Adding a logic level shifter to get rid of flickering LEDs connected to a NodeMCU
This is the fourth video in our WLED series where we get RGB independently addressable LEDs working even at a longer distance using a logic level shifter to boost the signal.
If you understand logic level shifting, please post in the comments to fill in the gaps where I don't know what I'm doing!

How to connect addressable RGB LEDs to power and an ESP8266
มุมมอง 5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the third video in our WLED series where we get RGB independently addressable LEDs connected to a power supply and connected to the ESP8266 that we set up in our previous video. Let me know what you think about the new shorter video in the comments below. I value your time, but I'm willing to make longer videos or even more in-depth videos for you to choose from. How to connect WLED on a NodeMCU to your WiFi and setting a static IP
มุมมอง 21K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This video continues our WLED series with getting it connected to WiFi and setting a static IP address so you can easily reconnect to it repeatedly in the future. In my example, I'm using Google WiFi and a PC, but the steps are repeatable on macOS and any other WiFi Router that allows you to see its settings. My favorite network scanner on a Mac is called LAN Scan: www.iwaxx.com/lanscan/ The PC...
A quick guide on flashing WLED to a NodeMCU ESP8266 board
มุมมอง 17K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm learning how to control LEDs with a NodeMCU, and the first step is flashing WLED by AirCookie to an ESP8266 NodeMCU. This video goes over downloading the appropriate software and WLED firmware, as well as how to determine which COM port your NodeMCU is running on. I learned after rendering that the video artifacts weren't from my editor, but were from my camera, sorry about that... ¯\_(ツ)_/...
Setting up a NodeMCU/ESP8266 to control Independently Addressable LEDs
มุมมอง 26K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my first video in a series on learning more about controlling independently addressable LEDs wirelessly using an open source project called WLED. It is long and covers a lot of errors I made and how I resolved them, but I hope this will be helpful for people just starting out, like me. If you would find it helpful, I can re-cut this to only show what works for future reference without h...
Shelly RGBW2 Effect Demos and thoughts
มุมมอง 10K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a shorter video (partially because of my camera going out, I'll figure this out someday!) mainly demoing the different effects of the Shelly RGBW2, and talking about my thoughts on the usefulness of this wireless LED Strip relay. Patreon: www.patreon.com/chasingsquirrels
5: DIY RGB LED Strip Video Game Timer
มุมมอง 8213 ปีที่แล้ว
I made a timer using an RGB LED Strip, Shelly RGBW2 relay, Node Red, Home Assistant, and an Amazon Echo Plus. This video is a bit longer because I was recording around midnight and I apparently get easily confused. If you have an Amazon Echo, don't worry, I censored all of the instances of "Alexa" so it won't trigger your device. If you don't make it to the end, but still have questions, leave ...
Cheap DIY lighting Grid for Garage YouTube Videos
มุมมอง 3533 ปีที่แล้ว
My lighting setup previously included a ladder and a broken tripod with a piece of wood bolted to it, which took up a ton of floor space and was time consuming to set up. In an effort to remove as many barries to making videos as possible (sorry for the delay!) I decided to build a single pole "lighting grid" out of cheap wooden furring strips I had lying around and a few other scrap pieces of ...
4: Beginner's Shelly RGBW2 + MQTT + Node Red Overview
มุมมอง 11K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I spent the last few weeks learning about MQTT and Node Red and learned how to set up Shelly RGBW2 controllers from scratch more reliably. This video covers the following major steps: 1. Setting up a Shelly RGBW2 from scratch. 2. Installing the Mosquitto MQTT Broker in Home Assistant 3. Connecting the Shelly RGBW2 to the MQTT Broker 4. Testing the Shelly MQTT Broker with MQTT Explorer 5. Instal...
Home Automation Squirrel 3: Setting up the Shelly RGBW2 Part 1
มุมมอง 7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This week I spend a lot of time making mistakes. Don’t worry, most of the video is sped up 50x. This episode covers me getting the Shelly RGBW2 connected to my WiFi and to an RGB LED strip. The next part of this will show more of the interface, features, and I’ll mount these in my garage so I can change the color of the pegboard in the background. A short video of unboxing and describing the purpose of each of the Shelly relays I purchased. Shelly 2.5: amzn.to/2IkwYLs Shelly 1 UL: amzn.to/34Kpt89 Shelly RGBW 2 is not available on Amazon at this time. All Shelly products are available for less on their website, but with s...
Home Automation Squirrel 1: Installing Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi
มุมมอง 4683 ปีที่แล้ว
Re-upload of a previous video after I noticed some issues that needed to be replaced. The squirrel I'm currently chasing is home automation - specifically Home Assistant running on a Raspberry Pi 4. I've ordered some Shelly relays and in a future video we'll be setting them up and connecting them to Home Assistant. I've never done any of this before, so I'm probably wrong about most things cove...
Home Automation Squirrel - Ep. 1 (re-cut)
มุมมอง 493 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a re-edit of the same first video. Please let me know whether or not this version is more enjoyable to watch. I figure my channel is new enough I can do dumb things like this and delete the other video later, pretending it was never there, and giving up the 10 views. =P I’m chasing a lot of squirrels right now, and the first one that I’m chasing is re-uploading the same video about home...
Home Automation Squirrel - ep. 1
มุมมอง 743 ปีที่แล้ว
I’m chasing a lot of squirrels right now, and the first one that I’m chasing is home automation using Home Assistant and Shelly home automation products. In this video I’m just giving an overview of what to expect for the rest of the series, and to simply test out my “studio“ to see if the rest of the videos will be a pain to watch. Let me know what you think in the comments below about what I ...

Thank you for this detailed video. I download the Flash tools with your help and just wait my stuffs bought from Amazon and Aliexpress today. Very cool that you show the issues : The one with the (1) in the Wled.bin file name and the USB charging wire one. We all learn from your tests and save time. 😉

Quick question. You are powering both MCU and ledstrip from the same PSU. I have this flickering problem too but i use separate PSUs to the MCU and led strip.(tried using the same but blew my first RPI zero 2w..) How would i go about wiring it up like you did but with separate PSUs?

For soldering, it helps a lot to add a little flux paste so it melts over where you soldier (this also protects the board/items nearby w/ a layer of liquid) You want to heat the metal tho, so the soldier attracts to the heated metal. So you heat the pin and pad of the component, then you apply the soldier to the hot pin n it will melt around the pin perfectly. Hopefully this is helpful (I see it's been a yr since uploaded)

Thanks for all that close up detail! I've had the level shifters in a bag for an age, tried to power some sk9822/apa102 without the shifter, loads of problems. Thought I'd give it a go.. Followed the basics on the level shifter - which on other videos was terrible about the wiring, and from yours, I have a fully working 78 strip on top of my Bambu Lab 3d printer. Thanks! from UK :) Liked and Subbed!!

Any idea why I don't get any color blends? I get solid red green blue only. No blending between colors and no white. If I set the color to white the led strips shuts off. I'm using ws8215 60 leds / meter strips

    • @jeffvanhorn8933
      @jeffvanhorn8933 ปีที่แล้ว

It turns out it was a power issue. Powering 5 meters of 8215 from my USB apparently does not give enough juice to run white. Once I added a power supply everything looks great.

Thanks for sharing! I had heard that for the WS2811 strips a logic level shifter was needed but decided to try my 55ft string without it and sure enough when displaying white there was a noticeable flicker. Fortunately I had ordered a set of these and when I installed it on the 3.3v output of my ESP32 the flicker went away. I've heard these are less than ideal for upconverting the signal, however, it seems like there aren't a lot of other solutions that will work with a digital signal.
