The first building mentioned used to be a bar, but it closed down since they couldn’t obtain a liquor license. The Elgin State Bank was repurposed as a post office until its closure in the 1970s. Margaret’s Cafe was the only business running downtown when I was there. Local farmers & ranchers used to come by and get a bite to eat at lunchtime. It also served as a school bus stop for the children who went to school in Sedan. The bridge is registered as a landmark. It is the reason why it has not been replaced compared to other bridges in the area. There are several similar bridges in the county which were torn down and replaced with more modern bridges. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cedar_Creek_Bridge_(Elgin,_Kansas) Once Elgin lost the railroad and shipment point and Oklahoma was granted its statehood, the town started its death spiral. Margaret’s Cafe and its adjoining museum hundred of pictures showing Elgin’s colorful past. A couple of pictures even showed a lynching from the bridge on the Oklahoma side of border. The Dalton gang and several outlaws used to stay awhile before hiding in the caves west of town or crossing the border into Indian territory. At that time only federal marshals had the authority to follow and arrest these desperados. Elgin had a short oil boom in the early part of the 20th century due to surface oil bubbling up nearby. Elgin used those oil pools to dip cattle for pest & tick removal before shipping them on boxcars to all points in America. Elgin added sulfur to their oil to be compliant with Texas oil standards for dipping. Overproduction dried up most of the surface oil and people started to drift away. I think Elgin may have attempted to become the county seat for Chautauqua county, but they lost out to Sedan in their bid. Elgin built wide brick streets with cement curbs and modern sewage pipes to beautify the town. It nearly bankrupted the town when the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression hit the town and they could not pay bonds.

The old Wann School gym is private property now. The structure next to it was the school building. It was torn down years ago after the school consolidated with others. A new school was built on Highway 10 and 169. There was a plaque on the gym, but it was stolen years ago. Yes the six flag poles over Wann sign needs replaced. But there is no funding. I am from Wann and could give you more history. I'm glad you did a video on it.

The CAM is a nice place to visit. If you have a chance, check out the American flight Museum (two buildings over). They operate Spooky- the AC47. The CAM had a split between pilots and regular museum folks a few years ago. Many of the museum people felt that it was too expensive to operate flying aircraft, so those who wanted to fly split into the American flight museum.

The small natural rock buildings on top of the ridges of the hills were built during the WPA (Works Progress Administration 1935 to 1939). They served no real purpose other than lookout points to hike up to. There are hiking trails going up the canyon walls to them. The dam itself was a WPA project as well. The lake was dredged out about 20 years ago since it had silted in badly. It is fed by numerous natural springs coming directly out of the base of the canyon walls from the Ogallala Aquifer. The stucco Boat House at the swimming area has been there at least since the 1940s.

I grew up in Logan County and spent MANY weekends at Lake Scott, the Badlands, Little Jerusalem, Butterfield Overland Trail, etc, etc. Many days searching for artifacts, native flint tools, fossils, metal detecting the old US Cavalry camps and taking landscape/wildlife photographs. The soils in that area a heavy with sand and no clay so they wash out easily therefore the "roughness". These videos has brought back a FLOOD of great memories. Thank You!!!

Thanks for showing our pretty dam and lake! We live about 2 miles from the campground where you took the video. Actually, I walk our dogs around that campground a few times a week, even in the winter months. As far as the water being let out of the dam, it's actually a rarity when they aren't letting water out. Any rain we get out here usually causes the lake to rise significantly and they will let water out to bring it back to normal levels. Yes, that's a nice campground. You can usually get a camping spot anytime, except for the holiday weekends. I've never seen it full otherwise. Come on out for a weekend and explore the lake! Great video!!
