Hello, I'm an Acadian fiddler based near Seattle, WA. I love Québécois, Acadian, Irish, Old-Time, and Danish fiddling and my Tune of the Week series was set up to showcase some of my favorite tunes. I love to teach fiddle tunes as well, so most of my videos have a slowed-down version of the tune for folks who want to learn how to play it.
Taking a Break!! - Devon’s Tune of the Day
I have to take a week off on the Tune of the Day Challenge! Not by choice but I’m heading to Lark Camp until August 4 and I don’t think I’ll have cell or WiFi reception. I’ll tape videos while I’m there to catch up once I get back, so stay tuned and I’ll see y’all soon!

French-Canadian Fiddle Lesson - Reel à Georges from Édouard Richard
มุมมอง 111วันที่ผ่านมา
Here's a fiddle lesson for my Patreon friends, this is how to play the great tune "Reel à Georges" from Gaspé fiddler Édouard Richard. I break it down into pieces and play it slow for folks to learn. Then I show some of the bowing principles behind it and some key ornaments. This tune is also helpful for learning a principle that makes French-Canadian music so rhythmic: don't be afraid to play ...
Heel Toe Polka from the Channel Islands - Devon's Tune of the Day 072
มุมมอง 100วันที่ผ่านมา
Here's a tune also from Lihou. I wrote about how they're revitalizing the music of the Channel Islands for Songlines Magazine, and I had fun learning some of their tunes. They said the tunes of the Channel Islands are much more British than French, which I think is the case with this tune here, a Heel Toe Polka originally from the accordionist Leonard Belloeil from Guernsey. It's a real lovely ...
Man bouonhomme est bein malade - Devon's Tune of the Day 071
มุมมอง 130วันที่ผ่านมา
This tune, "Man bouonhomme est bein malade" (My little man is quite sick) is actually a song from the band Lihou. I just wrote a big article on them for Songlines Magazine about how they are revitalizing the music of the English Channel Islands. The songs there are a great blend of Old Norman French and English, with ties to French Canada. This song, for example, starts off almost exactly the s...
#TunebookTuesday: Reel à Georges - Devon's Tune of the Day 070
มุมมอง 60วันที่ผ่านมา
I'm cheating a bit for #TunebookTuesday, using our own tunebook! My dad put together "La Boîte à Pitons" (The Button Box) tunebook and packed it full of our favorite French-Canadian tunes. We're bringing copies down to Lark Camp and will be leading jams with these tunes. The one I picked out today is one of my absolute favorites, a real special one from the great Gaspé fiddler Édouard Richard!
#MandolinMonday: Cuffey - Devon's Tune of the Day 069
มุมมอง 147วันที่ผ่านมา
Here's a fun old-time mandolin tune for #MandolinMonday. I got "Cuffey" from a live recording of the Highwoods Stringband and it's a blast on the mandolin especially. The tune may have roots in Black string band music, since the name "Cuffey" or "Cuffy" is a derivative of the Ghanian name "Kofi", and it was frequently used as a name of enslaved people during slavery. Hopefully it doesn't have a...
#SqueezeboxSunday: Bobby Casey's Hornpipe - Devon's Tune of the Day 068
มุมมอง 17514 วันที่ผ่านมา
For #SqueezeboxSunday, I got my dad to bring over his lovely old concertina to play one of our most favorite Irish tunes, "Bobby Casey's Hornpipe." We've been playing this one of years, and it's the first tune my dad played on the concertina. I remember him learning it in front of a little peat fire in a thatched roof cottage hahah, so it's very authentic! This hornpipe is also called "The Humo...
Up Against the Buachaláns - Devon's Tune of the Day 067
มุมมอง 9314 วันที่ผ่านมา
I've been doing a ton of Acadian and French tunes recently and really missing playing Irish tunes. So here's a classic one! I've heard this tune a million times with a bunch of different names, but hadn't actually learned it until now. "Up Against the Buachaláns" is a classic reel, also called "Miss Lyon's Fancy" and "In Knocknagree". There's tons of versions, but Eliot Grasso & Dave Cory's one...
