Line 6 Pod Express. Is it a legit giggable rig or just a home practice tool?
Hey all.
I recently got my hands on the Line6 Pod Express. It had not really been on my radar but a chance to pick one up on a trade deal here in Ireland came up so I had the opportunity to dive into it for a bit.
There is a lot of content about the unit on TH-cam so I wasn't massively interested in making a general overview but I did think it would make for a great travel / backup rig and wanted to demonstrate how it could be used as a full rig (amp and effects) in that capacity.
Ive been really pleasantly surprised at how well the functionality holds up. Even in "one preset per song" operation it copes really well with the addition of a two button external footswitch.
With relative ease I could scroll through the presets (songs) and use the footswitches to trigger Drive, Mod and delay effects at the required moments. And the software makes programming it very quick and easy and it's limited options really lead to using it creatively.
While not necessarily my first choice for a mainstay direct rig this makes for a great backup rig.

Mooer GL100 looper. Comprehensive looping with touchscreen control.
มุมมอง 1.7Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Hello all. This is my second video for Mooer. A whie back i reached out to them to ask them to send the Preamp X2 and when they did they very kindly included their new touchscreen enabled compact stompbox looper. Interestingly tis is my first ever demo of a looper in 3 years of making videos. I have always played in bands and so really have no use for loopers but Mooer asked me to make the demo...

Hello all. Back at the beginning of my channel I reviewed the Mosky Deluxe Preamp and Mosky Amp turbo. It's up there with the most viewed videos on my channel and i believe it's because Mosky make some really great pedals. Another video series that has high views is videos about the American sound from Joyo. Again just a really brilliant pedal. Obviously Mosky make clones and the American sound...

Hey All This is the fifth video in my series of golden oldies pedals. The pedals that aren't fresh to the market but are sleepers and have loads to offer. This is the T-Rex Dr. Swamp. The Dr. Swamp is a straight ahead 2 channel distortion peal that in my humble opinion has an 80s Marshall tone going on. Its articulate, rich and can cover off all the gain sounds you'd need with the two channels....

the pitch is more useful when tuned to an octave up or down
Level knob controls general output volume? Or the mix/dry rate of the effect? No reviewers ever says that...
Kind of a no brainer as a backup. I have a Harley Benton pedal power amp for emergencies. Adding one of these would be a complete "oh shit, everything's's dead" backup rig. Definitely gonna stick one in the cart next time I'm doing an order Great video Rob
Hey Philip. Thx for the comment. Yeah if you had the power amp with it you could plug into your cab and just kill the speaker sim on it. One other thought I e had since making this video is most of the time with Kampala if I have a delay on, it’s on for the whole song which means I could put mod on the other footswitch on the POD express and do away with the footswitch altogether making it even more compact. And it’s so easy to program. It’s a huge thing. I’m making a review of he two notes Opus right now and while it sounds absolutely stellar there are so many options that every time I put it down for the night and come back to it the next day I’m tweaking it. There really isn’t that capacity with this which I think can be a really good thing.
I don't see much talk about this pedal anymore but I still always reach for the Amp 11 first, especially for my single coils, and your review clearly demonstrates why it works so well. Sometimes I'll put my J. Rockett Blue Note pedal in front of it because they seem to pair very nicely. For some reason I still don't own a Timmy though.
I reach for it too. A lot. It delivers every time I use it. Stellar pedal.
boo hoo, get a different guitar then
Boo hoo indeed. Maximum boo and excessive hoo.
Great demo man, enjoyed your playing too! I watched a video on here somewhere where the main sound difference between classic vox and fenders were mainly from the speakers. Sounds great tho and clearly diff to the 65 OD to me
Hey. Thx for the comment. So I’d not even heard of the 65 OD!! That’s mad. Must try and get my hands on one. I think this is a great pedal to give your amp a vox flavor. Like, I was using a fender bassbreaker 18/30 at our band’s studio and while it’s a great amp it’s super clean at any sort of manageable volume. So I put this on front and it gave it a voxy edge of breakup tone. Worked really well and it’s so affordable. I since replaced the bassbreaker with an AC30 so I don’t need it anymore!
