Manga is an art form that provides some of the most diverse and expressive pieces of art that uniquely stands out from any other industry. The way that panels are formed and designed can help to shape a story in a very significant way- for good or bad. These panels can draw you in and become more invested than you thought possible, or make your reading experience less enjoyable and take you out of the moment.
What manga can give us is a particularly focused way of seeing emotions, thoughts and perspectives of characters from all backgrounds, and this channel is dedicated to exploring what makes or breaks a panel, what good aspects of character design are, and how you can learn to enjoy manga on a deeper level, or learning how to improve your own art and design.

What Makes Good Manga? The Tip of the Iceberg | Panel Flow
I think the manga is so unconcerned with the explanation of the world because its supposed to be foreign. the characters too, we never get any sort of inner monologue from number 5 without it correlating or interacting with another character because were not viewing this from his perspective, and the explanation for the fauna and flora is passive but still applied, most of it is from papa, who states that hes made almost all of the hybrid animals we see out of pure boredom. the lows you talk about arent what id call lows, theyre just not as heavy in depth as they typically would be, the mystery is one of the best aspects of the story. and the pacing is mysterious and fast because (i feel) its trying to show how rapidly the peace corps (not just the rainbow council) falls after No. 5s leave. If we understood every aspect of the story and its world then it wouldnt be nearly as interesting, if answers were provided for every part of the map that you talked about then it wouldnt have caught your same attention, were not interested in the mundane because were fully familiar with the mundane, the same can be said for the media we consume. I like the care you take to praise the series and Matsumotos work, along with how you actively avoid degrading the work just because it doesnt suit your specific wants in a series.
@@Evbot1337 I appreciate the very well written comment! Thank you! Glad you liked it.
@@PanelFlow it's a great video, and I think the skill to give your opinion without degrading the work or it's fans is underappreciated
I am starting this manga right now. I will be back to give my opinion. One piece is my favorite animanga among the 500 i have watched/read and a "friend" of mine calls it trash and mid. For me, its the greatest story of all time. For him, Ping Pong is the greatest anime out there. I don't think i will have the same opinion as him, but if Oda likes it, it must be good!
Nice! I read the manga for this video, I didn't watch anything from the anime, so I'm on the opposite side. But yea, I have said for years that I think OP is the greatest work of fiction ever. In one sentence it's because no story has made me feel a greater range of emotions (joy, sadness, excitement, suprise, etc.). There are very few people I know who are anti- one piece who have actually watched it/read it. I think the new studio WIT series will do wonders to fight against the 'it's too long' narrative.
@@PanelFlow I feel the same way. Many people need to stop being jealous about one piece, it's so sad.
man ping pong is a blast
agreed! I loved it when I read it.
Why are you only comparing critically acclaimed manga that made it past the filters shonen jump? This just feels like your own personal dislike of certain similarities
I understand where you're coming from, but that's not my intention. Didn't mean for it to come off that way. Basically since this was one of my earliest videos, I was like "Ok find big names that people know so you can compare/contrast them", and I think I relied on that a little too heavy in this video in retrospect. I think I would have handled it differently if I had made something similarly now, with maybe one or at max two examples like that. Just what I thought was the best way to convey the message at the time, nothing more. It's also funny to see series that I mentioned in this video & criticized that have spun into something different (Kaiju No. 8), so goes to show that it can start similarly and go in very different directions.
@PanelFlow i think you should try and look at amateur manga/comics that didn't make it. Like that, you have a more rounded understanding. Popular manga usually have less diversity than amateur stuff, simply because these works have to check much more boxes than amateur stuff. There are many things you take for granted when looking at popular manga, and many oddities you simply accept. Reading amateur stuff will give you a more clear lense. But its nice you actually responded sincerely instead of defensively like most creators. Its a good trait to have as a critic. Also you only need 1 or 2 big names to compare and contrast. Youre talking about hooking the viewer and generating interest. That's the perfect test to show a promising unknown manga and watch it work its magic.
@@kenonerboy I appreciate that, I try to take constructive criticism as much as I can and work on it. There have definitely been other comments where I'm like "nah that isn't coming from a place of genuine critique" that I choose not to respond to, but yours was different, so it goes the other way as well. I'll look into your suggestion and see if it works. I'm finally getting off of my ass and making another video after this way too long hiatus, so I'm hoping to get into the swing of things again here soon. I'm just trying to make my editing not look like a slideshow/like shit
@PanelFlow editing is less important than you think. Good ideas and content is where its at. Youre not peddling mrbeast shlop, but actual thoughtful stuff
@@kenonerboy lol thanks. Yea, it's more on a personal level of wanting to get better versus anything artistic. I obviously want the base of anything I put out to be good from an idea/content standpoint, but I just think editing can add that cherry on top.
Honestly, i loved what you were saying, but couldn't make it past 5 minutes because of the background music, it was so distracting
@@ANIMEJESUS8 sorry to hear that!
And since you posted that: some were indeed announced. A new death note by the Stranger things guys, attack on Titan has been on development hell, and so forth. Curious to see what else is coming
I’m glad Oda knows who the real GOAT is
I've just started paying and working closely back and forth with an artist, sending over my crap drawings, crude paneling, and rough sketches of what I think things should look like, along with my notes and writings on my narrative. I'm having it done right to left as I want it translated to Japanese to try and reach an audience over there as well. How would I even go about reaching Japan?
@@keepingmypeace7438 I mean you’re asking a guy who only has a little over 2k subs. I’m not exactly popping in Japan haha. In terms of getting in contact with Japan, I’d start with some socials (maybe as a Japanese subreddit). Otherwise you might have closer connections. If you live in/near a city that has a university, there might be a Japanese department where grad students/professors that offer a service like that.

Thank for presenting this manga! I heard about it form some other youtuber, but I forget the title. Now, thanks to you I know the title and gonna pick it up. From the way you describe, it reminds me of "Hikaru no go" and "Bakuman", especially how rivals push each other to reach the greater hight.

What I find funny is that people will see this as a bad thing, but the exact same thing happens in the anime industry. We get so many lackluster anime adaptation, but no one really cares, but with live action if it is mediocre everyone loses their minds. And it’s not like comic book adaptations aren’t well received either, so I don’t see live action One Piece as this exception like others have. Even Oldboy which was based on a manga is considered one of the best films of the 2000s. Honestly, I wish Hollywood would also make adaptations of graphic novels that don’t necessarily have to be super hero comics. But they’ll just do manga adaptations instead which is kinda sad.
I'm making my first manga and your channel has been a big help. I hope you make more videos on page composition!
Definitely in the playbook. I want to wrap up the comic competition first, then I have another about some more settings/themes, after that I have one gigantic video I’ve been working on in between everything, but down the road I could see more videos about that subject
Not gonna be able to finish by dec 1st 😕

You said no published authors, would this apply to "professional artists?", not published but does paid art ?
No problem with professional artists. I’m talking about people who have been successful comic/manga artists themselves and have been published. If you, for example, we’re a professional painter then that wouldn’t conflict. But if you were the artist for a published comic/manga, then that would be a no go. That is more of my point.
