This is such a weird little song, and I was a bit unsure how to translate it, but turns out it actually works out really well (IMHO) as just a good chugging chord strummer. Em, Asus2 in the verse, F and Em in the chorus. Stick a capo on to brighten it up and you've got a winner.

In times gone by, I've described this song as one of the triumvirate (along with Make It All Okay and I Wanted To Be Wrong) that forms the low point of the R.E.M. catalogue. But maybe Stipe was on to something.

I mean, whisper it quietly, but this might have just taken the top spot as my favourite R.E.M. cover. That guitar and bass really put the FUN into FUNKY, so it felt only right to break out the (virtual) drumkit. As with so many of these songs, CGTFH doesn't generally figure in my list of go-to R.E.M. tracks, but I'm rethinking that as we speak.

Track 5 from Fables, one of the band's more abstruse songs - this is a simplified version, played live (some small fixups and a shaker notwithstanding). Does Stipe really sing "John, Bill and Ted" in that chorus? Having forensically investigated numerous versions of the song I say no, but I also don't have any better suggestions :( so let's go with it. What do words even mean anyway?

An absolute classic of a song! Nothing fancy here, couple of guitars and a bass, but what a bass - Mike Mills is doing way more here than I ever gave him credit for. Why this one, and why now? Who knows! That's just the way I roll I guess. One of those songs, from Accelerate, that really has passed me by, it's discordant nature has never really grabbed me. But here we are, digging into it, and by golly my guitar and bass had a bit of a shock having their 17th frets tickled - not easy with no cutaway! Luna the dog, as always, was distinctly unimpressed.

This IS a weird song, but I love what you did with it. Your cover feels less abrasive than the original. Yours sounds more melodic, if you know what I mean. “Low point of their catalogue” is a bit harsh. It’s not their most inspired, but it’s arguably the best thing on Around The Sun (imo). I can’t decide whether I like the time sig changes in the verse or just find them slightly annoying. Good version.
Thanks! I think the sequencing doesn't do it any favours sandwiched between two pretty bland tracks. Not to mention it's all relative - it's a reasonably high low point for 15 albums worth of music! Personally I like the time signature, although I gave up trying to set up a proper click track :D