GREAT VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!!! will these work for the HX STOMP ??????????
Hey. Thx for the comment. I’m not sure about that. Download them and try I suppose. For example the HX stomp has less blocks than the HX effects (I think) and the HX effects has no amp modeling. So it may not work.
Excellent demonstration… thanks 4 the link👌🏾
You are most welcome!
Read this before purchasing a Pod Express : I had one for 2 weeks trying to get some decent tones out of it. Yes the clean sounds were OK but the moment you added gain in most cases it sounded, cold, fizzy, no 'body', raspy, ratterly, I could go on. The moment you added gain, it was basically either on or off. I did try hard to be fair with this pedal but overall I found it suitable only for a 15yo kid just starting out. Money back!
Thx for the comment. I honestly can’t say I agree with you. But I suppose hats heavily dependent on what type of music we are both playing. I actually found the tones pretty useable. It’s the Uber basic functionality that makes it not instantly a pro spec gigging unit straight away. But it’s surprisingly close.
I am actually on my way to pick one up for my birthday lol.
Happy Birthday. Enjoy!
I know the feeling perfectly. The best feel for a guitar I had was for an epiphone mg. Problem ? It neckdived even sitting to play. It was the most beautiful cherry red to me. But you can't play holding the neck up. Wide straps dont work always. It hurt to sel it, as it had a killer neck humbucker...
Hey thx for the comment. I really loved everything about the idea of this guitar and honestly it’s not a bad guitar at all. It just didn’t do what I wanted it to do and it was too far away from what I wanted to make me want to mod it. It happens sometimes I guess.
I ended up getting this in the entire Total Studio MAX bundle (ToneX MAX and a whole ton of synths came with it) on a sale in early 2024 for only 200 bucks. Incredible value, just incredible. If you do everything in the studio in the DAW, there’s really no need for any external effects gear if you have this. Uses about zero CPU with any patch on my Mac Studio M2 Max and no latency either.
Yeah I have to say I’ve been using it to reamp live recordings I’ve been doing with my band and it’s performed perfectly. Very impressive
Looks like a nice unit. I have the Boss Pocket-GT which is more of a practice tool, but with the added Bluetooth pedals I can do almost as much as I can with my Boss Katana-Air or other amp plus one of my pedals or multi-effects units. I really dug the song you played also!
Hey. Thx for the comment. I’ve come across the pocket GT before. Looks interesting. The Bluetooth pedals thing is very interesting too. I’m gonna check that out. The song is by my band Kampala. You can check us out at TH-cam.com/@kampalaband
Awesome review! 💯 wanna ask if ths pedal good to replicate ACDC tones?
Hey. Thx for the comment to be honest I’d say no. It’s too high gain.
@ thank u so much for the heads up! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
👍
If you’re looking for AC/DC tones I’d say look at the bogner blue pedal or the Mosley classic Mshall I just reviewed if you are in a budget.
@@TheGuitarEffect will sure to check it out!!!
Can you please enumerate your signal chain i really wanna know. Are connecting to a physical amp or Audio interface/mixer?
Hey. No problem. If you go to the audio section of the Demo for the first part I’m playing direct to my interface. I’m going through a delay and reverb after the Mosky but other than that direct to the interface. Then a little later in the demo I turn a speaker sim on on the two notes revolt after the Mosky and the delay and reverb. That speaker sim improves the sound to my ears but it’s a personal preference not a must. Does that answer your question?
Where do you connect this? Infront or in the return fx loop?
If you are using an amp you can either use this to make your amp sound like a Marshall by putting it in front of your amp’s preamp. Alternatively you can use it as your amps preamp by putting in the FX return. Either works. I don’t demo that in my demo I’m using it direct to my interface.
Thanks for doing this video. Was very helpful!
Thx for the comment. That’s what my sim is with my vids so I really like it when people find them helpful
Lovepedal still makes Amp 11 pedals. The new white box version is cool because you can turn on the boost side on the right by itself without turning on the overdrive side on the left. It's a really great sounding effect on its own based on the Lovepedal COT 50.
