I started restoring old engines and gensets during covid19, I was putting montarges of stills on youtube as I thought others may like to see what I do, it then progressed into make video's of the restorations but I never understood how hard it could be to video and referb. I try to do different things in each video to improve them for the viewers as I know it's not fun watching boring video's. I'm very grateful for all constructive criticism and welcome suggestions from the viewers

Good evening, where did you find the exploded view of the tractor?
Hi Matteo on the Case IH website, look for your make and model and they have all the exploded diagrams, part descriptions and part numbers, you can also down load the diagrams individually and save then to your computer many thanks Barry
Hello Barry, we love your videos, we are the people in Australia and our gearstick came out ............ we are trying to make things a bit safer with the 885, just purchased a new pto plastic cover/guard, and now looking at ways to block of the large area between the rear of the driver seat and pto shaft, we are on steep slopes here and we are just trying to improve safety, it has a cab on which is also the ROPS, . We just got new front rims and tyres and brand new rear rims and tyres bit of an ordeal when you live a 200km round trip from anything. We are also trying to figure out whether to put water in the new tyres or not, we dont use the tractor when its wet or muddy so we dont need the water weight for traction, only for possibly better stability on the slopes, but we have no implements on the front and always have the slasher on the back for the extra weight. If anyone at all woul d like to share knowledge on these subjects or own experience, all would be appreciated, we love our old 885, (i just want to mention that all the research i did on tractor safety said, 90% of deaths was because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt so we got a safety apprvoved retractable lat belt and fitted it, i was surprised by that statistic) btw, I am the wife of the driver, lol
G Day Phoenix, pleased to hear your improving safety for the user's, in my mind you can never have enough safety with machines, mind if you watch me in my video's you would never think I used to be a Health and Safety person in the engineering world, i know I should be doing things or wearing some safety items but i find it gets in the way of what I'm trying to do, The biggest one for me is safety glasses that always mist up. My new year resolution will be to start doing things safer. Hi Barry, Was the O ring for relief valve the right shape and size, because I bought an O ring kit which were the same parts number as yours. What I found out is they reduced the size of the relief valve outlet and the O ring I recieved doesn't fit the pump I have. Looks like I'll have to get an O ring custom made. Cheers Bruce
Hi Bruce, some after market parts are not fit for purpose, some of those Oring kits have problems with the cross section size, I found that I had to buy metric equivilants as they had a larger cross section, Have a look on my community section there should be an email on there regarding the sizes for the pump, you'll need to check to amke sure you've got protrudance above the surface to give you the seal, I found also the kit for the camels humps was useless, again metric Orings where put in there. many thanks Barry

I miss you doing the tractor. Your inspiration endures though as I have got stuck in with my mate on his DB850 and started reassembly. Complete strip of the front end and engine. In the last few weeks 4 new liners in, crankshaft in, new rings gapped and fitted to all 4 pistons and home in the new pots. Looking good and little tips from you helped along the way . Cheers

Hi jan, yes it does, I would always give the parts a token clean before, however it will work even if not cleaned as the hot soapy water begins to disolve the grease and oil and then get to work on the rust and the best part is when your finished, let it stand for two or three days and the dirt and rust settles to the bottom and the water can be dispossed of down the drain, then let the rest evaporate and your left with rusty dust that can be put in the bin. make sure your in a well ventilated area as this gives off hydrogen which can go pop if you don't treat it with respect. cheers Jan Barry

this is the best video ever seen on the hydraulics of a selectamatic. adjusting the spoolvalve should interest any hobbyist. but how important is the tcu valve?when you don't use the tcu?
Hi Jan, I would think it's very important, even if not used, My thought train would be if the valve is setup correctly 100% it's easier to diagnose problems when they occur, if you only set the bits you use, the bits we don't set may have an adverse effect on the remaining parts of the valve, and it's only a two minute job, Self satisfaction should also be considered, if it's worth doing do it right. and it's fun. Hi Jan, not sure if the heads are different but there is a change in part number after 71, some of the fittings also look different and there a difference in the valves, pre 76 used different exhaust and inlet, post 71 used the same valve for both

Hello Barry My liftarms wil going down. Anything looks good Spool valve is moving TCU valve is moving also I dont have reinstal the the spring and the cable on the backside and I dont reinstal the lever Where you normally operate the lift. I pull and push the rod.

Hello. Many thanks again for this video. One of my 885 wheel bearings is shot, about to do this job. For anyone about to do this job, Knott trailer brake shoes are the perfect dimensions for the packing pieces, just chop the brake lining pieces off. I happened to have some in a scrap pile, thank goodness i don't throw stuff away. Many thanks.

Many thanks for these videos. I recently bought an 885, first main jobs are hydraulics and brakes. Have removed the pto housing and hydraulic pump, will be removing the valve chest tomorrow. So far i have discovered handfuls of sand/grit and a severed pto oil feed pipe. Your videos are a tremendous help, thank you.
Hi Mark, only to pleased to help, I'm pleased you find the video's useful. Sounds normal for an old tractor, just make sure you wash everything thoughly as hydraulics and sand really don't like each other. You'll find , when you take your valve chest to bits, the tolerences inside are microns and what ever you do, do not use abraasive paper or paste to clean the spools and inserts, use only metal polish and newspaper. enjoy many thanks Barry

In my house the plug sockets are from 72mm ( ideal), 60mm ( can put up with) & 20mm (far to low!) from the floor. Being tall the higher the better! Good job on your 1st fix electrics.
What are air walls?
Hi TC, the electrics in the house were put in at 300mm in the days it was built, then there was a change in the regs to make it easier for disabled people and they raised the height to 450mm, funny though as I get older I doappreciate the higher sockets, not having to get on your knees to plug in lol cheers TC Barry

