Laid Back Homesteader
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 เม.ย. 2022
My name is Peter. I live in Northern Ireland. In February 2022 I purchased 4.25 acres of rural land. I hope to create a more self-reliant lifestyle for my family. I aim to have birds for both and meat and eggs to grow vegetables in a no-dig market garden using regenerative agricultural practices. Eventually I would like to own pigs, sheep and even a cow!
The first section of work entails making an entrance onto the land and converting an area into a yard. I will then develop the site further with fencing, farm buildings etc.
This is not going to happen over a few videos. All infrastructure needed to make this lifestyle a reality is self-funded. My goal, to create a place where my wife and I can make lots of memories with our kids aged 8, 4 and 2 to watch their personalities develop having lots of fun experiences on the farm.
I will document the homestead transformation and place it on TH-cam. Maybe inspiring you to do the same...

Good job, Great workshop. Would love one of those cranes 👍.
The crane would definitely come in handy
Trevor’s got quite a well equipped shop. That looks like a very sturdy trailer. It doesn’t seem to match your tow vehicle though.😎 Have a good week, Pete.
Hi Gregg. If I had a bigger towing vehicle I'd probably have a bigger trailer! 😆 🤣 😂
Yes, a big work shop with all the tools hard to beat. When I was told I could use the shed I jumped at the chance.
I say you should make that a ramp door. I made mine that it can be split and made normal
You've come a long way in the last few years, Pete. You've accomplished a lot of things you talked about in this early video. Cheers!
Thanks Gregg. We're Building the dream!
I used to make hay racks but the bar's give up u won't be able to use with sheep they will go straight through them stock netting over or reweld they will fall apart mate
Thanks for the heads up I'll have to keep an eye on them. I used them the other day. They make live a bit handier when working alone. The sheep are less panicked because they have more room
@@LaidBackHomesteader to save hay I used tied up for cow's and heifers etc as what I thought would hold the welds ain't very strong. I think I realised why they couldn't be used to hold in stock.... I wouldn't recommend it for penning pallets are heavy but won't fall apart if ran into they explored the bars when they give up I remember trying string and even welding they blow apart
I'm only using the panels to guide the livestock 🐑 into a pen or trailer. Or to make a temporary pen when screening them.
Excellent video. Thank you.
Your welcome.
Good watch Pete
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the struggle !
Looks like some good engineering to me! The weather looked pretty nice that day also.
Cheap and cheerful Gregg. Works a treat too!
Your stretched Peter another good watch
Not enough hours in the day lol. Thanks Jim, glad to here you enjoyed it.
The sides have turned out well. Heavy duty style!
Its added a bit of weight alright but also making the trailer alot stronger. That patch should see me through to retirement lol
Nice work! It was great meeting you at the conference and may your adventures be blessed and your vision realized!
I had a great time at the conference and really enjoyed meeting you too! There was so many like-minded people I spoke to that I missed most of the speakers talking 😆
It will howl a bucket of stuff peter
It definitely will and I'll not have to change any more broken boards. Stronger than ever Jim
Looks like that's going to be a very sturdy trailer!
Sure is. Just need to remember that next time I start filling it so I don't pull the tow ING hitch off the car lol
Ouch!! Poor trailer.😢
Lol that was the handy way to remove those boards. It give me room to get the grinder in
May I suggest make the tail door twice a long. Sheep and quad will go in easier. I had to get detachable side gates for the rear. Best buy ever. If you add them you will definitely thank me.
I was working on the trailer today. It will be in the next two videos. I think you'll like my detachable sides diy. Ive lessened the incline without lengthening the tail gate. She a tailor made trailer 😆
Wow! The Laid Back Homesteader didn’t look to laid back when he was kicking the fooey out of that trailer. Lol. Waiting to see the finished project. Pete, why don’t you check on a lapel microphone that attaches to your lapel or pocket or hat. Of course I don’t know if you can find one that works with your phone or camera. 👍
Is the soumd bad in places? With all the physical work you'll hear me panting lol. I have one I'll look for it and give it a go.
@@LaidBackHomesteader No it’s not bad. I just thought it would be easier for you. You can talk in a normal voice without having to worry about how far you’re away from the camera or phone.
