We used a tap and tapped a thread directly into the riveted front derailer cage tail hole. Then simply chamfered the threaded hole and put a flush head phillips screw of a couple milimeters length. Or a longer one and then cut it off with a hacksaw. I always thought it was supposed to be done that way. But that was more than a quater century ago, so I guess these old school methods are not practiced any more. Great video. I really respect this guy's work to get it done and share. The rivet is a good idea, too.

anything that works is fine for me.

Its unbelievable to me that they do not make all of these with a screw instead of rivet since everyone has to take them on and off the chain at least twice in their lifetime!

You're right. Not made for fence posts. Made for decks or pergolas that have lateral load taken care of by design.

In the future, use a manual one for this task: you'll waste less water. This is a preventative tool, not like what you have there. If it weren't algae, them I'd say leave it and put it in filter mode.

I did over 2000 sq ft with weed barrier fabric. The landscape supply, when they were told what I was going to do with it, never mentioned that it was not UV resistant. After a cost of $350, and not even one season, it is degrading and faling apart like yours did. Now looking for a different idea

If you buy the wintershock, and add about 5 gallons of chlorine before you close the pool you'll find way less algea

Get a thin black opaque polypropylene plastic cover from your hardware store (about $40-$50), and drape it over the pool during the off season. No sunlight = no algae. Simple! If you cut it just right to fit the pool then it wont blow away in the wind. I like to make it about 2-4 cm larger so the ends climb up on the pool walls to prevent leaves going into the pool down the sides.
