Closer to Landscape
France
Video diaries of a slow-life in a self-built cabin in the French countryside. Maintenance of the cabin and land, using local materials and connecting to the landscape while observing and contemplating cultural and natural heritage.
Located on the western slope of an old citadelle designed by the 17th century architect Vauban, in the midle of the Maginot Line. And WW I en II battlefields are close.

Decorating the cabin with pine branches and lights. Amazed by the beauty of the misletoe and its iconic presence in the landscape, especially in winter. Cutting firewood and protecting my plum eau de vie from frost. Installing 2 solar panels on the roof. Visiting the Christmas village of Avioth and its basilica.

Some quotes from the video:
'In her book The Living Mountain, Nan Shepherd compares walking to learning. Getting to know the landscape, the citadel and its surroundings, its slopes, the circular walk and the fields leading up to it, but also my own garden surrounding the cabin, is also a slow learning process for me. Shephard writes: "Slowly I have found my way in".
And in his ode chapter to Shephard's book, Robert MacFarlane describes her experience on The Living Mountain as 'avidly sensual.'

'Last week I returned The Walking Man, a graphic novel by Japanese author Jiro Taniguchi. I borrowed it from Carol Nieder, who compared me to his fictional main character. The Walking Man is a book in which nothing happens but everything occurs. It follows a Japanese architect as he wanders randomly through urban Japan - often silent, usually alone - with his vivid dreams that make time stand still.
The spiritual connection that the Japanese have with nature is also strongly felt in urban life. .’.

'This is Viscum album, commonly known as European mistletoe. It's a semi-parasite on several species of trees, such as poplar and apple, from which it draws water and nutrients. We connect it with Christmas through the Romans, who associated mistletoe with peace, love and understanding and hung it over doorways to protect the household.
Struck by its sheer abundance here in France, I began to notice the beauty of the patterns these plants create in otherwise leafless trees.’.

🎉
It was a magnificent work. A wonderful video. Thank you for your effort and heart. Celebrations. Also, I liked the location of the village very much. I liked it. Greetings.🎉
Liefs Corine
Thank you for this Xmas gift. Serene 2025!
Ruins really fascinate me. To see what they used to represent and how they present themselves today, when nature has taken over again. Happy Christmas to you!
Mooie rustige beelden 🌲🌲🌲
Fijne feestdagen en een voorspoedig 2025!
Here in the US, the state of Vermont has a similar landscape. The pine swag above the mantel is a nice way of connecting back to the land.
Thanks for the compliment Jim! Hope you have a wonderful Christmas en new year...
Prachtig! Uw huis, uw video’s; een fijne ‘hide away’… Fijne kerst!
Wonderfully done
Thanks for the compliment; please share with other people and keep watching...
Wow, Wonderful
thanks!!!
Ik zie vooral landbouw. Is het wel natuur? 😉
Blijf vooral kijken, grt,
greetings!
not at all, i cant believe you're serious ---- indigenous people in their own place LOVED their natural environment, the Celts for one, they even worshipped it. come on bro! Beautiful filming, and sound editing my man!
Hi, Thanks for your reply! I was just referring to our western European cultural way of relating to nature, and how it was depicted by artists (painters, in literature etc). Even in the Centerburry tales there is hardly any reference to the surrounding flora and fauna. For Celts nature was a great unknown, and quit often fear results in religion, including (human) scrifices... Not the weekend forestbathing that lot's of people now see as the ultimate relationshop with mother... And sure, there alsways was some kind of relationship
Mooi gedaan hoor!
Dit keer weer prachtig!! Elke aflevering is mooier en beter:))

Slow life... la vita lenta bellissimo film 👏👏👏
❤It's so beautiful
It's so beautiful this video makes you feel alive ❤
Lijkt me héérlijk Menno!
Awesome landscape and outstanding videography and great editing with sound..... totally great creation 👌😍. And agriculture art is clasic ! !
Top!
Amazing !!! So breathtaking...and also can say it is a beautiful short art film ❤
Precioso episodio.
Very interesting! I liked this e pisode so much.
Heerlijk. Misschien moet de titel zijn 'it made me think of you'.
Fantastische video. Alle aspecten die aan bod komen boeien. De appeltaart is geweldig lijkt me. Het goede leven in noord Frankrijk. Bravo!
lovely
❤
First video finished, very peaceful I loved it, now starting the second one, can't wait to see what's next and how all this will evolve ! =)
Looking at the endless rows of crosses is quite depressing. Good to have the scenes from minute 6 to 7 - such a great play of lights against the rainy window.
it's also the serenety and design in the most enchanting places in the countryside. It is depressing and at the same time uplifting... thanks for sharing your thoughts, best Menno
