Love the video except that loud clicking sound. It was like hearing a smoke alarm alert when it has a dead battery in the background, while someone is eating chips against a probe microphone.
I'd love to see a comprehensive tutorial like this on using the project management system, where the team lead AI automatically starts new projects, handles the release and stuff like that. I usually start with 4 founders, 1 who is speced into each role and leads a team doing those tasks. But, i still don't quite understand how that system really works.
Great suggestion! Project management is definitely one of the most confusing parts of software inc, I will try to make a guide on it in the future.

Just my few cents but when I hire support I like to filter for Lead as secondary. If you hover over the stars you'll see that 1 star in Multitasking (Lead) improves support. Since support teams are usually generic and assigned to multiple products that's nearly always beneficial. For example at 2:07 Lynette Chavez was an excellent choice in my opinion. You're already filtering on modest and low salaries, so the salary difference is only marginal. 2 stars in support means she could handle 2 tickets at once, so if you take that into account as well she's actually more effective, cheaper, and uses less desk space than two 1-star employees would. Another marginal minmax thing I like to do is to filter for Super Focus on my accountants. They're always just optimising taxes; Filing tax reports doesn't count as a separate task. So it's easy and consistent optimisation for your accounting team. :)

Can you make a tutorial for office building? I can never seem to get an office where people are happy they always say "there is nothing to do"
Making a guide on building/designing office building is on my list of future guides, although the “there is nothing to do” complaint is a result of the employee not being assigned a task (or not being assigned a task they have the skill to do). Generally the way to fix this is either to have multiple projects at different stages going or, hire/train employees to be skilled in multiple areas, such as having a designer who also has some skill in programming.
Found your account randomly, I love playing sofware inc myself. And instead of starting the series where i found a vid on my feed i was like gonna start from episode 1 and it isn´t dissapointing. Keep it up and can´t wait to see the others!

Good tips Sir, a few new to me! I just came back to the game after ~2years and it changed a lot. Back then my play way always 1. boosting reputation asap to the max with contract work, 2. go all in into digital distribution, which provided a good and safe early income. This is not possible anymore since Beta1.3 I think. Is there a new strategy for early digital distribution?
I think it's been modified to be a bit more realistic. Unfortunately, there is no early method for digital distribution because it's not where the money is until later in history.
I agree, in my experience digital distribution doesn't become very profitable until sometime around 1990s-2000s
After playing around a little with 1.7, I think it is way easier now to get early money. I just hire 3 Mid-tier accountants ASAP and go for a loan application ~5mil. With that I have massive cash at hand even in Feb 1980 and can do whatever I want :)

It might be worth noting that assigning a lead designer to a contract does have one benefit. You can use it to find out what your designer's creativity score is, and it won't hurt the contract even if it is low. So, you can use contracts to figure out who your lead designers should be for your own software. Just be careful about the timing. If you drain their inspiration and then assign them to your own projects, those projects will suffer when they run out. [EDIT: So, I've discovered that there is a second downside to doing this in the early game. Lead designers ask for bigger raises. It's probably better to wait until you have a decent cash flow before using this trick.]

It feels like there’s a million guides on starting out but hardly any on what to do once you’ve actually got some money in the bank and want to start expanding.