The Coal Branch Reel - Devon's Tune of the Day 066
มุมมอง 12114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Another Gerry Robichaud tune and this one is one of the most fun! Gerry learned this tune from a fiddler from Coal Branch, New Brunswick, Helen Arsenault. She'd married into his family and then later moved to Waltham, MA where Gerry's family lived. I learned this from Lisa Ornstein, who's taught a lot of folks this tune. I don't know if Helen Arsenault was ever recorded, but now I really wish t...
Silvestrig - Devon's Tune of the Day 065
มุมมอง 12814 วันที่ผ่านมา
I'm heading to Kenmore tonight for the Kenmore Summer Concert Series which I book and run every year! But before that, I'm joined by my wife Dejah for a really gorgeous Breton slow air known as "Silvestrig". It's a famous Breton song, a lament, by a father for his son Sylvestre who goes to war. The father believes he will not return and in some version of the song he does, and in some he doesn'...
Maxime Leblanc's Reel - Devon's Tune of the Day 064
มุมมอง 11514 วันที่ผ่านมา
Today's tune is another one from the great New Brunswick Acadian fiddler Gerry Robichaud! It's called "Maxime Leblanc's Reel" and I forgot that it's not on the Slippery Stick album, but on his "Maritime Dance Party" LP which I just got a copy of! Maxime LeBlanc was Gerry's landlord when he lived in Minto, New Brunswick, which was a coal mining town that had a lot of good dances. I think Gerry t...
#TunebookTuesday: Veuze Tune - Devon's Tune of the Day 063
มุมมอง 7514 วันที่ผ่านมา
Here's another lovely Breton tune from David Surette's tunebook. Available online and he's got some real nice Breton tunes in this one. The tune I picked has its roots in veuze music, the "veuze" being a bagpipe from SE Brittany and Northern Vendée and I think it's also a Poitevin shawm maybe? Anyways, cool tune! Here's more info on David Surette's tunebook: www.melbay.com/Products/22192EB/trad...
#MandolinMonday: Emile Arsenault's - Devon's Tune of the Day 062
มุมมอง 19914 วันที่ผ่านมา
Wait I thought this was #MandolinMonday, why is there a fiddle?? Haha, I had some fun working with video editing and split screens here so we could have a special guest on the video today. Today's tune is a really twisty, twirly Acadian tune from New Brunswick fiddler Gerry Robichaud called "Emile Arsenault's". Robichaud learned this tune from Oscar Melanson who bed-ridden at the time so he cou...
#SqueezeboxSunday: Hédard Bulger's Tune (Fiddler from Duoro) - Devon's Tune of the Day 061
มุมมอง 14021 วันที่ผ่านมา
We were very sad to hear of the passing of New Brunswick Acadian fiddler Hédard Bulger in late June! Here's a lovely little march (?) that we learned from Hédard about ten years ago when were visiting the Acadian Peninsula. He owned a fish shop, "Marché de Poisson Bulger", in Le Goulet, NB, and was nice enough to try to remember some of his favorite fiddle tunes for us. He didn't have names for...
Hanter Dro - Devon's Tune of the Day 060
มุมมอง 10021 วันที่ผ่านมา
I got to meet English fiddler James Dumbleton recently when I was working on an article on the music of his band, Lihou, for Songlines Magazine. I learned this Breton "hanter dro" from James' TH-cam and he learned it in turn from the band Bellevue Rendezvous. Not sure where they got it from but oh wow is it a gorgeous tune from Brittany! I can't seem to figure out how hanter dro's work, and why...

I love this one and you two really do it justice! Never knew this was from a Massachusetts fiddler!
@@reddyandre stay tuned, I have a hot one coming from a Boston Franco-American fiddler!
Fantastic tune and playing🤩👏👏👏
Bon séjour !
I love this one! Great playing!
Great playing! Fun tune reminds me of country dances at Westmark Hall in northern Alberta. Sure enjoy your posts.
Thanks so much!!
Enjoy your week!
That's a very helpful lesson. Thanks for sharing it.
This isn't Apples in Winter. It's The Lost and Found.
You're right, I just think of it as Apples in Winter because that's the name of the Dervish medley. It's stuck in my brain that way!