@@gregganderson1454 I use a gopro hero 9. Its old and has alot of hours on the clock but still works good though bring knocked over quite a few times. Im actually on my third camera stand. You know the saying buy cheap buy twice? Took two cheap options before learning that fact lol. Ill bring it out again next ime im working by myself. Thanks for the feedback Gregg. I learning form feedback so much support on this channel thanks again!
That’s going to make some great compost.
Fingers crossed 🤞
As rough as a badgers arse .
Can you explaun how it works?
It's a gravity feed nipple drinker for poultry. Chickens touch the nipples on the pipe and water stored in a header tank comes out. Animals can't dirty the water supply making it safer to drink
If it's raining ,wear wet gear ,sorted.
Corners first buddy! Fair play to ye.
First row Im just trying to work out the spacing. Im going to build the corners next Thanks
Another great video Peter 😊
Glad you enjoyed it. I was worried about my sheep that morning.
Great video, Pete. Lots of variety going on there.
Hi Gregg. I was driving about like a lunatic hoping not to find a sheep vs car crash
Morning mate, new format of videos is spot on. Good content as always…
Thanks Ian. I'm glad your enjoying g watching it. There's plenty more to follow!
Why would you want to make a video on something that you know absolutely nothing about? Feel sorry for the truck driver looking on at the bullshit
It's because I enjoy making a video and replying to comments lol
Surprised you're not rained off in that torrential downpour 😉
There be many a shed full of men today lol
As long as you don't end up arse over tit😂
What breed are you using ? The commercial hybrids have a wee habit of dropping dead as they get closer to killing weights , and while a few pigs will take care of the bodies , its still expensive pig food
It definitely would be when the chickens are almost ready to harvest. I'm using commercial boilers. I got the eggs from a farmer and hatched them out myself. When it was all said and done from 60 eggs I have 29 in the freezer. I did a video last week of the entire process. Egg to plate. Have a look and let me know what you think. Thanks
Y el anclaje?!?!😳🤦♂️👎
Mortar and and weight of the wall will secure it
@@LaidBackHomesteader busca la asesoría de un profesional!
Ok thanks
@@LaidBackHomesteader Lmbo, no pard. The weight and mortor will not hold it in place.
Aslong as it doesn't retain it shouldn't need anchoring here in the UK and Ireland we build different to other countries. But one thing I would say is set 1 block in each corner and use your line to straighten them out if not making profiles to 3,4,5 and make everything square
Hi, Pete
Are you enjoying the youtube shorts? I'm trying to keep ye entertained 😅
@@LaidBackHomesteader Sure. Even though I’ve already seen the longer ones. I hope they help your numbers.
@gregganderson1454 It seems to be working so far. I'm actually not doing the short content. I have another guy that does that for me. He wdited a few videos a while back, but it wasn't working out. Did you notice any changes?
@@LaidBackHomesteader Can’t say I have. I know the editing of your recap video was a pain for someone!
@@gregganderson1454 it definitely was. Ive started another project which will take a few days but im going to upload it in stages now that you've reminded me lol. Thanks for the feedback and continued support! 👍
Looking at your body shape and new work clothes you definately didnt do all the work there!!!!
Watch a few more videos to see if your right.
From egg to table fair play for documenting the whole journey. Very interesting watching the whole process and for someone who has never done anything like that before makes it all the more interesting 👏
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Mix a load of grass with it or manure just make sure to turn more frequently as it will get hot. Don’t let it get above 70 degrees Celsius 😁🌱
I'm going to look into getting some green material at this point it's.kind of stopped composting I think too much carbon. Thanks
@@LaidBackHomesteader no problem good luck I know wood chips are hard to compost. As they are 99% carbon or something like that so plenty of nitrogen is needed 😁
good job. Very realistic. Maybe a take that tarp and make a little rain roof from the container.
I'm currently building a shed on that concrete slab.it will have a solar roof giving me a better power supply than the genie 😀
Great video, it’s good to see the process done here . Sometimes you don’t know if the American set up will work in our climate. The traffic cones were a stroke of genius . Just wondering would you do it again or was it too much bother ?
