Here's a tip for my fellow older athletes, exercise your feet! Seniors sit too much throughout the day, even if they do exercise. Keep the muscles in your feet strong and developed!

“If you wondered why you are still benching 135 then it’s because you didn’t put weight on the bar “ More SS dogma. Clearly someone who wonders why they haven’t been able to lift more than 135 has attempted to lift more than 135 in order to know that they can’t lift more than 135. SS is a good option for anyone starting their strength journey, but it is hopeless for anyone who has been training for a long time. Even SS coaches know that the simplicity of 4 basic movements and adding 5lbs eventually ends and that it requires ever more complex planning to add weight to the bar - often more experienced lifters do not want that complexity, they are sufficiently strong for their lives and aren’t aiming at excellence, just good enough does them. 135 on the bench is a decent lift, not amazing, but better than not lifting at all - which is the majority of the population.

Personally I prefer dumbbells barbells work your muscles in "fixed grooves" and dumbbells are better for working inbalances.

I used to only work out with dumbbells, then about 5 years ago, moved to Starting Strength and barbells. From my experience, you can never get really strong without barbells, - you just can't go heavy enough. My strenght went up considerably and quickly when I switched.

I'm almost 72 and am currently fitter and stronger than I've ever been in my entire life thanks to the fact that I started resistance training about four years ago after being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Good video for us older people. I'm 65 and starting over. I noticed you didn't mention rows. Was there a reason? I'm wondering if i should do the regular 5x5 or maybe Madcow since I'm starting over from a year layoff, Thanks.

    • @TestifySC
      @TestifySC 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

Thanks very much, and I’m not sure if you saw this part, but I put a comment in the video (printed, not spoken) about the fact that this is simply how the program starts and that there are eventually changes such as another pull. We usually utilize pulldowns (or chins if someone can do them) as the first option on another pull (if someone isn’t doing power cleans, which is common with older lifters), but the row is a good option as well. I would strongly recommend the Starting Strength Linear Progression instead of madcow/5x5.

I always appreciate these videos, Phil. It’s good to have Periodic reminders of why we lift with barbells, and how to do it. I started in my early 50s, when I realized I would be retiring in just a few years, and also ran across the starting strength channel. I looked at it as training for retirement, and I expect to continue forever, which is the beauty of the system. Learned the lifts using Rip’s videos, and continue to be motivated and learn more technique from yours and a couple others- they’re gold, particularly for someone with no starting strength gym in the area.

I spent 9 years working at a fire station where we had 3 “retirement” communities and 7 assisted living centers. We would go on “lift assists” every day- usually for frail, underweight senior citizens as well as actual falls with transport to the hospitals to see if the patients have subdural bleeds from the blood thinners they were on. 2 things were common: 1-if this was the first time, they would be beside themselves as they realized their lives were about to change- they knew they got weak…they did not know how to reverse it. 2-they always said, “I just wasn’t STRONG enough.” Not once did any of the believe it was for lack of “cardio”. They saw the obvious- that strength is important. It was very common for them to remark about how strong I was, and when a larger person was on the ground I would assure the person, “Oh, you aren’t that big- I just picked up 435 today.” I say this for anyone coming here, not convinced- strength is important to your health, to your well being. And there are not that many competent practitioners of the science. Phil and other SSC are more than competent. They are the best. The best time to plant a tree is 50 years ago. The second best is today. Strength works the same way.

As someone who did coached SS workouts for a couple of years, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Friendly, safe environment with like minded people. Got super strong and kept with it in my home gym. I didn’t know this guy but all Starting Strength coaches are all trained the same and actually have to pass a very rigorous practical. If you think you’re too old to lift, think again. I witnessed many many men and women in their fifties, sixties, and seventies get strong and kick butt.

Great, quick video! But Chuck Taylors aren't squishy if you remove the insole. You only need squat shoes if you lack the ankle mobility to squat properly. And the lowbar squat doesnt demand much ankle mobility...

I don't know whether I should cry or laugh at this. You're making weightlifters use low bar for their squats? What. Sidenote: What's the best Sinclair score one of your weightlifters have hit? Male or female.

    High-bar squats for the win!

Addendum: I haven't seen it very often. Maybe twice in the last five years, but don't squat in socks. That's a Darwin award right there. Lifting shoes will help a bit with butt wink as well.

When you squat, hold your breath like you're going underwater, and you get to breathe again at the top. Somebody once told me, that.

Sorry, I switched to high bar and I'm never going back.

I alternate them. I can lift more with the low bar and I feel the squat more in my glutes and hamstrings. But I prefer the high bar due to the increased range of motion.

I just switched too and I can actually feel that my legs had to work. Specifically the quads of course. I low-barred for years and got no growth in my legs. Nothing was happening but I was getting a much stronger mid back and a thick abdomen. I don't mind that but I missed the days of leaving the gym on jelly legs like when I high-barred naturally in high school and college. I get the low bar and I think it's right but I wasn't getting leg growth and my progress was so slow because of that. It's weird to have squatted for years (low bar) and my legs didn't develop at all, thus my squat was plateau'd

High bar squat = Olympic squat. Low bar squat = good morning squat.

As Johnny Candito will attest, people who high bar squat are morally superior.
