AM Radio Band Scan - 1976

Scanning and surfing the AM radio band in Milwaukee in autumn of 1976. My only recording equipment at the time was a department-store cassette recorder and a basic radio playing its output to stereo headphones placed next to the cassette recorder's built-in microphone. Authentically vintage charm! I tried to capture each station's call letters when possible. Not always possible.

ATIS - General Mitchell Field Information Lima Late Night Loop - October 1976, Milwaukee. A very early recording of mine when I first became fascinated by ATIS airport broadcasts. Interesting bit of trivia: The cassette tape itself was purchased in 1973 when I was 14. What you are hearing is from that original 49-year old tape. Beautiful Music: WEZW 103.7 FM Milwaukee, November 25, 1976, 3:32 PM. The sound quality is lower because I was only 17 years old and recorded it simply by placing stereo headphones around the cassette recorder's built-in microphone. It's actually a testimony to the longevity of cassette tape as a recording medium, because what you are hearing is the original 45 year old cassette tape.

I did that equipment operator thing just north of Santa Barbara, at a country western station. Babysat a Cetec Sheaffer 903 running a triple stack cart puller, and four Revox A33 reel to reel machines. Between making sure the commercial/psa/station ident carts were all in place and making sure the reels of music/announcers were full and not going to run out. We pulled copy, cut commercials, pulled news off the api wire to condense for the “real talent” to read live or record as necessary. Did the grunt work and had a blast… oh, and the automation beast was called affectionately F.R.E.D. For F***ing Ridiculous Electronic Device, and was programmed using a terminal that had Nixie tubes in it.

It was true about Schwinn bikes back then when the bike racks in elementary schools were stuffed with bikes. Every suburban kid had one and rode it to school every day. In our neighborhood everyone got the AMF or Huffy for Christmas. When the lucky kid that got a Schwinn let you try it the difference was obvious. Those bikes rode like Lincoln Continentals instead of the golf cart feel of those wonderful AMFs and Huffys. That was a loooooong time ago.

By the way, here's a listing of the artists and music titles that you recorded from KBIG-FM. SRP had the best quality recording and they also required those stations to keep their radio transmissions to the utmost performance. "Embraceable You" - David Rose (KBIG Aircheck/Delta Airlines/Time & Weather) "Lover" - Manuel "Hopelessly Devoted to You" - Ferrante & Teicher "The Twelfth of Never" - Mike Sammes Singers "Weekend in New England" - Frank Chacksfield (KBIG Aircheck/Western Airlines) "Honey" - Paul Mauriat "If I Only Had Time" - Johnny Mann Singers "Help Me Make It in the Night" - Percy Faith Orchestra I also formatted our streaming music station KOZEY Radio to play hundreds of these beautiful music selections with tender loving care. Many of the phonograph albums are out-of-print. 54:00 Day They Drove Old Dixie Down, Anita Kerr Strings (Susquehanna) project. These were rejected by Shulkie but used extensively by TM Communications and B’ville and were exclusive for radio and like most of the custom libraries they were destroyed or so we think. We’ve never found her masters. We have most of her catalog of custom tracks but harvested from non-masters sources. We do have her original license agreements which is an interesting piece of Beautiful Music history. Some have remained those of us committed to its survival maintain archives, we have since the 1990s. Other KRUZ air-checks here represent TM Communications (Tom Merriman) which were IBMA (international Beautiful Music Association) investors like Kalamusic and WGAY radio, however at 1:00 Just The Way You Are is by Norm Geller an FM100 exclusive later used by Bonneville Broadcast Consultants which may suggest KRUZ at this date was rolling B’Ville. Stations frequently cycled syndication during these years with minimum contract length commitments, however some research in this area with Shulkie and SRP will yield some rather contentious legal battles cutting loose from contracts early. Wonderful air-checks and my thanks for preserving these.
