Morning Helicopter Flight
There will (for me) always be something great about flights that start out in the middle of the night, and transition to morning. The air is calm, crisp, clean. Relaxing.
Smoke from the Pacific Northwest fires fill the valley up, and the smell of "campfire" fills up the cockpit. The Mission Mountains are beautiful. Enjoy

Secure for Landing!
มุมมอง 2.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Helicopters are truly amazing machines. We never get a runway, and most times we don't have a road to land to. So, I found myself lucky to have a road cut into a mountain side to land in this video. Thank you to all the first responders and volunteers out in the thick of it everyday! "That Others May Live"
Sperry Chalet, Glacier National Park, Montana.
มุมมอง 1.2Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Built in 1913 by the Great Northern Railway. Under the direction of James J. Hill, the Sperry Chalet opened fully in 1914. Prepare for a strenuous hike to get to this beautiful Chalet. In 2017 the main dormitory was consumed by wildfire. The National Park Service immediately preserved what was left of the historical structure, and in 2020 the Sperry Chalet returned to full service!
The Helicopter Recovery Triangle (Single Engine you are screwed)
มุมมอง 364หลายเดือนก่อน
It's all about giving yourself options. Airspeed, Altitude, Power Available. Once you understand that flying a helicopter in hostile terrain is all about managing these 3 assets, you can keep yourself from running out of Lift and Ideas at the same time. On this approach I recon, and choose a path that allows an approach along the Long Axis, best I can. Then we start to pull from Airspeed, Power...

Lets take a break from helicopter aerodynamics. Edward Abbey was a writer, a "environmental essayist". My opinion is everyone should be required to read his books. To truly understand we are place holders in time, stewards to our lands. I grow sad knowing that some people in my country will never know a life outside choked air, and high rise buildings. Most of all, the beauty of floating a rive...
Transverse Flow Effect (can you feel it?)
มุมมอง 2.4K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Simply put is the changing of airflow from a vertical flow to a horizontal flow as you begin forward flight. As you start to accelerate your helicopter, at airspeeds from 10-20kts or 12-15kts (totally depends on what your instructor believes. However the bottom line is you will feel the vibration and right roll, so when you do, just look at your airspeed. If it's reliable.) airflow, upflap/down...
Vortex Ring State, is it real?
มุมมอง 6763 หลายเดือนก่อน
So? What is it? It is an aerodynamic phenomenon in which a helicopter essentially descends into its own downwash. The airflow becomes reveresed in the inner portions of the rotor disk. So what are the conditions required to get into Vortex Ring State? 1. Airspeed less than ETL (google ETL). 2. Vertical descent greater or equal to 300fpm. 3. 20%-100% power applied with insufficient power to stop...
Compressibility effects in Helicopter flight
มุมมอง 4493 หลายเดือนก่อน
Compressibility, not just a Fixed Wing problem. Both airplanes and helicopters need an airfoil to get the Bernoulli to work. So! both are effected by subsonic and supersonic airspeeds over the airfoil. The conditions that will increase the severity of Compressibility in helicopter flight are; High Airspeed High Rotor RPM High Gross Weight High DA High G maneuvers Low Temp Turbulent Air Some thi...

Dissymmetry Of Lift (or magic)
มุมมอง 3674 หลายเดือนก่อน
Helicopters truly are amazing machines! So lets talk about the unequal lift between the advancing and retreating halves of the rotor disk. (This will be tailored to a counterclockwise rotor system. Just flip it around for you European folks ;) ) The difference in lift would cause the helicopter to be uncontrollable in any situation other than hovering in calm wind. The upward and downward flapp...
What is VNE (Never Exceed Speed)?
มุมมอง 3285 หลายเดือนก่อน
Is this speed (indicated) important to helicopters? Of course it is. Retreating Blade Stall is a major factor in limiting a Helicopters top forward speed (VNE). Short Aerodynamics class: As airspeed increases the downward retreating blade flapping becomes larger to increase the Angle of Attack required to equalize lift throughout the rotor disk (a function to compensate for Dissymmetry of Lift,...
VFR is harder than IFR
มุมมอง 5385 หลายเดือนก่อน
Departure weather was VFR. The destination hospital has a camera showing same (VFR) conditions. The enroute weather was not suitable for continued flight. Make the decision to turn around, and do it. Its not a democracy. Offer a plan to the team. You can overhear me ask if they want to get a ambulance rolling to link up with them where we were to continue on. They opted to head back to base. I ...

Short video to highlight the awesome working relationship between the A.L.E.R.T. medical team, and the world class Two Bear team. Just found the channel! Retired HEMS Paramedic from CA now living in Indiana. Love the videos and definitely love to see one of the Med Crew riding shotgun as an extra set of eye. The company I flew for encouraged us to ride upfront with the pilot as often as possible and being the avaition geek I am, I had no problem with that what so ever. I am hearing more and more from other crews that their company doesnt allow this or discourages the Med Crew from riding upfront with the pilot which is absurd to me. The more set of eyes looking outside the better and if you dont have a patient it makes for a good safety culture.