Well done Barry it's never easy running cable through a building, I was saying attach string to the first cable, as you later said, whilst watching the video - it sounds like we've had similar experiences. I love the fishing rods for feeding the cable, I've used curtain wire (for net curtains) to feed narrow wires such as telephone or alarm cable an an 8ft length of plastic rail for heavier cables in the past but your set of rods is a much better system. Keep up the good work Terry
cheers Terry, some of the shots make the sub floor look clean, then you hit the areas where the builders left the rubble in the void or the heating engineers left all the trunking from the hot air system in place and it's nipped between the concrete and the joist so you cannot get over it or under it. Before I got the rods which save a lot of time I would use old wire coat hangers, straightened out and taped together, those rods are a god send. Came in very usefull for feeding the 22mm water pipes as well. many thanks Barry

Nice work once again Barry, I agree with Debs that the internal doors should be 30". A 33" door is normally fitted to an external access, when we got UPVC they fitted a front door with a 30" opening to replace the original 33" door due to the bulk of the frame and when we got a new suite access was so tight that we had to remove the door from its hinges to get the sofa in whereas it sailed through the 33" porch door and into the front room. We do have 27" doors into the downstairs toilet but this works fine. It is a good idea to leave the architraves off (and the skirting boards if you intend to replace them) until the walls have been plastered, but I guess you already know this. All the best Terry

Hi Baz, gopro's need an air flow to keep cool, they are briliant action cams but out of place in the way I'm using it as the cooling is non exisitant, when you pick them up they are red hot, more so if you use the preview link via blue tooth. need a black diamond cam corder
Best of luck with the renovations and you are right about the electrics, stick with the ring circuits and avoid the radials.

Well i admit your doing rather a good job looks from your walk around outside a cracking bungalow inside will be equally as good im sure. One question ive noticed you seem to have nice floorboards are you going to sand and stain or cover in carpet or anything else?

You're really cracking on with the renovations Barry although these sort of jobs are always more involved than you realise at first and end up taking longer than you think they will when you first start out. It probably happens when someone puts the manifold block back on the front of the valve chest before inserting the needle then try’s to force the needle past the block many thanks Barry
From tractor mechanic to carpenter, you can do it all! I'm with you on the soreness, lol. Spent yesterday and this morning getting another load from the house we're selling. After driving 165 miles down here to the new place, I got out of the truck and my legs almost refused to work! 800mg of Ibuprofen later I'm starting to feel better, lol
Hi Shane, I love the way Americans and Australians talk about mileage as if it’s just around the corner lol, 165 miles for us in the little UK would be a days travel with food stops, traffic jams and road accidents, my ibuprofen come's in a 750ml green bottle with a cork in the top. thank you for your reply. My vectra c engine is 1.9 cdti 110 kw, but probably the principle of operation of the starter is the same, the cog has to slide out and rotate, mine only rotates. Could it be a solenoid problem?
@@kastytismiliauskas-ev7pp your solenoid does two things, when energised it will soot the gear forward to engage the starter ring and when it reaches the end of its travel it will connect the power to spin the motor, so if you motor is turning it's reaching the end of it travel, have a look at your gear is it stuck in one position or can you move it by hand, it may well be just dirt on the shaft it run on, remove the solenoid and check it's pulling the leaver to engage the gear and at the same time give the shaft a wash with brake clean, make sure everythings free and mobile.
Barry This was a very educational video. I am currently doing the same thing. I had the problem that the lifting bars lowered very slowly. First I turn on the button on the front.That wasn't it.Everything was expanded and I saw that the ridge at the bottom of the valve Chest. The spool valve Not or hardly pressed upwards. There are shims where the cam and the arm are attached. I took a chance and removed two of them. Now I see the spool valve Move up and down. It all comes down to very precise, I'll let you know if it worked

Bloody hell Barry you are not afraid of a bit of a project. You will probably find it a nice change from the tractor for a while. I find a change of direction now and then refreshing.
G Day Lance, thats very true, It's funny but as you get older jobs that took day's to do now takes weeks, the job hasn't changed, I just got older and less flexible. Knowing that we'll end up with extra rooms so the little people can come and stay and a garage that we can work on the tractor in the winter, win win. cheers Lance Barry

A really big project Barry and another series for your TH-cam channel if you could fit it in, is this the house with the two garages where you keep the Tractor? If you are concerned about flow on the central heating you could split the circuit, we have a 22mm ring supply from the boiler with one manifold supplying 10mm to 4 rooms at the back of the house and a second manifold supplying 10mm to 3 rooms at the front plus the downstairs bathroom with the upstairs bathroom being teed in with 10mm to the 22mm ring. This has worked great for 30 years - All the pipe in our system is copper and we have a 105,000 BTU boiler. Good luck going forward, it'll be great to see the finished result.
Hi Terry, thats the plan, to run a 22mm flow and return through the bungalow with the rads T'd off, basicaslly forming a very large manifold, I installed the current heating in the house we're now in using manufactured manifolds and it work great, Thought I had nothing else to do but repeat up there, turns out you cannot buy those manifolds anymore, hence the 22mm pipe and loads of reducing T's, It is the house with the two garages, I'm hoping to knock through the wall between then later on and create a double, giving me more space, one strange thing, the consumer unit is in the garage with only an electric roller door on the front, if the socket fuse blows, at the minute you can not get access to it to replace the fuse, this needs sorting PDQ. Roller doors often have an access hole where you can insert a lever similar to a car jack handle as a manual override, this is the case at my Dad's garage as he has exactly the same situation with the consumer unit in an otherwise inaccessible location. P.S. You could finish you videos with it's only pipes and wires!
