Sespe Wilderness Backpacking: Alder Creek to Johnston Ridge
Last Spring (2024), I set out to find an interesting loop option that included Johnston Ridge and the Sespe Hot Spring, which is located in the Los Padres National Forest, Sespe Wilderness. I looked into Alder Creek and found that there were far more interesting features in this part of the Sespe Wilderness than Hot Springs, especially considering I had already been to the pools before.
This video features clips from two separate outings. The first outing took place on May 20th, 2024 and the second took place on September 24th, 2024.
Total Distance: 29 miles

On August 27th, 2024, I took a hike up the North Ridge of Iron Mountain via the infamous East Fork San Gabriel River in Southern California's Angeles National Forest. Outstanding effort.....congratulations!
Thank you! Love the route. As soon as I forget that I hate it.
I find those balloons EVERYWHERE in the mountains around LA
Removing them has become a game. Gotta catch 'em all!
Nice Video! I've been wanting to check out the Alder Creek Trail while. I went to the Sespe Hot Springs on cool day in August via Johnston ridge earlier this summer, and it was quite nice. Someone made a pool beneath the hot waterfall, which I hadn't seen the lats few times I had been ~2020-2022. I've also been via Sespe River Trail. I'm hoping I have time to try Alder Creek sometime soon, but it may have to wait until next spring. Also, did you film this recently? I'm curious about water for filtration on Alder Creek since I've never been that way.
Thanks for watching. Both those trails are gorgeous. I may go back for the sepse trail video with the pooch next spring as well. Alder Creek had plenty of water throughout in the spring and juuuust enough in September. You shouldn't need to carry more than 3 liters at a time in the fall depending on your navigation prowess). I probably never carried more than 2 liters with out the dog in September, but I knew the route. Most water sources that I assumed wouldn't flow year around, weren't.
@@trvrsoutdoors Good to know! Thanks! I might try it in the spring from Dough Flat depending on when it opens. I'm not familiar with the route, but would consider trying it on a cold day before then if it works with my schedule.
YES!!!!!!!!!!
A classic! Thanks for watching.
Always wondered what was back there. Thanks!
Wonder no more!
Good video and nice editing. I know it's not easy to make it all work together when doing solo videoing. I love the Sespe and miss it. Such a wild place, and mostly uncrowded. Any worry about the dog and snakes? Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for acknowledging the effort involved in these videos. With the two combined efforts and difficulty of this route, editing proved to be more difficult than any other video I've done, so it means a lot when people appreciate it. Wildlife is always a concern when taking Canelo out and I'm learning to be a better owner with each outing. He is rattlesnake aversion trained and I keep in on leash more and more with every trek. Its absolutely not worth harming him even though he loves to roam free. This was one of two outings that really taught me to watch what I do with him. The other was an attempt on Split Mountain. I'm working on the video now. He had a rough time and since these two trips, I usually just get him a sitter when I go out to do anything I haven't done before. He seems satisfied with the local trails anyhow.
@@trvrsoutdoors You went up Split with Canelo! Oh wow! That's great that he is snake trained, very smart idea. I camped with my dog once at Rose Valley falls in Los Padres and I think I am lucky she didn't find a snake. Keep sharing the adventures!
@@speed_of_a_human he didn't actually make it up split. But he got up to 13k. He could have made it. I didn't care to keep pushing him. I want him to have good memories in the mountain with me, not traumatizing ones.
Thanks for returning to video the pictographs. They are a testament to the ingenutiy and curiosity of man. You treat Canelo so well. You worked hard for your adventure (bee stings, poison oak) but you were also well rewarded. Thanks for sharing with us armchair adventurers
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. I actually removed a clip from the video where I noted that I felt that it was important to document those walls. I'm glad you agree. A small handful of people have been back there and even less can handle a camera while doing it, so I'm happy to oblige! Hopefully I did it justice.
Visla?
That is correct!
Great exploration.
Thanks. Someone asked me what my favorite trek was this year and this was it. Even with all of its horrendous difficulties. I wanted to do it twice and loved it both times.
Aww.. Canelo so happy outside with his cute little pack..and then so sad for his bath Lol ..The view of the clouds was nice and that cave! Eerie in such a cool way! Thanks :)
Haha. Yeah love the contrast between home in the bath and outside in the mountains, but a worthy trade off I hope. Loved this unique outing so much. Thanks for watching.
Crazy (but in a good way). All that water must have been a welcome relief after all that tough hiking (can we call what you do "hiking"?). Can't imagine the anxiety of being stung by dozens of... whatever... and not knowing exactly how your body would respond. Definitely a reminder to pack some antihistamine. Canelo's a rockstar. That was a tough few days.
Yes, the water kept me sane. A lot of that brush ends up under my clothing and mixes with sweat and dirt. I bathed three times during this trek to relieve myself of that mess. And yes, the wasp battle was a first. I'm very grateful to have been fine and I immediately put Benadryl in my pack when I got home. Canelo definitely had a rough time. The brush was one thing, but having to be carried by his harness for a collective mile left him a little rash on his pits and belly. It took him 3 days to recover. I'm more careful about where I take him now and often just get him a sitter if I'm doing anything I haven't done yet.
@@trvrsoutdoors Cool. Glad there were no significant lasting effects. Hiking/ backpacking with dogs (huskies), I understand completely about trail choices (both good and bad) when it comes to dogs. I felt your pain every time Canelo went one way and you wanted to go the other. Or when his leash got caught on a branch. I also couldn't help but wince every time I saw those fields of what looked like foxtail plants. The huskies would have needed to be shaved. Hopefully, Canelo's fur is more forgiving.
He didn't seem to get any foxtails in his feet and neither did I really. while there are other thorny plants to worry about, as soon as I learned to recognize them, I just avoided them. If Canelo didn't hate water, I would honestly have brought him back for another round. I honestly thing that carrying him by the harness did the most harm.
Another incredible 3/ or 4 day trip! The views are spectacular & some of the trail looked very dangerous ! The mountain views looked awesome & breathtaking. You & Canelo are a fantastic team .Canelo🐕🦺 is a beast ,also Canelo 🐕 is an incredible companion & a great protector.Your trip was another great adventure & the wildlife (animals) seemed to embrace you 2 trailblazers ! Keep your vids coming👌, the scenary and landscape is fantastic! Godspeed R.J. 🤠& Canelo.🐕🦺🧗🤗💪🍻💯

