Welcome to our first video! In this episode we document the beginning of our renovation - floors in the kitchen/living room; heating and putting the kitchen back together. Stay tuned for more next week :)
Great video. Heading that way in 2025. Will hit you up for contractor recommendations. Subscribed 🎉
Really enjoying your videos, making us feel very 'homesick'.
Glad you enjoyed it! ☺️ those warm autumn days have been a bliss, it even tricked my rose into blooming again 😅

Thank you! 😊
You guys are practically the only ones on TH-cam I’d bet on to make in a Bulgarian 'cello' setting! That Bulgarian wife of yours-with her killer smile-is going to open doors for you left and right, ones that most people couldn’t even find! I’m pumped for the videos. As a fellow Westerner who’s also married to a Bulgarian, is C2 fluent and owns and has completed four property renovations here (3 Sofia, 1 village), I can just say one thing for now: bravo! My only question is that the house looks pretty damn complete already to me. But, what a great canvas to work on with that large bathroom, you should put a sauna in it :-)
@@MyChannelMyStories thank you! Your comment made me realise I probably haven’t split the videos so well. In the garden video I show the barn which is the main renovation project and we plan to convert it into a 2 bed house. Currently we are settling into the main house and saving for that. The sauna also might have made its way into our conversation.. ;) would love to hear your renovation experience here in Bulgaria.
@@bulgariancountryhome Back in the U.S., I fully renovated DYI 2 separate upper-middle-class California homes from top to bottom, where the final flip values made it worthwhile. But here in Bulgaria, my wife uses the famous 'BG gaslighting' to keep me out of the DYI activities! As you might guess, this is pretty frustrating for me. But hey, we’re managing-mostly by hiring craftsmen, which makes it 10x's harder ten than just doing it yourself even if you’re fluent in Bulgarian. Now, here’s where things get really interesting: In the U.S., watching over the workers’ every move would be a bit over-the-top, but here, it's basically a requirement. So, I’ve reluctantly embraced this cultural norm of supervising like a hawk-questioning, suggesting, and hovering to ensure they don’t “forget” to finish or skimp on quality. Ta-da! I’m a supervisor again! In Sofia, we’ve renovated three apartments down to the concrete and tile, rebuilding them as luxurious dwellings. We have a village house, a charming place 12 km from the Black Sea, is the only one we didn’t strip to the brick, though we did tear out two bathrooms, half the kitchen, and re-furnished the interior. We also took on a massive backyard project-completely tearing out and redoing 800 square meters. That project definitely took a pretty penny. We even put in a 6m*6m shed that your husband would love! Not a man cave but close. Oh, and the icing on the cake? We accidentally hired a company who passed themselves off as non-Gypsy but, surprise! They were, and they managed to mess up almost every yard detail. Even though I camped out on-site to oversee, let’s just say “supervision” didn’t quite save us that time. So, yeah-if this doesn’t sound like a glowing endorsement for international renovations, you’d be right! But we are still married and love the village 6mos. a year 😄
Really lovely.
Thank you! 😊
The chicken coop is looking great. We have the same wooden floors, and we thought about sanding them, but we think we going to add some insulation and hardboard then laminate on top as the wood is not in great shape. Shame about the doorway.
Thank you guys :) Laminate would be a good way to add some extra isolation and would be a much quicker and cleaner job!
Welcome to Bulgaria!🙂
What a gorgeous baby 😊

I may have missed it but how much was it please ? 🤔🚍⚓️🇬🇧
beautiful house enjoy your new life
Make sure to use incandescent bulbs or full spectrum lighting inside the house . Not LED or modern bulbs. No good for your child's brain development or your guys health either
That is a really good point, thank you. I will definitely have a look into it :)
Brilliant video , love how you're naturally living and a great influence for your child !
@@AntonioGonzalezESP Thank you for the kind words Antonio!

@@DarleneTaylor-ph5zr Thank you, so kind 💛
Hi guys nice to meet you.
What a lovely home you guys have made, beautiful
Thank you :)
Those chickens are already being spoiled in their palace; I hope they will thrive for you. Good idea for the insulation. We will be there next week so will be nice to be able to enjoy some of our grapes. Wonder if the apples will be too. Kai is so sweet and helpful. Don't know if you know this but I just googled about marigolds, and apparently the flowers and leaves have a citrus taste and you can add them to salads and sandwiches, but they may be harmful in large amounts.
That is so interesting about the marigolds! Will give it a try. There is so much fruit this year, we still have both grapes and apples so you should be able to enjoy them :) have a safe journey
@@bulgariancountryhome Thank you :)
You are nothing less than indomitable, raising an old stone pile out of the ashes, gardening, and running a farm, all the while having a little one. You're an inspiration!
@@jczartoryski You are very kind, thank you.
What do you guys do for work there? Loving the video very beutiful house and family!

