Cool stuff!
Excited for this one!
Not even ONE mention of Larry Levan and The Paradise Garage??? Big failure!!! An iconic and pivotal moment of LGBTQ+ inclusion and history and immediate "descendant" of disco... disappointing!
There are many artists that were part of the movement that I couldn't fit into the script.
Why tho like the rainbow was good intill the lbgqt community came and now when you look at the rainbow all you think is gay
I always loved disco and was a little young to go out dancing in the 70s. But I made up for it in the 80s and 90s. I’m glad ppl. that like house music now understand the connection with disco. I’m seeing a big disco come back with the younger generation now and not the commercial disco and more the underground disco.
Me too! Yeah, I am glad that people are learning the history and bringing it back. Thanks for commenting! ♥️

Accusing Classic Hollywood - or, more accurately, the moralists who applied pressure to Classic Hollywood - of "queer-coding" seems inconsistent to me. Remember, such people didn't simply want gay and queer people to "know their place"; they wanted gays and queers to never have existed in the first place. How can you possibly expect to deny the existence of queerness when you're constantly insinuating it? You can't simultaneously be homophobic on the one hand and completely ignorant of homosexuality on the other. Arguing that the Wicked Queen from SNOW WHITE is a coded lesbian, for example, is a bit of a stretch. It's far more likely that the character was modeled on Hollywood actresses who just happened to be queer in real life, such as Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. It was the subtext that colored the portrayal, not the animators' design. And scapegoating Disney diverts attention from the real problem. Of course children are influenced by the entertainment media they consume; that's why they should not be allowed to consume so much of it in the first place! Disney cartoons were never intended as a substitute for real-world parenting, so parents who bring up homophobic children really only have themselves to blame.
Queer coding in the early days of Hollywood was nuanced. During the time of the Hays Code, it was some of the only representation the community had. It's hard to look back with 2024 eyes and hold it to the same standards of today. As far as Disney, I think that they have a responsibility to balance the types of representation. It's fine to have Scar (or any other villain) be queer coded, but there needs to be positive representation too.
@@closetedhistory So do you consider Disney until very recently to be homophobic, homophilic, neutral? What?
Look a the damage tv shows and movies did for blacks and latinos in the 70s and 80s and gangs and criminals. And even the news is bias in how it presents people compared to whites. Whites have an opioid epidemic blacks have a crack epidemic. If a white and black dose a same crime . The black person has a more severe sentence.
Well the opposite end is casual homophobia in movies where is presented as ok. A good example of that is Blacula where his first victims are to gay antique her to find his casket. When the cops discuss it.... they talk as if it’s not much of a loss since it happened to gay guys. The beginning of warlock it’s hard to say whether they’re being homophobic or edgy with his first victim ... again a gay antique collector. Probably fuck collectively as canon fodder among all the other victims
Having Hate and wanting to Destroy a music genre,.....Merica
Yup
Never could understand the whole “disco sucks” thing
Exactly! There was more to it than just not liking the music
Some of it was actually good even the haters liked a couple at least😂😂
Exactly! They just pretend they don't haha
I vaguely remember this. Long live Disco!
Ya can’t kill it!
Book burning.
Rap replaced Disco as the urban sound
I could see that. There was a huge development of house music that came after disco that I'd love to do an episode on one day
Disco lost the battle but won the war
That's a good way to put it
Thank GOD! That you said latine… everyone that says “latinx” needs to be shipped to live in Latin America for a while.
Literally a reactionary response to LGBTQ+ but also white people and black people enjoying the same music.
That part. Disco really did bring everyone together 🥲
I love these short, educational vids. Phenomenal work ✨

Not just want to know the truth, but feel lied to or betrayed when you see a movie that sparks your interest in a topic only for you to dig a little deeper and not like what you find.
Exactly! That too! That being said, they did Turing dirty in this movie
@@closetedhistory Watching this video reminded me of the clip from Hidden Figures where Kevin Costner tears down the colored bathroom sign at NASA. Every time you want to believe that there were people who when given the opportunity would rise about the ignorance you find it is just a Hollywood trick and nope. The "Decent" people just wanted to keep the status quo and not rock any boats. That's the best we could do.
Right, so true. We talk about that a little bit further in the episode too. That one would like to think the cop would do the right thing, but highly unlikely. I think this actually reveals a pattern of 2010 movies that missed the mark on social issues and making films about them.

How the fuck does this era fill with full out discrimination have more acceptance at a surten degree than modern day people?!
Maybe because people in general used to have more class, decency and honour to validate and honour people because they still knew that their own freedom depended on that validation as an instrument of power. When you go further back into history you will learn that even enemies used to honour each other, killing someone was far less of an offence or a spiritual murder than judging someone. This is really important to keep in mind. If you talked to older people from those generations you may hear many of them saying how todays generation has no respect for life around them, how they are so entitled to everything, to condemn, mock or judge others, etc. We have to understand that people have been incresingly objectifying each other since then as a result of the social conditioning arising from capitalist realist attitudes that sees the body like a land, something to own, commodify or weaponize, less and less holistic perspective is being developed within that psyche. This is also true about spiritual communities since there's a tendency to transcend the subjectivity and becoming fundamentalists. Gender is a bio-political construct used to serve capitalist objectives, so the more self centred society becomes the more binary views people hold (good vs evil/man vs woman). This is why trans people used to serve as Berdache within the indigenous cultures to help their communities to keep them out of that predatory impulse and instead connect at a higher more unified level, this is why trans people represent the bridge to freedom on earth out of this predatory paradigm, especially to women, this is why they have been targetted largely by tyrannical regimes in this world, people have been conditioned through ignorance and fears to believe that women are being erased, when in reality what is being erased is a tool through which women have been oppressed, and that is the binary view of life, including its gendering system. The answer to your question is not and should not be simple, because it is an inter-connected web of social structure that feeds itself and therefore the collective psyche.
Spectacular
