    The workbench came out beautifully. For your first and first for some of the methods used, you did an incredible job. I do like the randomness and variation in color you get from pallet wood. So you decided not to incorporate the table saw? You can always make a cart the same height, using similar wood on wheels that you can use with the workbench as an outfeed table. And you can still roll it off to the side when not in use. I made a 6-ft long circular saw crosscut jig using linear rails and it is so easy to use, dead accurate that I use my tablesaw anymore. I keep a dado stack on a radial arm saw, for dados, and rabbits when needed. I have yet to use pallet wood for a big project yet. I'm thinking of covering the OSB walls with it in my shop. Best of luck and that you for sharing this journey with us!

    • @MelbourneMaker
      @MelbourneMaker 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks mate! Yes, I ended up not integrating the table saw into it as I'm hoping the workbench outlasts the table saw. I've since done exactly as you suggested and made the table saw cart a bit higher than the workbench so I can use it as an outfeed if needed. Panelling walls with either pallet wood or even just offcuts does look amazing.

    That is beautiful, even with the small mistakes! I love pallet wood, although I tend to use it for "sacrificial" benches, especially the rare structural ply pallet find. They make great sacrificial bench tops. I need a nail remover. I hadn't realised how much until I watched you break up the pallet(s?) you used. I've seen people build guitars (including acoustic) out of pallet wood, so recycling pallets is even good enough for musicians of a lofi persuasion, at least. (I hate the tonewoods myth - it's denuding rainforests for untalented teens. I was one of those untalented teens 45 years ago, so I'm allowed to say that.)

    Make yourself a small ~10mm "hole saw" from a thick wall tube of some sort by just grinding/filing some teeth into one end. It will help tremendously in getting those nails out that snapped off even with the surface (at least ones you actually notice in time :) , just put the 'saw' over the nail and drill down 5-10mm. The saw will quickly create a neat pocket around the nail, allowing you to grab it with locking pliers. As a side note, when cutting sharp angles on the combination miter saw, do lock the 'miter' function so it's just a chop saw, and do brace your hand against something (or better yet, clamp the piece down with something other than your hand). Last thing you want is for the saw blade to catch and jump up and over the board, pulling your hand into itself in the process.

    • @MelbourneMaker
      @MelbourneMaker 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Cheers mate. I'll give the hole saw trick a go appreciate it. I really should have used a sacrificial fence on the chop saw as well. Not sure why I didn't think of it at the time.

    • @MelbourneMaker
      @MelbourneMaker 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi mate, the inserts are called splines. Basically I made the ends the same way i do picture frames, admittedly a bit more rough as I just used the chop saw for the 45 degree cuts. Honestly it probably didn't even need splines as there was plenty of glu area on the mitres, but helps it look slightly fancier than it actually is. The spline jig is super simple to make (not a bad video idea, thanks) but if I am honest you can actually cut splines just using the table saw without a jig. Raise the blade up and set some sort of a stop on your fence so when you run it through you only cut a corner out and don't go too far. It will end up rounded inside, but won't matter as no one will see it, and will probably just fill with glue anyway. Hope that makes sense
