish and sometimes throw some spinners on the Owens. I've never used mouse tails on the river, but I'm always open to trying new baits. I did use mouse tails this past weekend at Convict Lake and slayed them!
Thank You! What lures do you think would work in convict lake? I’ve tried spoons and flies but haven’t caught lots.
@@deadlymate5974 Mini jigs, like the ones by Sierra Slammers (www.sierraslammers.com), are great, but you've got to be out deep enough so they can be tough to fish from the bank. Spinners and Spoons (Panther Martin, Rooster Tails, Thomas Buoyant) are great choices and you can typically cast them a long way on an ultra-light rod and reel set up using anywhere from 2-6lb test. We had really good luck last weekend using Berkley floating power worms (we were cutting the heads off our mouse tails and just using the red worm. Red is a killer color! Check out these trout worms from Sierra Slammers (www.sierraslammers.com/product-page/trout-worms-vivid). Rig up the worms with a split shot and you'll get hit, I promise you. I heard the lake was just stocked today with 600lbs of trout. Nine of them are tagged for a chance to win prizes. Have fun!
Do you think they might be bass at the dock at vacuums right now I’m going next week
Or crappie
@@deadlymate5974 - There's always a good chance that bass will be hanging out under docks for protection, and also so they can surprise strike their prey. My recommendation is to rent a boat so you can get back into coves where the water is warming up and bass are getting more active.
Yooooo!!! How awesome! Chris, can I make screenshots and post this on the Battlestar accounts with link to your TH-cam channel? Also, what is your IG User if you want me to tag it. And also what are your favorite tackle shops so I can tag them too.
Hey man, what website was that with the fishing reports?
Hi 👋. - I didn’t reference a website in video but I do know that the largemouth bass are in close. They’re spawning and feeding on massive shad bait balls. We’ve seen it at Cachuma and Casitas. Hope that helps…
I loved this video
Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for more.