@@trvrsoutdoors It made me a outdoorsmen:)
This is fantastic. Thank you for sharing this expedition. Absolutely kickass work.
Glad you enjoyed watching. Thank you. This is definitely one worth sharing, considering how difficult it is to reach and what it offers.
Canelo is back!! He is such a good boy. Gotta make sure you carry Benadryl next time. Bees/wasp allergy can be real bad, I’m glad you survived. The pictographs are very interesting, thanks for taking us to your adventure because not everyone has the capability to hike and see these artifacts. Happy Trails.
"not everyone has the capability to hike and see these artifacts" This is a big part of why I wanted to document this. Thanks on the Benadryl recommendation. I added it to my pack as soon as I got back.
have u ever been to the falls ?
Not yet. It's in the closure area, so probably not in the books for me. But it totally looks like a hidden gem. Would love to at least get close. Maybe in another life.
@@trvrsoutdoors i’ll check it out
It's wonderful to watch your exertions. I too have done some of your deliriously delightful routes. ( North side of Iron Mtn...masochist much? ) It was simply 55 years ago. My best life memories are of what you are capturing with your GoPro. Gone are the days of lugging single lens reflex cameras to get quality stills. I like your timing with the camera. Keep it up young man.
55 years ago. I would love to have the opportunity to see this unique place then. It's funny that you brought up the camera. 5 years ago, I tried to make these videos, and the technology still wasn't there. Gopro's footage was still too shakey, and the batteries would die in mildly cold weather. Once the 10 came out, I decided to try again. Same for mobile devices. I'm definitely grateful to have the opportunity to share these outings, especially with people like you who understand what these places mean, let alone how difficult they are to reach. Cheers.
I check out what you are doing, and it gives me ideas on where to go next. Keep up the amazing content. 👍
I'm happy to help guide the adventure! Thank you for watching. I definitely have some more content coming that will inspire knuckle dragging awe and beauty.
nice work on the descent. keep up the good work and love for the sierra!
Thank you for watching all the way through! So much to explore. I will definitely keep up both!
Going up the established trail of Skyline Ridge is hard enough! Here you are blazing a trail on that rocky ridge. Much respect!
Thank you very much.. Something about the inhospitable nature of these places keeps me coming back. Just an absolute blast and no one to hear me cry.
I really appreciate you showing the parts going back down!!!
Any time. I figured leaving that kind of footage at the end could be really useful to someone that prefers taking a look at the entire route as opposed to my spoken word about it .