@@devonleger7469 I totally understand how things of this nature lodge in our brains! Great playing, always love your Acadian tunes, too!
Excellent playing!
At 2 minutes in, the Apples in Winter I sort of know: th-cam.com/video/INX0-rG3v-w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MYwGRmi1hHPxcMH-
Excellent playing of a marvelous tune!
A fine tune and very nicely played!
A neat tune with an interesting history, and very nicely played!
A very fine tune and beautifully played by both!
Splendide.
A fine tune with an interesting title, and beautifully played by both!
Tellement important de bien s'entendre avec soi-même !😂😅😅
A neat reel and a very fine job of playing it!
That's certainly a lovely tune, and it's beautifully played by both!
Both of you are wonderful 😉 👏 👏 👏
Love this! Asked my fiddle teacher (Denis Lanctot) if he could write me the tabs for this so I can learn it! Thank you for bringing this great tune to light Devon!
Way ahead of you, my dad's tunebook "La Boite à Pitons" has this tune transcribed as sheet music (not tabs though): www.lafamilleleger.com/la-bote-pitons
Wow! J’aime. Bravo
A fine job with a fine reel!
Devon, I love your playing and how you teach as well. I’ve been following you for awhile now. This particular tune called Fiddler from Douro, was composed by Ivan Hicks. The notation is in his Fiddle Tunes and Souvenirs Originals - Volume 2.
Oh wow you're totally right! Great find and thanks so much for pointing that out!! What a fun tune.
Very nicely played! And I can imagine bagpipes playing along.
A fine tune and a great job of bringing both instruments together in such a clever way!
A fine tune played in Hédard Bulger's memory! Thanks for sharing it.
👍
That's a really fine job with a marvelous tune!
Sort of reminds me of St Patrick’s An Dro. I learned that tune one year at the finale of Alistair Fraser‘s Scottish string fling at a Ashokan. th-cam.com/video/k2otPVm6Pwg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9HGa-bPQXVhJYWQm
Excellent playing by both!
C’est chantant.❤belle pièce
An excellent job with an excellent tune!
What brought you to that beautiful location? :-P
Hahah thanks Makaela we were playing tunes in the WA State Parks and big thanks to the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission for inviting us out to do that!
There are a few of Kahana's tunes and a brief bio at folkways.si.edu/voyager/nwffrmp3.htm
An excellent tune and a great job of playing it by both!
I wonder if Gerry played it like that. You seem to start with the B part :) Maybe with time, fiddlers realized that it was better to start with the other part. Cheers !
Yeah Gerry played it with the high part as the A part! I like your version too!
@@devonleger7469 I was sure Gerry played it like that because you're very faithful to the version you hear. Around here we play the low part first. There was a little song going on with that reel and the air was on the low part. Maybe that's why we play it like we do. Also, because we didn't know it's name, and because of the song, we were calling it: La reel du d'jäbe (diable).
@@bonenfant96 what’s the song that goes with it??
I love that you played mandolin. I don' know of any mandolins playing this music.
@@TheHarpfiddle I’m sure there must be French mandolin players playing French folk music, but I can’t think of too many! The tune for tomorrow comes from American mandolinist David Surette and it’s a Breton tune!
An excellent pair of polkas and very nicely played!
Devon, Your dad is a treasure! This past week I got an opportunity to play a few tunes with him at Mule Barn. I can mark that off my bucket list. Thanks. William
@@wms8221 oh awesome! Yeah I love playing music with my dad! He said he had a ton of fun at the Mule Barn!
That is really cool! I learned a variation of this tune from Brad Leftwitch who learned it from Tom Fuller (1974) from Oklahoma/Texas area - very far away from San Juan islands!
@@pattibossert718 oh cool! I love Brad’s playing!
An excellent tune with an excellent background, and beautifully played by both!
Being of Norwegian decent I thought this might click with me....nope....does not compute. 😁Well played though.
It's played in Cape-Breton a lot.
J’en veux d’autres pièces d’Émile Benoît, c’est super bon, ça rock!❤ j’adore. Bravo
Excellent playing by all!
A fine reel and a fine job of playing it!
Sounds great.
Love the keyboard rhythm with the fiddle! Great tune!!!
