Torqeedo 1103 DIY Hand Controlled Steering - Hobie Pro Angler 14 (2018)
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This setup can be built for between $50-$80 depending on existing H-rail hardware and if you have a Harken (or similar) pulley on hand. Steer lines purchased by the foot from innovative sportsman. 1103 standard installation required separately (up/down pull line). Will also need a small supply of stainless carabiners for quick releasing from the motor. I also routed the steer lines away from th...

Bush league editing, videography, and commentary. Marginally passable fishing technique...broken-off fish in clip 1 entirely my fault due to wanton disregard of frayed line. Frog fishing on a hot day at Kingman Lake in June. 2018 Hobie Pro Angler 14, Kansas
Very kooooooool!!!
Seems to be working great! I am going to do something similar with wood and see how it goes!
Yup, I’ve been quite pleased. Since designing this a guy has come up with a more sophisticated version of you’re interested in paying $140. Look up Tim Percy. My other vid on the channel shows the final design
This is the first I see this design and I'm not following how it is set up. I can't wrap my head around how that looping of rope turns the motor both left and right. Do you have a drawing or something? thanks . Nevermind - I saw your other video and I got what you did. Thanks.
Awesome. Just so you know, it’s still working great and I still have all the original components from that other video setup. I had it out yesterday for 5 hours without any issues. Only thing that has failed is the cheap Torqeedo steering triangle that is a very common failure point in these motors. I highly recommend the aluminum version sold by innovative sportsman.
@@ryanfrost7027 awesome. BTW, what's the diameter of the disc?
Stop Mumbling I can't understand you. Thank Goodness for Pictures!
Hi Chris! Wonderful to hear from you, how’s life on your end? Enjoy your weekend! ❤
Ryan, thanks for the design. It works awesome on my PA 17T with a Torqeedo Ultralight 1103AC. I did not want to drill any holes in my kayak and this is perfect.
Just wanted to say thanks Ryan for sharing great design. I built and installed on my PA 14 with a Newport Vessels 180 and it works perfect. I had the foot pedal controls and I prefer this option. Thanks again.
Amazon link for the line…. Looks to be about 2-3mm cordage.
Does the pulley wheel have a “V” groove or U (rounded) grove, and did you use and rubber coating to make it tacky?
Hey Ryan, What is your pulley wheel made out of, and what are the measurements (diameter and thickness)? Thanks
Thanks for the detailed view. One final question. Did you try running individual lines to your steering drum? I am trying to understand the value of the front Harken pulley and a continuous line vs individual lines to the drum.
NP! I'll admit I never tried that exact solution. It may work, but I'm a bit skeptical. The first version of this (not show on either video, though described a bit in the first one) was the same handle but a plastic bar at the aft end that the two steering lines connected to (6 inches apart or so). It's hard to describe the problem if you don't mess around with the steering line geometry a bit, but I found I got undesirable slack when turning that way. Again, connecting to a drum may solve it. I may actually give it a shot in the garage to see. But I gave up the first version and tried using an interrupted loop system and found it worked waaay better.
@@ryanfrost7027 That is gonna be my first prototype. I always want as simple as possible and can add a pulley or ? if it does not work. Thanks for your responses and input.
Greetings from Scotland! I have exactly the same question. All the hand steering kits I have seen online have a knob on a pulley, and two lines coming out the back that lead to the trolling motor. None of them have the pulley system. So, bereft of having an engineering degree I guess I'm trying to get my head around that too! P.S. I in the process of fitting an NK-180S to a Point 65 Tequila Solo kayak. Ryan, if you are reading this, thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us. And David, thank you for asking the question!
@@tartanrambo I think it would probably work alright without the additional pulley. That said, the pulley keeps it so that the control lines are tight to the side of the boat, which they won't be if you run the control lines one on either side of the black drum. I also will note I didn't experiment with the diameter of the drum. All of those little things matter a bit when it comes to controlling all of that torque and getting a steering system that doesn't wander too much with your hand away from it. I'm confident you or Dave could probably develop a system that's a little better! But I actually just came back from a 10-mile trip 2 days ago where I was using it all the time, and it's great. If you want to be able to use your motor whenever you want and leave it in the water all day while STILL being able to steer your boat when using the mirage drive, hand-controlled steering is the only way to do this.
Love your design but the video leaves me with questions. I want to do this for my wife's Outback and 1103. Are you running both steering lines on one side of boat, one direct and one through the Harken pulley?
Hi David, I’m running both on the same side. They each terminate on either side of the white handle around a small screw. FYI, I’ve since rebuilt this using black marine grade HDPE (starboard) and it’s a really nice solution. Still fiddling a bit with tensions and such but I really like it. BTW I’m amazed you put this behemoth on an outback, is the stern staying out of the water with all that weight?
@@ryanfrost7027 I used 3/4" starboard to raise up the motor bracket. That along with some weight distribution to the front and it is fine. Any additional pics of your setup would ne nice. Why did you make a wooden pulley?
@@davidwolf7351 that was sort of the beta version 2.0 as I was trying different concepts out. Version 3.0 which is almost entirely unchanged except for materials which I have stuck with now works really well....will try to get some more pics for you
@@ryanfrost7027 Thanks for the help
Is this Kingman lake In Kansas?
oh yes.
@@ryanfrost7027 sick! I been wanting to go here and catch some pike
Keep trying and you will get a northern pike outta there