On Founder - Fast Learner/Big Brain with two mild negative traits (Neat/Walker) is better, make Design the primary and then they will be the primo-designer for the life of the game. Fast Friends is not good, because the Founder is going to outlast all other employees, and when those employees leave/die then all of that employees friends, and those friends' friends take a morale hit for 3-12 months. Focused is also not great on any Founder because of the need for them to wear many hats early game. OS or Games are the "maximizing value" Visionary specializations. Games, because they can be ported to any OS and OS because they have the largest potential user pool, and then making products for your OS and ONLY for your OS makes the OS "chain" more desirable the longer into the game. (More products using the OS, the more of the potential user pool one gets) Project Management (Automation under leader) is not a late game thing at all, in fact it should be at about one's third goal (release own product, get own building, start a Project) Even with an OS start it is rare to not have PM set-up and for the second version of that OS by 1985, (late 85 early 86 if one wants 3D and Networking base ability in the OS) AV in 1980 is worthless, it doesn't actually have a "teeth" until Networking in 1985. OS (longest to develop, but best long term move) or Games tend to be the best money-makers. The Editors/Tools are actually better to make in-house to build future products on with the proprietary tools, especially if one has an OS, but to do so, need the money to keep afloat. Four Founder starts are "easy mode", Single Founder start is "slow mode" both for starting off, since it is already slow mode, having skill cap is just another hit to early money/rep gain, but since one wants the Founder to become a Leader ASAP and contribute as little as possible to any single area of a project, it is still worth it, theire is a HUGE difference in the amount of sales from software with a Visionary versus an Innovative, much less a "Normal", as in $2-3 million from a "Normal OS release versus $12-15 million from a Visionary release.. Having a Founding Partner with good Accounting will take care of both "tax issues" early game as well as getting real loans in game so that the team can focus on development of own software instead of doing contracts or deals. The Bank Loan from in-game is far better than the "initial loan" one can get in game setup.

One thing that I think is worth mentioning is that game assets never have bugs to fix. Which makes a bit of sense, you're making art, not code.

Nice video! Could you explain why one not want to boost the creativity of the founder to the maximum? It seems such a logical thing to do ^^
Sure, when you chose to boost the creativity of a founder it will cap their base skill, in which base skill effects the speed characters work. So if you choose visionary it caps it at about 30%, and you won’t be able to increase it higher than that as you play the game. You can have an enjoyable experience either way, but in my personal experience, I’ve find the higher base skill to be more important than the creativity when you only have one founder.

How do market satisfaction or market analysis works? Do we have to follow they graph? is wasted interest bad? would not people like more features?
The market analysis graph tells you how much each feature is saturated in the market, so prioritizing features that are less saturated will add more interest in your software than other features. If you hit analyze, then in the market satisfaction faction chart, the lines will tell you the balance of feature to hit the 100% interest with minimal amount of features. Each time you select a feature it will fill up the chat and ideally you fill the chart up to the lines, but it’s unlikely you’ll perfectly fill it up, but when your close, if you hit auto balance you’ll probably get 100% interest. You don’t have to follow the graph, I often don’t look market analysis graph. But by looking at it you might be able to design your software with minimal amount of features. Wasted interest isn’t necessarily bad, and once you’ve hit the 100% expected interest, you are bound to have some. Wasted interest is intended show that any customer who might consider buying your software type has already been satisfied enough to buy your software and by adding extra features your not going to attract any new customers. Wasted interest doesn’t have any negative effect on the quality or sales of a software, but if you have a really high wasted interested then it means you have extra features than aren’t necessary.

What does frameworks do?
Frameworks are used to speed up development for a software. You spend extra development time making a framework for yourself or you can use ones made by other companies in which they take cut of your software’s profit
which part of the development? iteration? pros and cons for using frameworks? when should i start building my own frameworks ?@@StyledCorn if i am to use a framework should i always choose the latest framework?
It effect both the design and alpha phase development speed. For iterations I always recommend initially doing 3 iterations in the design phase and the reiterating halfway through the alpha phase, if you want more info on iterations, tip #7 on my 10 tips video covers the subject. Pros: Gives you a speed boost, Cons: Either you have to pay a royalty or spend a lot of extra development time to make one. Personally I've never seen much benefit out of building my own framework, it takes a lot of extra time, and by the time you release sequels using your previous framework, the framework you made may be considered outdated. I generally use an existing framework on my first release of a software type, then for every following sequel I opt not to use a framework (as you also get a development speed boost when releasing a sequel). When choosing frameworks, you should absolutely chose the latest framework, if you chose significantly older frameworks, your software will be considered outdated upon release which will negatively effect your sales.
Very interesting series! I've just started getting into the game and it's really fun. You might have caught it by now but maybe take a look at your security people, doesn't look like you're quite getting 3 shifts. I really like the building design, it might be interesting to expand to an adjacent building, if you wanted to go for a campus vibe.