Oh I would already have started another batch only for a planned trip the Homesteaders of America Conference this October. The birds thrive on grass. If you were to try it get in touch I'm here to help
And also if changing the avant attachment if you crowd bucket right back to cab the pins will click themselves in 👍
The avant is sone machine. I'd love a go in a newer version. If I ever get to the point of needing an all round machine the avant is in the running.
@@LaidBackHomesteader we have a 750 Avant great machine. I'm assuming your not far from coagh give Chris a shout at essener he great fella
@eoinodonnell7885 I already was in his yard looking to hire a 625 then I ended up getting the avant for a lend so couldn'trefuse. I towed it with the car!
Following this since discovered few weeks ago great job. Tip for the roller dont roll anything bigger than 4" unless there is more dust than stone as you can burst a barrel. And also dont stop a roller on vibrate turn off few seconds before you change direction or stop. 👍
Thanks for the advice regarding the rollers. It was my first time driving one They just handed the key lol
@@LaidBackHomesteader I drive roller on tarmac nearly every day just a wee trick the barrels may look strong but are easily damaged
@eoinodonnell7885 I knew the way you give advice you know what your on about. Thanks again
Nothing like having a go fair play lad. Great video for people 🙏
Thanks for the feedback Im glad you enjoyed watching the video. It was a long process documenting it at this end but if it helps someone that's why I did it.
No great insight every day is a school day. Looked like a bit of work but I'm sure it feels great to have gone true the process. Fair play lad you are doing great work, great to see your kids involved 👍
@@theoodonovan1118 We dont have to call them twice when theres chicken for dinner lol
That's the job, keep up the good work lad.
Great job showing us how chucky chick's can be reared. (Hi & lows). My only suggestion for the chicken tractor would be to cover the middle part with wire. I've have saw what 1 fox can do in the middle of the day. That chicken plucker is some job. Remember plucking many a bird back in the day. Are you doing turkey's for Christmas?
Brilliant video Pete very well done 👍
Thanks William. It took a while to edit. It was a really good experience watching how the birds react to changes. They really love being out on the grass. Are you enjoying watching my shorter videos more often or do you like the longer videos less often?
Great video, Pete. For people wanting to raise meat birds, you showed them the whole process. It must have taken a long time to edit this video. RIP Nugget.😢
It did. I had to keep going back over the footage to see where I was in the video. at the start of the video i had the quality low by mistake only for someone commenting on another video the had watched and notified me otherwise the video would have been very low quality. Glad you enjoyed it
Hate pikees
👌👍
Tyshawn Grove
You may have already done it but you can try a rooting hormone when planting them as well as adding additional earth worms to the soil. it’s all trial and error though unless you get the soil tested (god knows how much that would cost)
A lot I'm sure. That compost was just to use as a base layer to get something in the ground. When I start adding my own compost on top the earth worms will come. I've planted a green manure there to help with nutrients cycling. You'll see that in an upcoming video lol
Sounds like a great shed plan, Pete. Looking forward to seeing it happen.
Building is slow. 😏 Plenty of content 😁👌👍
Hi Pete, all looks good.
Thanks 👍Ill be better planned out next season
Hope that back gets better, Pete💪👍
Look up Johnson-su composting technique you can make a compost extract from it and use it as a spray on the leaves all year round. Savage stuff!
Is that compost tea? Ill have a look here shortly. I was planning on spraying microorganisms (good bacteria) over the field but never got round to it. Dr Elaine Ingham. Check her out. Beware, its deep rabbit hole this soil science
@@LaidBackHomesteader it is indeed!! But yes something similar, I’ve had great results with it. The Johnson one I was talking about the use cubes to break the compost down you don’t have to break your back turning it lol!
@@ciaranthompson11 sounds like a good idea. Im going to make biochar at some point after i do a bit of hedging this winter. Plenty of work to be done. Ive a retort boiler sitting ready and the slab was poured for it a month ago.
@@LaidBackHomesteader best of luck love the videos, I’m from Monaghan originally now living in the states. Keep up the good work!
What a difference compost can make!
Yeah that compost was still steaming when i put it down. The turnips where planted the same day. Weeds didnt even grow!!
😁👍👍
Dad's plants are really cool😁👍👍
