Game Boy Screen Caparison w/ Analog Pocket, ModRetro and Original Hardware
Video comparing the main ways of playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color games today. Includes original hardware, modded original hardware, the Analogue Pocket and the Mod Retro Chromatic.
It's not perfect, but just wanted to have something out there focusing more on the screens for those looking at these options and trying to decide on what to get. Thanks for watching!

Gameboy Advance IPS v2 screen mod vs ITA TFT DSi screen mod
มุมมอง 12K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Wanted to make a comparison video showing both screen mod options for the OG Gameboy advance. Im a photographer not a videographer so pls forgive the amateur nature of the video lol. Top left is IPS, bottom right is the ITA mod which uses a screen from the DSi which has the same screen size and PPI as the standard display. Both of these were purchased from Handheld Legend.

    Can’t lie the Analogue Pocket looks the best and also happens to be the best value for the $$$

    You may want to turn the brightness down on the ModRetro (like to the lowest, hah) so that the colour balance doesn’t get so oversaturated on the camera! I feel like the colours don’t look quite so vivid in person and that’s probably from the sensor getting overloaded

    this is the best looking footage that i've ever seen for any of these, cheers. I knew the analogue pocket GBC preset wouldn't look very good because of it's size but wow it's not even close to the original

    thanks for video. I was away from GBA mod scene. NOW, I realized that there is 2 different LCD types. I prefer pixel grid so I would take ITA over IPS. I will get it on GBA SP so thanks for video!

      @@finaljenemba Okkaay Im a complete ignorant on this, sorry but I need to ask Ronny is saying IPS and TFT but you´re talking about the ITA screen wich one is the best in terms of color and brightness, I mean the one on the left (on your video) looks better to me, is that the ITA screen?

  • @robiocraft
    @robiocraft 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm, I don't know if it's just me but pixel dithering transitions for colours blend in more and look smoother on the ITA screen mod, might be because it has a pixel perfect pixel grid, the ips mod is so clear that you can notice things like colour transitions and other imperfections more, this can be pro or a con for some also depending on title.

      It’s not just you, that’s part of what I was showing in the video. It’s looks the same in person. Similar to playing a game on modern display vs a crt. If one likes the pixel art look of modern indie 2D games that’s what the IPS gives you, vs the original look of the ITA.

  • @TheFrayer5632

    When watching it in 4K, I must say that the IPS seems to be more vivid than the ITA looking a little more washed, like the AGS-101. At the end of the day, it’s preference of how it looks and how power efficient both screens are. IPS drains more compared to ITA but the ITA has more soldering work if you have a 40 pin.

    Hi great video! Do the ITA screen hum and hiss as loud as the IPA? Is it recommended to install a power cleaner? I love my IPS screen but that noise really freaks me out!

    Original resolution is so much better.. I wish there was a drop in screen like that, with no soldering..

    • @DeadGyro

      The IPS is a drop in unless you want controllable brightness

    • @joshs2235
      @joshs2235 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funnyplaying's ITA kit only requires soldering if you have a 40-pin GBA. If you have a 32-pin, no soldering is required (you just wouldn't have brightness controls). Even with the 40-pin, the only required soldering is to remove a very small capacitor (C54). It's actually super easy to do, way easier than soldering brightness cables. To find out if you have a 32-pin or a 40-pin GBA: "The small number under the cartridge slot is visible under the GBA's battery cover. If the number starts with a "1," you have a 32-pin screen connector. If you see a number that starts with an "0," you have a 40-pin screen connector."

      @@wertyorig3827 Love it. Surprisingly vivid, but with the pixel grid in tact (which I like a lot). Also no ghosting, motion blur, or any image retention problems that I've noticed. I know that the image retention thing can sometimes be an issue with IPS screen mods.

      @joshs2235 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wertyorig3827 No problem! It compares most with the AGS-101 screen if you've every seen that before, with slightly better colors. Just know that some soldering is required with this kit. If you have a 40-pin GBA, you have to at the very least remove a small capactior (C54) which is really easy to do. (32-pin GBA's don't need this). Otherwise, soldering the additional wires is only necessary if you want manual brightness control with Select + L or R. You can still adjust the brightness with the touch sensor even if you don't solder the wires, but I've always found those touch sensors to be very finicky.