Hey thx for the comment. I’ve t is a little bit annoying that I can’t use the boost independently in this. But it is such a brilliant pedal.
The old white box version I have has a knob labeled TREB instead of TONE and that one can also operate the boost separately.
Just bought last week , but I'm finding when I have the plugin opened up I hear some light crackling but if I shrink it down it goes away . Does this in stand alone and reaper and gig performer. While my other two amp Sims, s gear and waves gta no problems. So my conclusion with amplitube is this , great sounds but to get them there is always a work around wich has always been the case with ik multimedia. This is my second go around with their stuff. Bought studiomax 5 years ago and just did again last week . Is it worth 150 sure is even with the issues it comes with . I really wish they could come out with a product that just works without the issues
Hey. Thx for the comment. The only time I had wierd noise with this was when I inadvertently hd the input set to the MacBooks onboard mic. Other than that it’s been very good.
Hi mate 👋 I am looking for my first tube all-round amplifier, I am bedroom users, also I have a lot pedals, wampler booster, mini tube screamer, boos SD-1, Russian big muff, EHX US deluxe fuzz, Boos Turbo Distortion , Nano Metal Muff, Delay, Chorus, Tremolo, Reverb, etc. Because you have it both Amps (Lionheart & Studiotone) Wich one is better for bedroom users & better pedal platform? I want a good clean channel & can get the high-gain tones frome my pedals. Which one would you recommend for my case? Thank you 🙏
Hey. Thx for the comment. So this is an interesting question. For me there is no competition the studiotone is Miles ahead. But there is a lot of personal taste involved in that. I significantly prefer the sound of the studiotone. I think the feature sets are comparable. If you ever wanted to go gigging you could easily do so with yeh studiotone’s 20 watts whereas it would be difficult to keep up with a drummer with the Laney’s 5 watts. However if you never intend to go gigging I’d check out a tube preamp. Like one of the Friedman ones or the Kock plexi one or the two notes revolt. They’re all great.
could you please make the video about how to load backing tracks on the pedal? cause if it had this function too i’d love to buy it also for that !
Yeah I can. Incidentally it’s really easy to do. You just need to upload them in the editor software. One track per memory location
@theguitareffect how long can be the backing track per slot?
At least 5 mins.
I bought this pedal for that reason and from what I can find, there is no software available for uploading and downloading. I’ve msg’d them (in multiple places) without a reply. If anyone has a download location, I would appreciate it.
@@mojojeff hey. So there definitely is software. It may not be out yet though. Let me look into that and I’ll get back to you.

Thx!
Dude!!! You really made that thing sound Huge!
Hey. Thx for the comment! Appreciate that. It’s a great amp.
This is a great overview / manual for the pedal! I just got one for some simple looping like I did with my DL4 in the early 2000s, but I’m saving this video for diving into the different modes.
Hey. Thx for the comment. Really glad you found the video useful. It’s a good looper.
all aib pedals should have reverb, come on tc
Hey. Thx for the comment. So interestingly, the deluxe reverb version of this has reverb but this doesn’t. I presume that is one reason for this not having reverb. Also, if I was using this it would be on a pedalboard and I’d want to put delay before reverb so it wouldn’t make sense for it to have recerb for me.
I watched your Boss RC5 video. I liked the way you used it for backing tracks, and can see why you've upgraded to this unit. Horses for courses. A very well done video and explanation. I plan to use the RC5 to enhance my open mic performance. If I was to get back into being in a band again, I would be buying one. Thanks.
Hey Joe. Thx for the comment and the kind words. I think the main reason the RC5 in particular works as opposed to other loopers is the midi and the ability to name presets. It’s very good from that perspective. But this is just an entirely different thing. It’s excellent
Just what I'm looking for. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome! Thx for the comment.
If the loop has been stopped, you can rotate the right menu selector to select the storage position too.
Hey. Thx for the comment. Yeah I was aware of that actually but never pointed it out. Cheers.
Is the pedal plastic?
Yeah I think so. But I’ve no qualms about it breaking.
sold! gonna be my first pedal... found it for about 50$ mint. ur jam def inspired me. i plan to use it with my synth and guitar since i cant afford an rc 5 right now.
