Skeletal Muscle Demo
มุมมอง 45K14 ปีที่แล้ว
Demonstration of some of the biochemical mechanisms involved in skeletal muscle contraction. Calcium ions bind to troponin causing a change in shape of tropomyosin. This exposes myosin binding protein on actin. If a nearby myosin head is already cocked, binding to the myosin binding molecule triggers contraction of the myosin head, pulling the actin molecule. ATP binding to the contracted myosi...

Helicopter swashplate function
มุมมอง 161K14 ปีที่แล้ว
Animation demonstrating swashplate function in most helicopters. No narration (yet). For the uninitiated, the swashplate is the mechanical device that transfers the pilots input (the cyclic stick) to the spinning rotor. It's tricky because the cyclic stick doesn't usually directly tilt the rotor mast, but causes the rotor disk to fly to the desired tilt. That's why, in the animation, when there...

White-sided dolphin earbone (periotic) structures
มุมมอง 56015 ปีที่แล้ว
This animation demonstrates the interior structure of the earbone (periotic bone) of a Pacific White-sided dolphin. Although this animation gives the illusion that the bone is merely a hollow shell, it is actually very hard solid bone (with a density similar to teeth) containing the hollow tubular structures shown (cochlea, semicircular canals, various ducts and vestibules). This digital recons...

    That's why it's important to slowly get light on the skids, do your hover checks n then lift off. Regardless of how the dynamic roll over is created, be quick to lower the collective. That is what will save your ass and the helicopter. Ground resonance is a totally different animal. To recover from that you quickly raise the collective to lift off before the helicopter self destructs n disintegrates...😳

    • @WonderingMindfully
      @WonderingMindfully 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look a bit closer, you'll see that the pitch horns in this animation are designed so that the pitch input to the rotor blade from the swash plate occurs 90 degrees in advance of the blade position, allowing for the effects of gyroscopic precession.

    thanks for this video, especially w/o air resistance. It threw me off the other day when I saw an Enstrom hovering with rotors tilting left to counteract Tail Rotor drift. Thought it would be pitching the nose backwards, but this video helps put the swashplate functions of a rotor system in relation to aerodynamics. Retreating brain stall throws simple understandings out.

  • @WonderingMindfully
    @WonderingMindfully 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oops. My comment a few months ago about not showing the gyroscopic precession bit was in error. A case of thinking I was wrong, then discovering I was mistaken. Wish that happened more often. The pitch arms transfer swash plate tilt 90 degrees in advance of where the swash plate is tilting. So the swash plate and rotor disk tilt, in air,i n parallel.

    • @atomicskull6405
      @atomicskull6405 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not gyroscopic precession. When you apply cyclic to the rotor, it can't instantly apply lift so the lift gets applied out of phase of the pitch change. If you read actual textbooks on rotor wing design, they will tell you this (yes it is repeated all over that it's gyroscopic precession but it is wrong). The actual offset varies between around 70 degrees to 90 degrees depending on a bunch of factors (this proves that it's not gyroscopic precession because gyroscopic precession is always exactly 90 degrees and the phase offset of a helicopter rotor varies). Also the rotor does not "tilt", or rather, tilting is not what cases direction change, the difference in lift across the rotor disk from cyclic pitch control is what causes it to move in a particular direction. The aircraft leaning in the direction of flight is a symptom of this, it is not the cause of the directional control.

  • @WonderingMindfully
    @WonderingMindfully 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing that this simple video doesn't show is very important and I may modify the video to show it. It is gyroscopic precession. Because of gyroscopic precession, forces applied to the spinning rotor result in movement 90 degrees later in the rotation. So in reality, pushing the cyclic forward tips the swashplate to the right, increasing pitch on the rotor to the left of the aircraft and decreasing it to the right. The increase lifting force to the left of the aircraft is expressed in tipping the rotor plane forward. Helicopters are rigged to take this into account so when you press the cyclic in any direction, the rotor disk flies into a position with a tilt in that direction. I hope this makes sense.

    • @MrIsaacE
      @MrIsaacE 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      surely that 90 degrees is a product of the mechanics/aerodynamics of the blades than any gyroscopic procession. Because the direction of blade movement is not in phase with the pitch of the blades.

    • @movvvv
      @movvvv 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pitch arm from the blade is attached to the swashplate 90 degrees ahead. So if you push the cyclic forward the swashplate will tilt forward and the blade pitch is increased on the left side. So the tip path plane will tilt forward and your thrust vector will tilt forward.Otherwise it would be weird, why would you engineer controls that are not intuitive. Source: "Helicopter Performance, Stability and Control" R.W. Prouty PS: Trust me I'm an engineer :D

    • @WonderingMindfully
      @WonderingMindfully 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. I though my animation was built wrong, but I was mistaken. But if you look around at the variety of swash plate designs out there, you'll see that there are some pretty non-intuitive setups. I tried to make mine as simple as possible.
