when do you know resin has burned through and when to clean? is it when it all turns black???

My resin melts through into the candle and there's no fragrance. How do you get the resin not to melt all the way and to burn instead?
put tinfoil under the resin
Never had that problem and I use a descent amount of frankincense and myrrh each time