Nice! Enjoy. Also with this you get a looper and delay. With the RC5 you just get a looper. So win win!
Can the Mooer DI power headphones? I have various preamp pedals (ie Vox Mystic Edge) and a Sonicake IR pedal ; I want to be able to plug headphones straight into the end of my pedalboard, would be good also to have an auxiliary input and independent level controls so I can plug my computer's headphone out into it and play along to backing tracks, so whatever the best solution is I'm not sure.
Hey. Thx for the comment. No it can’t. Definitely not. MXR make a headphone amp in pedal form. I’d say check that out.
Just got mine for $100!
Happy days! I’ve been using this a lot lately. It’s very good.
I now use the Cerberus before the Nux Amp Academy..my makeshift Trident LOL! Works great, got analog drives and Dist from Cerberus and modulation pre AA dirt. Works like the bees knees with the XLR out to FOH
I actually put that exact pedalboard together for a bit. Works well alright. Especially as both units have FX loops.

Bro. Just use the right amp and dont rely on Line6s AWFUL overdrives and distortions. ICK.
Sorry mate. I don’t agree at all. We should all use the right amp obviously but the ODs, Dostortions and fuzzes on the HX make huge sense in a. Gigging context.
Ummm no. You mean the Fractal VP4. The HX effects suck hard in comparison.
Ummm no. I don’t. I don’t tour with a major artist or for that matter am a major artist. The fractal stuff however good it may be is way beyond the money I should be spending on gigging gear given my income from music. Also 4 footswitches is not going to be enough for me.
Omg! I love that song by Crhis Cornell!
Thx for the kind words!
Can you save loops (background tracks) on this device? And does the looper sync with the drum function?
Hey. Thx for the comment. Unfortunately as I generally play in a band I don’t really use a looper at all so I wouldn’t use or explore the looper functionality.
10:06 Cerberus doesn't have a looper, but Trident does have a looper!!!❤❤❤
Hey. Thx for the comment. Absolutely correct. I do t really use loopers so I never focus on them.

Thx for that particular comment. That reaction is exactly why I made this video. It really in kind of surprising right?
I've had the Joyo series. I still have the American but still got the mosky fder because it's smaller and you can fit an additional mini pedal instead of the Joyo which is slightly larger. I sold the British but maybe will get the mosky version now too. I still have the oxford but can't see that mosky have a version of that yet. It looks like they are going to do a version of the dsm simplifier though. Bright flame. Excited for that too.
Hey. Thx for the comment. I have the American sound too. It’s just a brilliant pedal. I’m so impressed with these. They are just so useful. I’ll definitely check out their simplifier clone.
Definitely can see your point about the presets if this is the only Source pedal you have, however if you end up with a few of them, I can't recommend the Neuro Hub enough - you can store the state of all of your connected Source pedals using a single midi command. I had a stereo setup in my last band, and was able to get extra extra tweaky with what I sent to each amp in the app, then store that and the state of my EQ, compressor, etc as a preset with one midi command. Super, super cool. Expensive for sure to get into the "ecosystem," and doesn't overcome the lack of a display on the pedal. But for the form factor it's unbelievable what's under the hood. I have been able, with time and the app, to duplicate just about every overdrive I have, including a heavily customized one off overdrive that was built to my tastes. Thankfully it also sounds great even if you never dig into the app.
Hey thx so much for the comment. I really appreciate it when people take the time to write long messages. So the interesting thing is while the pedal sounds outrageously good and is as you said infinitely tweakable the lack of a screen kinda just makes it redundant for me. Even though I might only use 3 or 4 presets it just doesn’t work if I can’t see which one I’m on.
@ totally fair. With a switcher it doesn’t inconvenience me much but I have a new band and rig, which will once again require me to do some editing. That’s really the downside; it IS immensely powerful but with the one series you gotta do some stuff under the hood to get what you need, and it’s a lot less convenient in that sense than say, an HX or analog pedal. It was a lifesaver in my stereo amp rig though
Why when demoing in a gretsch people feel the need to put tons ov reverb and various excessive delays on it? They have loads of character dry.
