There's a lot of really good videos out there about the Hawaii Mars making it's last flight to become an exhibit at the BC Aviation Museum. But this one... is mine. It pretty much covers my whole August 11th of plane spotting. I just realized how infrequently I've seen a Beaver without floats. Grew up in the Yukon, so your experience may be different.
@@robburrows9786 it's similar here in Western Washington, the majority of Beavers are on floats.
Well done Simon! These are some amazing classic warbirds and you captured them beautifully. Hope all is well my friend. Best...Corrie
Thank you! I'll doing well, and I hope you are too. Unfortunately my airshow plans this weekend are a bit messed up due to weather.
I didnt realize there is a flying Husky still out there. My Dad worked on that design in his days at Kaman.
That's very cool! It's as rare to hear from someone that worked on these aircraft as it is to see one fly. The Olympic flight museum still flies this one occasionally, but the rotors are running low on remaining time.
I did not know there was a flying Pedro . Cool!
@@shawno.8348 That was the first time I've ever seen it, but I guess Olympic flight museum flies it occasionally.
This is the kind of plane that Harrison Ford flies
Very cool love this bro
You would have loved the show!
No seaplane event would be complete without at least one Beaver. Looks like a well attended event.
@@mothmagic1 Very well attended. My expectations were pretty high and I was still blown away.
Wow! Impressive landing!
@@elbywest5977 He's a very good pilot!

Great video Simon! The aircraft are amazing and the scenery is spectacular too!
@@leftcoastcorrie I was only there for a short time, so I didn't get much, but that scenery makes it an excellent location. It's beautiful there.
Fantastic video, I live in Yakima and it's just amazing to watch that video with the ground that you are familiar with thank you again, happy trails
Thank you for the compliment!
Really nice footage Simon, it looks like you got to pack a ton of spotting into your island adventure. Great shot of the Hawaii Mars making its final landing ever, and cool to see the mix of all the other action going on!
@@TheHDAviation Thank you! As always, after it was over I thought about all the better spots I could have been. But I'm just glad I was able to be there at all. There was nothing like hearing it in person.

Well crafted production, Simon Butler. Enjoyable viewing.
@@helios1912 thank you!
It’s awesome to see how much water actually falls from the ground perspective! Thanks for doing what you do 💪🏼🙏🏼
@@Laska420 all thanks to the firefighters! My friend is one of them and gave me the footage.
I grew up close to the Mars water bomber base on Sproat lake. I saw countless landings and takeoffs all my life. It breaks my heart to see her doing its last ever landing in Pat Bay. Soon the second bomber Philippine Mars ( in navy blue livery) will be restored to flying condition leaving my area for a long final flight to Tucson Arizona museum. Sproat Lake will be a lot emptier without these big birds around. but Im glad their going to museums, finally. I want come to Sidney to see the Hawaii Mars on display in October.
@@rEdf196 I look forward to visiting it too. It's sad they won't be flying anymore, but it's amazing they did such dangerous work and survived to retire. I'm happy about that.
Can anyone tell us where the plane will be after this landing? Tied up in the harbour?
@@PeterNGloor they put the beaching gear on, and it's currently up on land near the seaplane base. They will eventually move it over to the museum for display.
@@SimonButler Ok, thank you, so there is a ramp someplace wide enough for the plane. Hope somebody took a vid of this move.
@@PeterNGloor if you look up the BC Aviation Museum TH-cam channel, I think they have a short video about it.

Great video, have to go there, definitely on my bucket list. As for the landing, we all have those, my “3 landings in one” at ORS during their fly in certainly wasn’t my best. Let’s find a way to do some flying together this summer. 👍👍
@@GingerThePlane I still really want to do a Canada flight. I've joined the CAF Rainier squadron and a lot of my weekends filled up going to flying events supporting the Reliant operations, and getting video footage of the events for this channel. Doesn't help that my plane is in maintenance right now for failed fuel gauges.
A lot of rookies.
This is a very difficult field to land when winds are not optimal. 15 years ago there was a horrible accident there of a low-time pilot trying to land with tail wind over the lake and didn't make it. So your decision to take the rarely used mountain approach may have been the better one. At least if things gone wrong you had better chances to go around. As the NTSB report details, the go-around from lake approach with a tail wind was deadly. I would cautioned anyone without significant experience from going there, especially on days with suboptimal winds and density altitude. www.asias.faa.gov/apex/f?p=100:17:::NO::AP_BRIEF_RPT_VAR:WPR09FA316
Nice video, Simon. Tieton Airport is on my list to visit.
Thank you, and it's definitely worth checking out.
It wasn't that bad... I wanted to go there last weekend (never been) but fires had runway closed (TFR). When did you go?
@@kiphaynes I was there July 5th, just between fire TFRs.
Very nice video. We instructors like the camera between the seats view. Terrain and trees put us off some from techniques that we may be more comfortable with at the home airport. However, full flaps and deceleration to a bit of sink brings throttle into dynamic play for exact glide angle and rate of descent control without the speed up common with the forward slip. The wind is our friend. Yes, with a long runway, a downwind landing up slope works well. But the other way with a good headwind allows an approach with very slow ground speed and long look at the situation where we don't see the runway until late. Good job though.
Bad soft field landing because?...landing long?...downhill?...please explain...thank you...
@@Mtnhiker56 landing long and coming down on all three landing great pretty hard after my float. Hard contact is pretty much what you want to avoid on soft fields. However, luckily, this field was not very soft, even though it was grass.
It's a license to learn...glad you had fun...be sure to watch your density altitude...and loading...good luck!
@@Mtnhiker56 yeah, we chose to depart early in the morning to take advantage of the slightly cooler air and better performance. I didn't want to try it later on, we were around 90°F that weekend.
Good choices!
This trip was awsome
@@farmerjoe000 I'm glad you think so! There's more coming.
Great video! A camera between the seats, showing the dashboard and the pilot's view would be fantastic too. It's like we could fly with you. Greetings from Brazil
@@ielside1 I liked that idea, and tried it before, but the camera was in shade and the outside would end up washed out with brightness on sunny days. There's probably ways to solve that, but moving the camera position was my best solution for now.
It is not a dashboard, it is an instrument panel. Early buggies got that name because the original dashboard was a board to keep the horse from kicking dirt in your face. Why they still call it that in autos beats me.
@@ggeorge4144 if I can get even more pedantic about it, it's actually a glare shield we're talking about.
Cool video. Beautiful flying! Thank you for posting this.😎
@@snsjets Thank you very much for the compliments!
Was the grass long? The surface didn't look soft at all.
@@SkywardVentures the grass was sparse, but long. Luckily it hadn't rained for a while and the surface was hard. No real risk of digging in, but I didn't know that when I slammed it down. It just wasn't good technique.

Over the years my dad had 2 1946 Seabees, CF-DLP and CF-DLS, loved flying in them and the sound of it's engine, not the car engines being used to-day.
@@CMan-rt9in Car engines?
@@SimonButler Car engines Yes. Some older aircraft have used ZR1 corvette engines. If you see a Bee with a low wider cowling, then it's a car engine, if not it's the original, possibly a Franklin or Lycoming. Sorry for spelling.
@@CMan-rt9in I'll keep that in mind, I've seen them geared Franklin's and Lycomings.
@@SimonButler Story time, goody, goody. Many, many moons ago I was up in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and walking down the Main street when I heard that sound. Right away in my mind ,it sounded like a Seabee engine, sure enough as I looked up a Seabee flew by. The next day I flew to Juneau AK and there was a Seabee parked with other small private aircraft. Seabee memories.
@@CMan-rt9in I'm actually at a splash in today and a guy brought a Seabee.
