@CessnaExpert123 Yes, they are still nowadays fully operating....for that I know, there are no connections between UK and Italy or Austria with them, you need to reach Rome or Verona and then continue to Bolzano (it's a wonderful town, with marvellous surroundings!!!).

Certo ce l'hanno solo che le condizioni di volo erano buone, e non c'è stato bisogno di utilizzarlo. Se necessario, sarebbe stato visualizzato nello stesso sistema dove vedevi la rotta, per dirlo in due parole... ;-)

The squawk can be changed according to ATC needs. If you go through many different control centers, not all of them share the same code for you. Different ATC systems will require different code to assign to a particular flight.
