Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 Excursion from New Orleans to Addis, La.
It took me a second to notice, but the Hohman Avenue crossings still had MANUAL gates and no lights all the way up to the 90s. That's pretty crazy. How the hell did it manage to go that long without being upgraded?
If you close your eyes it sounds like 1218 got a third chance and had got back on the rails
Do my eyes deceive me, or is that a young George Walker firing 4501? God rest his soul. ❤
0:37 12:33 lovely 6 chime
Date?
I've said before and I'll say it again...whos got a few million and 100+ miles of mainline with 79 mph trackspeed. It'd be something to see her pulling maximum allowable tonnage.
who's at the throttle?
Literally anyone when they see an anti like beggar: Trust me people who beg for likes are dum.
Wonder how many miles it took from that estmated 10mph roll up to 45-50mph chugg she was doing? Awesome video.
not many. I'm willing to bet she was rarely challenged
I wish I could go back in time and watch when the A's and Y's ruled the N&W ! I have many of the DVDS to watch, but just standing near the tracks when they go by must have been something else! The Y's carried the freight from Roanoke and Bluefield over the mountains, headed West, and then at Williamson, the A's took over at higher speeds on to Portsmouth and Cincinnati. The N&W had over 450 articulated A's, Y's and Z's in their history. Many, if not most, made in their own Roanoke shops!
nice to see a 'double' with out it being big boy.
The only thing about 611 that I'm wondering about is why the chimes sound like the loco has laryngitis. It doesn't sound loud enough to hear from a distance.
I hate that missed this one.
10:47 The second and last time both 587 and 765 met 611 before the NS steam program discontinued.
I listened to this while i went to sleep, turns out i watched the whole video twice. Woke up feeling rythmatic lol
I like how the sound changes whenever the black smoke clears out
Sad that Melrose is now completely unrecognizable with trees and brush covering the whole area.
She definitely sounds good 👍
It would be cool to see the three sisters running again 👍
I wonder where the round, brass plates (Builder's plates?) went? I don't see them on there. They were on each side of the smokebox...🤔
Starting at the 8 minute mark, that’s Lyman S.C. heading to Wellford.
Best video of her at low throttle where you can here all the exhaust notes at 12: 15. Great video!
Why dud Noblesville have to be gay and get rid of the transportation museum. So stupid
611 is a beauty queen for sure, but 1218 can literally handle about any job given to her. The very definition of versatility.
Looks like you will get to do it again. Keep hand on the throttle and you eye upon the rail. Life is like a mountain railroad, up on the mountain sub.
First time seeing this thanks for posting
30 years later as of 2023.
Awesome Stuff
Wow Floyd & Charlie look quite young here! 😲
Watched it race a "J"; what a butt ugly machine, but when you are on a heavy train it was pulling, it just sprinted up the side of the mountain. The beauty is in the performance!
A lot has changed at IRM since 1993. Hope you plan on coming back for another visit sometime as I volunteer there. :)

24:32 i love how 587 sounds here
Thank you for posting this. It certainly brings back great memories!
I chase 611 from Melrose junction all the way to Asheville. I remember seeing the black roses on the side of the cab. Saluda grade is a sad shape. The rails need to restore on the line.
also i just wanted to let you know i found out from the museum that Chicago North western 1385 will be back in 2025 this is what the president of the mid continet musuem told me
And hopefully WCC 1 will be next in line
25:44 the first blow could be a whistle for trainz
This is by far the finest display of steam-hauling freight trains I have ever seen in modern times.

That’s the CofG 6 Chime whistle that was on 4501.
I rode in 92 during the Independence Limited Runs
20:21 Norfolk Southern Freight clears, #587 and #765 gets under way and enter their homerails.
When I saw her
Wonder what whistle is she wearing?
PRR 3 Chime
@@brianfalzon6739 Thank you, friend!
Fort Wayne had 2 whistles on 2716 she had her original c&o hooter and the whistle you mostly hear is a Crosby 3 chime the hooter made a few great appearances in this video but I do love the Crosby 3 chime
@@robintheslavewr1513 I love Crosby 3 chime whistle on 2716 too!
I think 2716 should wear 614’s whistle from the 80’s after restoration.
Reading & Northern 4-8-4 Locomotive 2102 0:11 [train whistle] 48:05 [train chugging] 1:03:46 [train chugging] 1:12:45 [train chugging]
Aweosme coverage of these 3 Beauties. Kinda sad 587 has been in pieces for such a long time, but it is what it is.
We watched the Awesome A travel right past our home one summer. The earth shook when this marvelous machine rolled past. Unforgettable experience.
I remember that summer quite well when it went through Ohio. We lived along the N&W line in Worthington/Flint a northern suburb of Columbus. This track was right next to our neighborhood and it was a thrill watching this train roll past.
The engineer had this old girl laid out. I assume this was before they decreased the speed limits. The harder he pushed, the better she ran without any objections. They must have had her up to 50, or more. I always admired this raw technology, designed in the day when you had to draw it on paper, and make it work before it would be constructed. So sad to see this passing of a truly great era of steam.
at 7:09 I was trying to count strokes and looks like she was doing about 224 rpm, with 70 inch drivers, that almost 47 mph. Good guess.
Unfortunately this was after the Great Dismal Swamp incident in 1986 with the 611. 1218 came out just a year later, so hitting the speeds 611 and the other pre '86 engines hit wasn't possible for the 1218 and other engines who came into the latter years of the steam program. Still, a great show nonetheless.
