On my way to do some Parks on the Air I took the opportunity to ride through the Fall Foliage. Stay tuned for the POTA video coming soon!
Hilly Hundred 2024!
มุมมอง 4614 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I'm a bit late posting this, but it's definitely worth a watch! The Hilly Hundred is an annual bike ride that happens every fall around Bloomington, Indiana. We get stunning fall foliage during this time, and the ride takes place when the colors are at their peak. The route winds through several state forests, including the Hoosier National Forest, offering amazing scenery and, of course, lots ...
PACKTENNA Field Test at US-7369
มุมมอง 249หลายเดือนก่อน
I finally got a chance to head out to a park and do a proper test of the Packtenna. This antenna is a work horse! It was a breeze to setup but also performed very well. We were getting solid signal reports from all over the country, and even into France! We started with the 20m EFHW configuration and successfully activated the park. We then added the 40m extension and continued to recieve pile-...
Packtenna: Dirty Setup
มุมมอง 588หลายเดือนก่อน
Got a new Packtenna in the mail and couldn't wait to get it in the air! I was doing some grilling on a beautiful evening and decided to try out the antenna. The setup was not ideal but I was losing daylight and I wanted to see how it would perform in poor conditions. It did great! Stay tuned for another video coming soon where I do a full field test of this awesome antenna!

What might this tune be called
@@LiamFigureido this tune is "Wings". It's one of many classic bagpipe tunes and is part of Mass Bands Set 1. Sets comprise multiple songs played together and are the same all over the world. This allows any pipe band to play with any other pipe band, without having met and practiced together before. This is useful for Massed Band events when many pipe bands gather to perform together.
@@backpackingbooky thank you. Just started the pipes two days ago. Also quick question why does my high a sound really airy and soft.
@@LiamFigureido nice! Welcome to Piping. I am in my first few years so I still have a long way to go but it's an amazing instrument and worth the challenge. As for your high A, it's difficult to know without hearing it but I would say it's over/under pressure or the reed is still too new or needs adjustment. It takes a while for reeds to get "broken in". That high A has a very narrow window for sounding correct so it takes some work to get it there.
@@backpackingbooky Thanks again!! I’ve been having a lot of fun but also I’m experiencing a lot of trouble when playing. When I do grace notes the sound coming from the reed completely cuts out and sometimes it’s hard to keep one note going. Got any tips?
@@LiamFigureido keep at it. It sounds like a pressure issue. It takes a while to get used to playing and the reeds are very sensitive to pressure change. Let your arm do the playing, not your lungs. Keep arm pressure going at all times, even when inflating, just adjust the pressure as needed. It'll get better and better as you go. I would also highly recommend checking out the Matt Willis Bagpiper channel here on TH-cam. @MattWillisBagpiper He has an excellent instructional series and does a great job of helping you get started.
Hello Bryce, this is Mike Kelly. I had your videos pop up on my feed. I have been enjoying watching your videos. You and I have many hobbies in common. I came across W9NVY several months ago on one of the local repeaters. I have yet to finish the Tecumseh trail from the Yellowwood dam to Panther Creek. I have been working on my gear and watching hiking vids. Maybe we will cross paths. 73 KD9MYJ
@@pastormikespage Hey! Thanks for reaching out. Sounds like we do have a lot in common. We should definitely reconnect. If you enjoy POTA we can arrange a hike, and get W9NVY to join us.
@@backpackingbooky I would enjoy that. I am still a technician but I blew the dust off of my General manual since watching your videos. Let me know when you are going and I will see what I can do. Thanks
Rooftops are refreshing!
Wow that’s so cool that you made a contact to a guy in France. I can’t wait to ace my test after a long time of studying. I plan on studying for a month and then take the test
Yeah! The guy in France is Larry and we've picked him up quite a few times now. He's awesome at hunting POTA. Good luck with your test! Jump on hamstudy.org, if you haven't already, and go through the study mode. If you're getting better than 90% aptitude I'd say go ahead and take your test. Looking forward to you getting on the air!
I’m so excited for the Yaesu ftx 1f to come out. I’m already starting to save up for. It’s gonna take 10 months so I’ll have next summer for sure and I’m gonna start studying for my radio license. For the Yaesu ftx 1f would a small 9Amp battery be good?
The FTX 1F does look like it'll be a nice rig for POTA/SOTA. It does come with an internal battery supply which should be sufficient for most QRP work. If you want to run FT8 for a long time, adding an external battery may be a good call and I think a 9 amp/hr battery should be plenty sufficient. That's what I run my G90 on and it does 20w perfectly and I've never run out of battery. Good luck on your license! Be sure to check out hamstudy.org for your studying and testing needs. It is an excellent resource.
Nice Video 👍👍👍 greetings DO2MHV, 73
Many thanks!
That was a pretty impressive QSO, Bryce. Radio never ceases to amaze and intrigue me.
KD6CFE was here. 73`s
Wow, Bryce, your videos make me feel like I’m right there with you in the woods. Thanks for being awesome! 73, Joe/W9NVY
Thanks for actually being there in the woods!
Congrats on the PackTenna!
Thanks! I actually used your video for reference while I was out doing POTA last weekend. I was trying to figure out all the ways it can be set up and your vid helped a lot! This was just a quick "get it in the air", I've done a full POTA with it now and it's amazing. Vid will be posted tomorrow.
Guerilla Hotel HAM haahah!! You guys look like you're staking out the Watergate 🤣😂
Great job on the activation and video! This is the first video of yours I've seen but I subscribed and I'll definitely be checking out more. Keep up the great work!
@@BackcountryGearShed thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Glad you were able to make it to the Huntsville Hamfest. Hope you come back again. K5RY
@@tomalexander6431 thanks! I'll be back for sure.
Good success with your battery?? w9jun
@@DonPorter-i9u absolutely. The Bioenno battery is great. I've never run out of power with it. Even during long activations.
You should have tried the Signature 12 - or even 18 LOL!

