Greenhouse check-up After Snow & Ice
มุมมอง 7014 วันที่ผ่านมา
After the harsh winter frost and cold damage, I'm inspecting the greenhouse's to assess plant survival. The winter garden care has been crucial this season, with some plants needing extra frost protection to make it through. During this brief garden tour, we discover that while the fuchsia care has paid off with the cuttings showing resilience, the busy lizzies unfortunately didn't survive the ...

I don't seem to be very successful with Dahlias as my soil is heavy clay and gets water logged. I really like them though especially The Bishop's varieties. When I sowed the seeds Bishop's children, I couldn't believe that they grew and formed tubers.
Hopefully The dahlias that I planted from seed in the spring and dug up survive over the winter in the greenhouse.
It's always a nice surprise when our seeds germinate. Your Salvia Hot Lips is looking great.
Surprised how well the salvia is still doing & its good to get some seedling going for next year.
Your plants look very happy. Hasn't that tomato plant done well to produce more flowers? I wonder if it will bear some fruits for you.
Hopefully the plants are happy enough to survive the winter & I was surprised with the tomatoes plant, just leaving it do what it wants for the moment.
Great idea. What zone are you in?
I'm in zone 8, last year we only had a few flurry's of snow but a lot of cold frosty nights some winters we have a lot heavier snow, so best to be prepared hopefully the fleece does its job.
You grow all the plants that I love. Unfortunately the few Hollyhocks that I've got always seem to get rust on the leaves. Allen and Lars from The Perennial Garden channel have said it could be that the air isn't able to circulate. I must admit, I do tend to cram my plants in to save on weeding. Good on you for sowing seeds now. I never seem to have much success with Autumn sowings.
My Hollyhocks do get rust on them but I spray them to try to keep it under control, I do try to sow some seeds in Autumn but then also again in spring so they don't all flower at once.
Sweet peas are lovely aren't they? There's a particular favourite of mine because of the fragrance called Gwendoline but I usually sow an assortment too. The perennial ones don't have a smell but are good for colour. I've just been in my garden for a few hours and found a single bloom hanging on amongst some cosmos. Surprised to see it at this time of the year. My sweet peas weren't very good this year. I'm blaming the weather again!
I didn't have many sweet pea flowers because of the slugs during the spring. I'll be more prepared this time around if they decide to come again, Although most of the flowering is done for the year its nice to see a few still going.
Thank you for your wonderful sharing, John likes you and subscribes to your channel❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍
I've grown the Sphaerocephalon before and Tete a Tete are my favourite Daffodils. I like all the miniature varieties. Bluebells remind me of my home town Helston in Cornwall. On 7th May the shops get decorated with them then the next day, people dance through the streets and some of the shops and houses. It's a tradition that goes back years and is supposed to celebrate the banishing of Winter and the arrival of Spring.
This is my first year growing bulbs and I'm looking forward to them flowering, The tradition with the bluebells sounds interesting its amazing how some of these things keep going for years. When I was younger I used to love walking though bluebell woods with my Gran.
I really like Lavatera and am going to get some seeds for sowing next year. I lost my Barnsley Baby a couple of years ago because I left it outside in the winter. A different sort seems to come back every year for me and it did really well this year. I like your tubs that the Alstromeria are in.
This is my first year with my Barnsley Baby so I I'm hoping it will survive the winter as its in the greenhouse. My Hexagonal pots I have had for a few years now & got them from amazon they wasn't that expensive from what I remember.
You've done well to get so much growing with the weather that we've had this year. I've heard that if you put a banana next to your green tomatoes it helps them to ripen. I've not tried this myself though.
Thank you it has been difficult this year with the strange weather & the slug attack, Hopefully its better next year for the both of us. Iv never heard of that before my tomatoes are ripening up well in the bowl at the moment, I'll try to remember that next time I have some green tomatoes to ripen.
👍👍👍
👍👍👍
Hope they take for you.
Thank you It'll be nice if even just a few grow.
Good luck with your rose propagation mission 😊
Thank you hopefully all goes well.
I used to be so cautious when trimming my roses but they really do like to be pruned. What colour is your rose and do you know its name? I'm sure that you've had some lovely blooms this year and is probably in your older videos. I'll have to take a look.
I don't know the name as it was here when we moved in, I have a video here which shows them off a little better: th-cam.com/video/8hep0I2qkDw/w-d-xo.html . It doesn't have a lot of fragrance but it does flower well.
@@RayfieldsGarden Thanks for the link. The rose is a lovely colour.
Great price ❤ excited to see them bloom.
Your plants are going to be nice and cosy away from Jack Frost. When my nephew was small he liked opening the fridge door and my mum told him to close it or he'd let Jack Frost out. Nephew was almost upside down looking in every corner trying to find him. It was so funny.
Hopefully it will keep the plants going over winter & children take things too literally sometimes but it is amusing how they get lost within themselves.
That's a good price for bulbs. I've never done a lasagne planting before. I look forward to seeing yours when the bulbs are in flower. We're having so much rain at the moment so I hope our bulbs don't rot. I'm trying to get as many pots as I can lifted off the ground to see if that helps.
I Picked these up from Thompson & Morgan they regularly have 48 hours offers, Its my first attempt at doing this lasagne planting as well so we'll see how it goes. We've had a lot of rain these last few days as well hopefully it dry's up a little later in the week & hopefully you manage to get everything out of the water.
