Hello! Welcome to my channel! I'm a Northern English mechanical engineer & this channel includes stuff that I enjoy or find interesting from Paraffin equipment, various machinery & engineering to working on my trusty 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L & making/refurbishing things in my workshop.
I have 20+ years of experience & am qualified in various engineering disciplines from petrol & diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, hydrostatics & DC electrical systems to welding, fabrication, precision engineering & forge work. I love designing & building various machines, parts & systems from scratch as well as refurbishing vintage machinery.
If you'd like to see the escapades I have on my hand built boat "Nessie" as well as the engineering involved in it or fancy coming along for some traditional Coarse, Fly & Sea Angling, please check out my other new channels! Also, please feel free to follow me on X/Twitter!

Myford ML10 Lathe restoration
I hope you enjoy this video of the restoration that I've recently undertaken on an early model Myford ML10 lathe that I had been given by a friend. It's previous owner had sadly passed away so I really wanted to get the lathe as close to its former glory as I possibly could. Hopefully he would have been happy with the restoration. All being well, it'll find many more years of use in my workshop.

Aladdin BF3912-K Paraffin Heater

Please excuse the typo in the vid! I meant "Barely any smell" .. not "Barley" 😂. Unboxing and first light of a brand new Aladdin Series 39 "Blue Flame" Paraffin heater imported from Japan! I'm really very impressed with this heater, I have a collection of Aladdin heaters and it's every bit as good (if not better) as the old ones and much more aesthetically pleasing and sleek in my opinion. This looks like a kerosene heater!!
Nice work! I love my ml10 and prefer using it when I can over my Super 7! Easy to use and easy to keep clean.
And how much does it cost?
How big of a room can it heat? Would it be enough for 14x20 x 7 feet high? What temperature in the room can it achieve? Thank you
My granny even had a paraffin oven.made the best apple pies ever.and no you couldn't taste the paraffin on the food but you could certainly smell it inher kitchen.happy days.
Awesome little lathes, I use mine daily.
This is the first ML10 I've used & It's performance has been very impressive up to now, it's just so nice to use too! Very happy with it 😃👌
Incredible work! Worked on a Myford ML10 when I was in college, great lil machine 😀
Thanks ever so much 😊!
Come on Johnny, spill, where did you import it from please? I8m been looking at old ones for my she’d, but the idea of a new one is more interesting after watching your vid, thanks 🙏🏻
I used a company called Riverside Works Japan on eBay, they were great to deal with, just be aware of the Import cost, you have to sort this out separately 👍. It's a great heater, I'm really happy with it 👌.
@@jonnybonks Thank you.
I would say, lovingly restored. Nice. Served my time on a Myford.
Thank you 😊! They're great lathes 😃👍
Would this work with one of those heat fans?
I suspect it would, my other heaters do however didn't want to try with this one in case of damage to the enamel top.
A most useful video! I happen to own a Myford lathe similar to yours, which is in need of restoration. It has been standing idle for many years due to my work situation, but now I'm retired and have more time. I also need to restrap the motor for 230 volts since I have no access to 400 volts where I live.
Thank you, I'm so pleased you found it useful! They're great little lathes and Myford were very helpful too 👍
Looks like the "transporter", from Star Trek.
@@AliPez 😂👍
Very nice work. Well done.
Thank you! That's very kind 😊.
Gorgeous.
Thank you! 😊
hi great work...can you tell me the dimensions of the shaft bearings?
Thank you! The spindle on the early ML10's runs directly in the casting on an oil film, so there are no separate bearings so to speak. Would you like the spindle dimensions? If so, I'll check my notes for you, I can't remember off the top of my head 👍
Amazing, looks like new well done. What's next ?
Thank you! We shall see 😃🤞👍
That heater looks great! i have a Toyotomi one purchased from Amazon Spain but the Aladdin heater design look very retro. I saw the seller's page earlier. Did you have to pay any customs duty since it is coming from Japan?
@@K1ngcasimir I'm very impressed with it up to now. Yes, I had to pay Import duty & taxes 👍
@jonnybonks It’s definitely an expensive purchase, especially with the added custom duty charges, but I can understand the appeal of its functionality and aesthetics. I’ve been exploring alternatives like Amazon Japan or using a Rakuten proxy to see if there are any cost savings, but it’s hard to get a clear idea since shipping costs would also incur additional custom duties. I bought my Toyotomi KS-53 (or KS-67H, the Japanese model number) from Amazon Spain, and it ended up costing around £250, including shipping and customs. It functions very similarly to the Aladdin in terms of the convection-style heating but has a more modern look. That said, I really like the design of the Aladdin. It is a shame that Aladdin doesn't sell in the UK since the brand was originally a British brand after all. Thanks for the video to demo this heater!
The plastic keeps the wick from completely drying out? I doubt it I just think it's for protection almost all WIC are dry I've never seen a wet one coming from the store
@@thethiefonthecross9092 quite possibly, however this is what the instructions stated. Being a blue flame heater, it may have been tested once manufactured to ensure proper. gallery alignment. There are clear, hand scribed markings on the burner to ensure correct orientation so this is my guess.
@jonnybonks well if the instructions said it then I guess so. I bought a little stove that is similar WIC design it came dry and I also I bought some extra wicks for my stove and they came dry figured it was the same as a heater.