Hey. Hx for the comment. Well I can’t speak for anyone else but in my case I’m using the guitar the way I want to use it. Like I think its character suits the use case I’m using it for which happens to be a slow atmospheric song. That’s all really.
The HX effects hardware is absolutely brilliant. I used mine for nearly 2 years live as a midi controller for my Axe FX, mainly due to the scribble strips. It also acted as back up for the axe fx because I could put an amp sim pedal in the fx loop and use the onboard effects.(not as good as the fractal but more than good enough). Only reason I stopped is I now own a Fractal FM9. I still take it to every gig however as it still remains my back up with a Boss IR2.
Hey. Thx for the comment. It really is a stellar piece of kit. I love it. Do you mind me asking which type of effects do you feel are better in the fractal and how?
I much prefer nearly all the effects on the Fractal with maybe the exception being pitch shifting, but given Digitech’s involvement with Yamaha and Line 6 that probably isn’t surprising. The reverbs/delays are genuinely studio standard akin to Eventide or Lexicon rack units and even modern VSTs like Valhalla, I am a reverb snob though. Helix effects are fine in a live setting, though I have found things like the phasers flangers and chorus’s don’t cut as well in a mix compared to the fractal. I think the ability to modulate individual parameters on the fractal algorithms using standalone LFOs, ADSRs and envelope followers sets the Fractal apart too; For example to create a decent autowah In HX effects I had to use the Empress Zoia’s envelope follower over MIDI to create something similar to the Fractal. In terms of Drives I think HX Effects and Fractal are pretty close, though the Fractal is more tweakable. I do think HX Effects has some unusual effects like feedbacker and tessolator which you can’t replicate in the Fractal world easily. I do wish that Yamaha would allow Line 6 to add a Symphonic chorus model though. Nice to see an Irish TH-camr though it’s been a long time since I have visited my family there.
Thx for the response. I must admit I simply find the price of the fractal stuff simply doesn’t apply to the level of gigs I play. Like I just can’t justify the expense given the level my band is at. I love the HX effects and I have 3 other boards for various purposes but I’d say the HX effects and the ES8 I have are the only effects I’ve ever spent more than €200 on. I get the recerb snob thing. It’s very popular at the minute. To the extent where there is a pretty big movement of ambient guitar music as a result of the emergence of big verb. Not my thing. But I get the appeal. I’m not really an effect snob of any kind. I am an insufferable music snob though!!
@@TheGuitarEffect I do understand want you mean about justifying the cost relative to the gigs you do. We only do covers in pubs and clubs from 1980s which are heavily processed and I am passionate about making the experience for the audience (and me) the best it can be so I really wanted to play live in stereo or wet dry wet. The great thing is that now there are great pieces of gear like HX effects at every price point. The way I justified the Fractal was thinking that it replaced my whole signal chain including the amp. When I totted up the value of my existing pedalboard plus the amplifier it was nearly £3,500 so £1400 for a secondhand FM9 was frankly a bargain. The same goes for a Helix of course. My previous Axe FX was a version 2 and only cost £750.
Yeah I can completely see how that makes sense when you replace everything. I play originals mostly I was playing in a wedding band too for about 15 years but I put and end to it recently. Just couldn’t do it anymore. I have a 00’s tribute band that does music from 2000 -2010 that’s just getting off the ground now. That’s gonna be my earner. Great great fun. I do t think I’ll go ampless. I’m just not into the experience on stage. I feel you get much better sound but lose all the power and drama. I get the practical positives of it though. I take it you are in the UK then. Thx for the Irish TH-camr comment I appreciate it. Happy Christmas
Do you love the fava bean color, Claris?
Ten four rubber ducky. Oh ya.
It felt like it was bridging the gap between 70s rock and 80s modded Marshall tones. Definitely a very usable pedal indeed 👍
Hey thx mate. If I’m honest I’m not a connoisseur of specific 70s and 80s tones. I’m a Grunge head through and through! But it did sound less sludgy than the mudhoney.