Lovely and peaceful very nice what you are achieving . The wall you have is very nice good feature. The garden how it is broken up is very nice . You have ur work cut this will take up all your time . Very satisfying for your family to have all this fruit and vegetables at hand
Thank you Michael :)
A fellow Guyanese! Lovely video and family.
@@Saffirebluu 🇬🇾💛 Thank you
Awesome stoneflors.. but your camera sucks
Thank you we are happy with the floors! We don't have a stand alone camera so we have to use our phones so the quality isn't the best 🥹
How much did you pay for the house?
A no brainer if you're from Bulgaria.
Congratulation,you've done a good job as a team.Well done.
Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it
lovely house.Lot of potential
Well done with the tiling it looks amazing. Did you consider using tile edges for skirtings?
How much land do you have?
@@NewBulgarians I am not sure about the exact acreage (Bulgarian deeds are not as detailed as in the UK haha!) but it’s a sizeable land. Essentially it’s two plots.
@@bulgariancountryhome our deeds details all 3 of our plot sizes. You seem to have a lot, like we have too, which is nice when you can make interesting sections in it.
Love springtime in Bulgaria, the birds and blossoms are lovely. We have some woodworm too which we treated with some spray , but we don't live there yet so don't know if it's been successful. Will be interested to see how you get on. The garden and stonework are lovely. You must work very hard on the garden as its so neat and tidy.
@@NewBulgarians it is lovely isn’t it! We also had a birds nest right next to the front door and you could hear them in the morning. Don’t get me started on the woodworm haha I tried to find a specialist to come and have a look and we are still waiting on a quote. We’ll be doing it ourselves in the upcoming weeks after all
@@bulgariancountryhome good luck for us both then, I hope it works out.
We have the same wooden floor boards upstairs, looking forward to seeing what you do to yours. We also have a wooden panelled ceiling in one of the rooms which you have upstairs, will you keep them? We also have a vlog of our journey, but our house needs complete renovation, yours is so lovely, and the garden is a gorgeous outdoor space from what you have shown. Looking forward to more of your journey. 🙂
@@NewBulgarians Thank you! Yes, we’ll keep the panelling on the ceiling. I quite like it actually when it’s painted it blends in more but still adds interest. We’ll definitely tune in on your journey as well ☺️
@@bulgariancountryhome we like the panelling too, shame it's only on one ceiling. Oh thank you 🙂
Lovely home, I don't suppose you know where the kitchen was bought from do you?
@@NewBulgarians It is IKEA :)
@@bulgariancountryhome thank you 😃
love your videos, do you have instagram? I am English and my partner is bulgarian ,we live in the uk and have a 2 year old, we talk about moving to bulgarian while our son is young but so apprehensive! love to see a young couple doing this and your house style is lovely 💓
@@shm1166 thank you, this makes us so happy! Instagram is @thebulgariancountryhouse :) Such a big move can be so daunting! We also discussed it for years before Kai was even born. It’s one of those things that you just have to go for it, and we are very happy we did. Wishing you all the best to you and your family 💛
We have purchased an old home in a village near Rakovski. We have the same issue with our new wood stove. Where did you find your adapter? That is exactly what we need.
@@TE-jr6lc Yes, several places told us that we have to put the stove in the middle of the room. Then we found a shop in Varna and the guy was super helpful. His contact is here www.kaminivictoria.com/en/contact/Conact I measured and discussed everything via email and he just shipped the parts to us. You can sent me a DM if you need more information :)
Wow, you guys did an amazing job! I love the cosy and earthy vibe, and the paintings all around the house are just perfect! ❤️ I'm thrilled that I found your channel because my husband and I have also made the decision to move to Bulgaria from the UK with our little daughter for similar reasons. We're so excited and can't wait to start this new adventure! Keep up the good work and cannot wait to see more updates from you! Our Zoë Caia says hi to Kai 😊❤ Blessings, Adi, Tiyon and Zozo

Lovely house and garden, Looking forward to watching your journey!
What a lovely house!
That's unrenovated? I've been looking at unrenovated houses in Bulgaria for about a year now and they dont look like that!
Cause they are not like that. The house they are showing has been objectively recently renovated, they mean it wasn't done by them. The only ''old - old'' thing inside are the floors. Most of the unrenovated (99%) should be a 100 years old untouched houses. :)
@@deyankrustev5721 yes I've seen so many of them and with my budget, that's what I'm likely to end up with. 😂
@@elainemcguinness3962 Well.. renovating can be a tough task for sure, but it's very rewarding once it's completed. I wish you to get the house of your desires and turn it into the house of your dreams. :)
Very nice house . I feel the wood floor is nicer than laminated . Laminate is slippery. Love the garden wish ur family luck with this 😊 you won't regret it .
Thank you Michael! Yes I agree, I think we’ll start sanding it and do our best to fill the bigger holes. Any tips are welcome :)
I don't think the holes are problematic however could u try floor filler it is normal for these problems. We are in the centre by the sea etc I done villages yes it's beautiful but I just like things nearby.
@@michaelbbb2271 great, I will have a look at floor fillers, thank you :) seaside is beautiful and yes, coming from the capital it’s definitely an adjustment haha
