Evaporative cooling is a process in which the phenomenon of evaporation is used as a natural heat absorber. In this process, the sensible heat of the air is absorbed and used as the latent heat necessary for the evaporation of water. The amount of sensible heat absorbed depends on the amount of water that evaporates.
The more water circulates inside water coolers, the more cooling power it has.

Evaporative cooling is a very old process whose origins go back thousands of years in the ancient civilizations of Iran and Egypt. Modern evaporative coolers are based on prototypes made in the 1900s in the United States. Evaporative cooling can be done directly or indirectly and spontaneously or mixed. In direct evaporative cooling, the amount of water in the cooled air increases. In indirect evaporative cooling, evaporation takes place inside a heat exchanger and the amount of moisture in the cooled air does not change. Since the high rate of evaporation increases the relative humidity and may cause discomfort in the environment, the direct evaporative cooling method should be implemented in areas where the relative humidity is low. When the evaporation process is done naturally, the evaporation is done spontaneously. A space can be cooled by spontaneous evaporation if there is a dam of stagnant or flowing water such as a pond or a water fountain. In cases where evaporation is done by mechanical devices, it is mixed evaporation. It is clear that energy is consumed in this type of evaporation, but the amount of energy consumed is much less compared to air conditioning. The basis of the evaporative cooling method is the thermodynamics of water evaporation, or in other words, the change of water state from liquid to vapor.[1]

سرمایش تبخیری فرایندی است که در آن از پدیدهٔ تبخیر به عنوان یک جاذب گرماییِ طبیعی استفاده می‌شود. در این فرایند، گرمای محسوس هوا جذب شده و به عنوان گرمای نهانِ لازم برای تبخیر آب استفاده می‌شود. مقدار گرمای محسوس جذب‌شده به مقدار آبی که تبخیر می‌شود بستگی دارد.
هر چقدر آب در گردش داخل کولرهای آبی بیشتر باشد قدرت خنک‌کنندگی آن هم بیشتر می‌شود.

سرمایش تبخیری یک فرایند بسیار قدیمی است که منشأ آن به هزاران سال قبل، در تمدن‌های باستانی ایران و مصر بازمی‌گردد. خنک‌کننده‌های تبخیری نوین بر اساس نمونه‌های اولیه‌ای که در دههٔ ۱۹۰۰ آمریکا ساخته شد تولید می‌شوند. سرمایش تبخیری می‌تواند به صورت مستقیم یا غیر مستقیم و خودبخودی یا مختلط، انجام شود. در سرمایش تبخیری مستقیم، مقدار آب موجود در هوای خنک شده افزایش می‌یابد. در سرمایش تبخیری غیرمستقیم، تبخیر در درون یک مبدل حرارتی انجام می‌شود و مقدار رطوبت موجود در هوای خنک شده، تغییری نمی‌کند. از آنجایی که بالا بودن نرخ تبخیر رطوبت نسبی را افزایش داده و ممکن است موجب عدم آسایش محیط شود روش سرمایش تبخیری مستقیم باید در مناطقی اجرا شود که رطوبت نسبی در آنجا کم باشد. هرگاه فرایند تبخیر به‌طور طبیعی انجام شود تبخیر خودبخودی انجام می‌شود. در صورتی می‌توان یک فضا را با تبخیر خود بخودی خنک نمود که در آن سدی از آب راکد یا در جریان مانند حوضچه یا فوارهٔ آب وجود داشته باشد. در مواردی که تبخیر توسط دستگاه‌های مکانیکی انجام شود تبخیر مختلط است. واضح است که در این نوع تبخیر انرژی مصرف می‌شود، ولی مقدار انرژی مصرفی در مقایسه با تهویهٔ مطبوع بسیار کمتر است. اساس روش سرمایش تبخیری، ترمودینامیک تبخیر آب یا به عبارت دیگر تغییر حالت آب از مایع به بخار است.[۱]
کولرهای آبی نوعی از کولرها هست که برای مناطقی با آب و هوای گرم و خشک استفاده می‌گردد زیرا کولر آبی با ایجاد رطوبت مانع از خشک شدن هوا و ترک خوردن وسایل چوبی و ایجاد الکتریسته ساکن در این مناطق می‌گردد و همچنین به لطافت هوا نیز کمک می‌کند