Where can buy one.
I used a company called Riverside Works Japan 👍
@@jonnybonkscan you get wicks in uk for them and of do what type model number
How long will a tank last?
@@briangreen256 around 15 to 16 hours on 4.1l fill depending on the height of the flame.
@jonnybonks OK. That is around the same run time as my heater. When I first saw these blue flame heaters,I thought they ran on propane lol
How did you manage to pour that kerosene without pouring it all over you??? And the floor, and heater, etc...
😂 lots of practice, the funnel is a must though 👍
How much is it? How can I get one?
I used a company called Riverside Works Japan 👍
Hi are you using it inside all the time ive been messing around with lots of different ways to heat cheaper does it need vented atol
Yes, it heats my house. I always keep a couple of windows cracked open and a couple of CO monitors just to be safe but I've never had an issue and I've been using various paraffin heaters & lamps for years. Correct maintenance, wick adjustment etc. is crucial though 👍.
@jonnybonks thankyou I'll be looking into getting 1 soon do you have a link to the 1 you got or simaler I've been working with a Carlor gas recently I keep meaning to get a co2 monitor
@@jonathanhamilton2437 I used a seller on eBay called Riverside Works, they were very helpful but be aware of the Import costs. There are other models available in this country which work very well, from a company called "dry it out limited", they're also great to deal with 👍
@@jonnybonks thankyou will look into all
My dad had one in the 60s and 70s to keep the frost off his tomato plants in his greenhouse. Lovely memories ❤
Can you reach Iraq?
I'm not sure. It'd probably be best to ask them, I used a company called Riverside Works Japan.
I like that ❤❤❤
Hi, thanks for the helpful video, can you give us the purchase site and do they have global shipping?
@@shanashelbaghdadshba6446 thanks! It was a company called Riverside Works Japan on eBay, it'd probably be best to get in touch with them to discuss postage.
I worked for Aladdin at Greenford in the late 1960's. I was working in their new electronics division but the heaters were made in the next building. TBH the new version looks better made and safer than the originals.
@@alanh7495 yes, I would definitely agree 😃👍
Do you think that your heater is too close to that back wall? I used to sell kerosene heaters in my store here in the USA. We always recommended at least three feet from any combustable wall.
Thanks, it's usually kept a good couple of feet away and the wall stays cool. If I remember correctly the manual for this heater stated 500mm. To be honest, the protective cage around the chimney doesn't really get hot either, most of the heat comes straight out of the top of the chimney 👍
I was brought up in the 50’s and 60’s as my mum and dad had one, ( Aladdin, tall, slim and black). loved the smell and lovely and warm, only other heat was the coal fire, no carbon monoxide sensors, no problems and screw the environment, thanks for sharing, 👍😊
Now paraffin is so expensive it's dearer than French wine!
Are they still making these?
Yes, this one was brand new 👍
I have a paraffin heater in my greenhouse, it has two chimneys (burners) though I only need one running usually
So expensive to operate in my area. N gas is much cheaper....and NO smell.
فعلا راقيه جدا علاء الدين
كيف يمكن الحصول على هذا المنتج الرائع في العراق ؟؟
I'm not sure to be honest. It'd probably be best to ask them, I used a company called Riverside Works Japan.
wow ,,, its like stepping back 55 years ,,,,
I like that system; the problem is that nowadays, you can't find kerosene in gas stations. It will be cheaper with the gas bills. Run that ALADDIN heater for 15 or 16 hours It will save a lot of money on my home gas bill. I like the idea of having one of those things in my home. Thanks for the video, have a nice holiday. Take care
Thank you, you too!
Pakistan mein price kitni hai
Sorry, I'm not sure how much it would be.
Where can this be bought in the USA?
I'm not sure to be honest, I used a company called Riverside Works Japan. They have a shop on eBay too, I'm not sure if they ship to the US but it's definitely worth asking 😃👍
Kerosene is expensive over 4.00 per gallon
@@psmh4 wow, I wish it was that price here in the UK, it's more than twice that cost now 😮💨. It does out much cheaper than electric heating though, but not quite as cheap as domestic gas 👍
😄😄😄
HAD a kerosene heater worked good but was highly concerned about carbon monoxide, and was right ,so got rid of it ,BUT it worked good😊
I must admit I have a couple of CO monitors to be safe, I also keep a couple of windows cracked open. Luckily, if they burn correctly they shouldn't produce any CO🤞
You could see the ‘flame’ was blue = clean burn/safe ✅
does it produce black soot?
None whatsoever, so long as the height of the wick is set correctly 👍
What a beautiful heater I need to find if I can get one here in the United States
Was that a fart at around 2:00 ? 🤣

Jet fuel works great too - if you can find any.
No, so many nasty additives you’ll give yourself cancer for sure.
Looking nice. Purpose for wood or metalwork?
Thanks! It's for metalwork 👍
Yes my uncle randy has one
Handsome heater.
Absolutely gorgeous. I hope to find one someday.
No offense but the fact that you claim that Google says that paraffin is the same thing as kerosene just indicates that either Google is wrong or you are intellectually lazy and didn't bother looking it up. Paraffin is wax, plain and simple.
@AlfredeBlome-df3sg 🤔??? I'm afraid you're incorrect. In the UK, the liquid fuel C1 Kerosene (or K1 Kerosene in the US) is called Paraffin. You can also have petroleum based Paraffin wax which is different, this is used to make candles etc.
When people start with "no offence" it does not mean you have the right to be offensive.