Tried it today....got swallowed up in the willows above Lower Boy Scout Lake and tried to skirt them on the south side but hit steep, impassible slabs. The advice to head to the north side of all that bushwhacking is spot on here.....I can attest from experience. Will be back to try the exciting part of the climb -- the ridge itself -- again in the future. Nice video!
Thank you for checking it out, and bummer I couldn't give you the advice before you effort! Same thing happened to me once. Good luck on your next endeavor
@@trvrsoutdoors Thanks, and keep making your awesome videos! :-)
I'm not a good mountaineer. Have you climbed up Mt. Whitney mtnering route and turned right. Is it a possible long traverse?
I'd imagine you'd hit some 4th or 5th class granite spires up there. The Secor book mentions that you can ascend the whitney russell pass and cross into the arctic lake basin, so I'm sure you can make a day of exploring that area. But you'd have to look do some additional research to find out more. Someone MUST have done it.
You are truly awesome!
Aw man, thanks! Just trying to share a little bit of the local range.
Your athleticism is so impressive! Love seeing your adventures. Your videos are very impressive and I have sent them to my students at Caltech who also hike longer distances. I have been active with Summits on the Air which a fun way to combine peak bagging with ham radio. There are many peaks in the Sierra which have not been activated with the radio… your call sign could be on them! Best of luck!
Wow, that looked brutal. And so cool. How did you manage getting down with so little water left?
A lot of the reason I completed this hike during this heat wave was because I had left a cache on Allison saddle earlier in the year. It had some expensive crampons and water, which I planted for a spring accent on the San Antonio Ridge Traverse. When the Fork Fire happened, I thought I would lose my gear and decided to retrieve it before the next fire. There were two smart water bottles stashed with the winter gear. I would have made it without the bottles since I only ended up drinking half one, but it being there helped me feel secure about the entire ascent. If that wasn't there I might have turned back. I'm so glad I made thr decision to retrieve the gear since my hunch was right, and now this entire area will be under closure for the next two to three years.
The good news is the brush is gone.
Ouch haha. Too soon
Cool! Live local and have always hiked elsewhere. Nice to see SGV trails. Knarly peak!
They're worth checking out. Especially now, before they're all gone :(

Thank you so much for posting this! My heart has been broken since I watched Iron Mountain burning (from Ganesha Hills, 09/10/2024).. As soon as the winter rains come, the East Fork will fill with burnt mountain run-off, and likely the surviving canyon bottom ecosystem will be buried. I’m glad to got up there when you did.
Thank you for mentioning this. It's definitely been a rollercoaster of emotions. I was actually supposed to head to the Sierra when I did this trek. The weather wasn't even good, and I still gravitated toward this route. I'm glad I did. One last goodbye.
This is one of my favorite!!
A classic fun acramble!
Nice job! The Narrows looked like a fun part.. Also, I’m with you on that littering rant! One of my pet peeves
I don't want to voice too many opinions on here since some people might get turned off, but damn! This is ridiculous, and the laziness is undeniable. Thanks for watching! The narrows is absolutely a great place to swim and hang out. Spent some time getting footage there to try and capture the magic. Glad you liked it.
I took my ex-girlfriend up the Leatherneck a couple years back and we broke up shortly after. Nice capture brother, and really cool watching fellow madmen carve out their own niche in the adventure content space. Bravo!
Oh, man. Hopefully, it's for the better. I could totally see someone getting overwhelmed up there. Thank you. Trying to carve out a niche anyway. We'll see if it pays off. Gonna give it another year and see how TH-cam treats me.
@@trvrsoutdoors Well whatever your end goal may be, I do hope you reach it. In the meantime, you are providing good value and content to all the adventurers of SoCal and beyond. The algorithm just recently put you in my feed, so I'm sure you will hit some kind of critical mass very soon. Best of luck mate.
Damn man! Incredible video - looks like a sufferfest! Congrats on making it - has to be one of the most challenging in So. Cal.
Yeah, so I realize now that the thumbnail is a little clickbaity. I'm going to change it. This is definitely the hardest single peak day hike in the san Gabriel mountains, and up there with the hardest in SoCal, but it doesn't compare to Snow Creek or folly ridge.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the comment too.
That place is all on fire right now. It will be closed for at least two years.
Yes. Definitely unfortunately to see. I'm glad I was able to do this one more time since it'll probably be completely different when it opens again.

It might be easier In a couple years. Thr sweet spot would be after the storms have made that settle but before the poodle dog bush grows.
Nice going man! Too bad I could never try this. I'm extremely allergic to poison oak.
Ugh. Yeah, the entire brushy section is about a mile, and it's mostly avoidable, but it might no beworth it.
@@trvrsoutdoors Yea, I get absolutely destroyed. I hope to never run into that stuff again.
@luciano136 I get it. I'm not extremely allergic to it, but I definitely have been covered in it before, and I can totally understand if just a little has major effects on someone.

Any time! Thanks for watching. This route isn't much for instruction as you really just need to plow through the entire mountain, which is why I ended up leaning toward showcasing the experience rather than a guide style video. Just brutal.
Bro - that was some shady ascent with unreliable holds. Glad that you made it safely but do be careful. Appreciate the video
Agreed. And thank you. As much as I love our local mountains, they are very unforgiving.

That was Snow Creek! Haha. We drank way more beer during the c2c effort. But thanks. I was a little more fit then, and one of the beers was an NA. Plus this heat was so bad. Slowed to a crawl.
