@Modizzle11 I had a little bit of CS experience (intro CS class in freshman year of high school) but nothing besides that. Many of my classmates also had minimal to zero prior CS experience and ended up just fine :)

Hey @vito4456 sorry for the really late reply...needed to turn on notifications for comments! You would almost always TA for a class you have already taken and done well in, whether if be in your major or not. For example as a CS major I could TA for a math or physics class I had previously taken. Not all professors will need TAs -- some may just need grading help and many won't need any help. So to sum things up: yes, professors will want to see you performed well in the class but there isn't a strict requirement on what classes you can TA for. Don't hesitate to reach out to a professor whose class you enjoyed!

@@calpolyvideos off campus housing for international students. Like could you briefly tell how far you live from campus, the security deposit, sharing, lease terms etc. Only if you are comfortable with it though.

Hey there, thanks for the comment. As you mentioned since core CS curriculum is almost exclusively software based and you will be working on your own projects and labs in any decent school, the "learn by doing" focus of Cal Poly can sometimes feel less special, especially when you compare this to more of the hands-on majors here. That being said I can definitely say essentially all of my CS professors have been incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate. The general reasoning for this is these highly intelligent professors are willingly accepting a lower salary at a state school so they are truly interested in academia. Also, all my CS classes have been ~30 students or less which is amazing.

Yeah I think there's mixed opinions about this both on the faculty and student sides. The faculty seem to be preparing to adjust their syllabi for this change and while I imagine the education you get would still be good who know how things will turn out especially in the beginning. A potentially more concerning thing to consider is the administration's desire to have the school open in the summer for full capacity and even require some students to take classes in the summer and virtually during other quarters if I recall correctly -- don't remember the details though so you should look into this.

It is happening in 2026.

As you may know Cal Poly has a largely caucasian population and you'll definitely notice this right away. For me (as well as most of the peers I know) this was not an issue at all. There are also plenty of cultural clubs and events run by students as well as Cal Poly itself.

It has always been like that, it hasn't changed in years.