St Louis ghetto to the west
Pretty neat historical buildings though! And we passed the City Museum on the way, what a cool place! I want to return to give that place a proper visit.
Might check and see if you guys have a specific freq for activations in your area. For example in PHX where I live we have a specific freq on 2m for activations etc.
@@Deathloec Good tip! I will look into it. I've just been using the national calling frequency.
13:30: <deep breathing, uphill> at least there’s a nice breeze. The little things make life all the sweeter, indeed. You go!!
I had a tough day activating a park Sunday, first time ever had issues with a EFHW getting bad reports of RF. Eventually stopped at 26 QSO’s and took down antenna feeling the coil part of it which was extremely warm, antenna failure but park activated. Sometimes we all have problems.. thanks for the video. 73
Thanks for sharing! It's all part of the experience. Gotta have the hard times to appreciate the good.
It may look like the summit but sometimes it’s not the actual summit. SOTA goat will verify you’re on the actual summit and within activation zone. 73 de N1YLO
Thanks for the tip! I did verify before I started calling. Gettin' in the zone!
Congrats! SOTA is addictive :) Winter activations are great, no bugs, less greenery, better propagation as well in some cases. Looking forward to chasing you someday. 73 de N4AAJ
Thanks! I agree. I prefer to hike and do things outdoors in the winter, so much better. Accept maybe camping, it's nice to have more daylight for that.
Don't feel bad about being in the wrong mode, we've all done things like that!
Haha. It was more funny than anything. Watching all the footage of the struggle was pretty great. Glad I got it done though!
Cool adventure. New follower here. Well done. Crow
Thanks! I appreciate you following along!
Love my Reliance Bugout mini EFHW

Those Reliance antennas are great.
Lovely adventure man, this was enjoyable presentation!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Congrats on a solid trip. Hopefully you learned alot for your big hike next year. Great job!
Thanks! I am continuing to learn and probably will still be learning when I start the AT lol. Every trip is different.
LMAO! "It's not like I prepared a lobster!"
Haha! Yeah I'm a smart ass...
Looks like a great workup to the AT!
Yeah! There will be plenty more training hikes but it's definitely a big step.

That reliance is a really good antenna! I've got the Bugout mini model, it's what we used for Pink's first SOTA.
Neat! I just used it for the first time this morning and it worked really well!
Lovely upload man, nicely put together!