Hope they germinate for you. I love roses and when we were on holiday this year we went to David Austin's rose place in Shropshire. Really enjoyed it even though it was late in the season. I was worried that the roses would be past their best but there was so much to see. So tempting to want to buy them all on the way out.
Hopefully, it will be interesting to see what grows & what colours they might be as they were just mixed seeds, that sounds like a great place to visit & I would defiantly be tempted to buy a few on the way out.
Not heard of a bat plant before. Will be interesting to see how it grows.
I'd never herd of them before either so I though id give them a try.
You still have some nice colour in your garden. We've had several days in a row of beautiful weather but my goodness, the temperature doesn't half drop in the night making it feel very autumnal. Bet your little plants are glad to be in the greenhouses. It's a shame that rain is forecast for the weekend when a lot of people are off work and want to get in their gardens. Okay for me as I'm retired now but I do remember those days when it was dry and sunny all week then all change for my days off.
I am pleased that everything's holding on so far even with a few frosty nights, its still a few years before retirement for me so I know what you mean about making the most of the time you do get out in the garden. It defiantly does feel like autumn now summer went by so quick.
That looks great and I'm sure that you'll get good use out of it. Did the clips holding the shelves together come with it or were they a separate purchase? They seem like a good idea. Hope you're getting the beautiful weather that we are. Makes up for last week when it seemed to rain non stop.
Hopefully so, it gets the sun earlier in the day so it is a lot warmer than the other one. The clips came with the greenhouse & yes they work well so far its been a lovely day today, warm days cool nights.
Do you know what plants you're going to put in? I sometimes wish I'd bought the larger sizes like you instead of lots of little ones. I had a super greenhouse at my last property which the previous owners left. I really miss it especially on rainy days like today.
I'll be putting in Fuchsia cuttings from indoors hoping they will last over winter & ill use the space to over winter the mixed flower tubs from the patio and then I'll have space for growing seeds next spring. I would one day like to get a full size greenhouse but these will do for now it is nice to have just that little bit more space plus they are not as expensive or difficult to put together as I first thought.
Wallflowers are super little plants aren't they? I bought some from B and Q several years ago and because they self seed, I have them every year. I normally have to dig them up and pot them on as they don't always land where I want them. I bought some others a couple of weeks ago as the ones that self seed are all yellow and I wanted some red ones too.
They are, these have self seeded so I'm not sure which colour they will be hopefully a mix of red & purple but we will see, they originally grew from seeds 4 years ago. That should be a nice contrast having the yellow and red.
You did a good job there. I have a few shrubs that I planted too near the fence when I first got this house. I've had a couple of goes at digging them out but haven't succeeded yet. My soil is heavy clay so perhaps I ought to try again after it's been raining. I've had a few hours in the garden today just deadheading and there was a real nip in the air. I think we've all been waiting for summer to arrive. Hopefully next year will be better for us gardeners.
Thank you, The bushes came up easier than I though they would. It was good to get it done, Having a bit of a move around to get another greenhouse in just got to build it now but they're not too hard to put together. Has been some strange weather this year soon be time to get everything ready for overwintering.
I had no idea that there were so many different sorts of mint. Jim McColl from Beechgrove Garden used to say "Every day is a school day" and it's true. All I know about mint is it's invasive so it's good that you're planting in your tub.
Apparently there are many other varieties but I don't think I need any more. I already have an apple mint & a garden mint in separate larger pots, I haven't put them in the garden as yes they are very invasive, there always seems to be another thing to find/learn about with plants which keeps us busy I suppose.
Hello sister 🔔🔔👍Please accompany me, thank you very much. ❤❤❤
Fame at last! Those are lovely pots and I think you'll enjoy planting your bulbs and seeing them come up next year. They're always a welcome sight after a long winter when there's not much colour around. Have you thought about the bulbs you're going to choose? It is such a wet day today so no gardening for me but it's supposed to clear up later. Everything is looking so bedraggled so I think most of the bedding plants will have to come out. They've not liked the rain or the cooler temperatures. Bit like me really!
Credit where its due, thanks for the inspiration :), I've got some Mixed Bulbs already ordered 109 special offer for £12 have to wait and see what comes be a surprise what colours I get. Its been uncomfortably warm here today but hopefully getting some rain later. Summers almost over already seems to have gone by quick, we'll be putting most of the plants to bed for the winter before you know it.
Oh it looks a great job. It is good you could tape those rips, what kind of tape did you use there? Also your yard set up is really nice.
I used this tape here, Gorilla Waterproof Patch & Seal Tape Clear: Amazon link if this helps: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09PVM71P5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Worked wonders on the repairing the old greenhouse & kept it together until I got the new cover & Thank you.
Good to see that you and your garden survived the storm. Your greenhouse will survive anything now! I just had a few pots blown over which was easy to put right but my brother lives in the country and a tree came down in the nearby lane and has taken down the phone lines so he's not happy as he has no internet and it's not being fixed until sometime this week. I hate these storms and find them quite frightening. It all stems from that storm back in the eighties when Michael Fish got the forecast wrong. I was living in Cornwall and I had tiles coming off the roof and fence panels coming down plus I could see my windows almost bending. One of the shops in town had a huge one smash. It's a nice day today here in Cheshire but the temperature has definitely dropped.
It did get quite bad overnight but at least the greenhouse is still together. Sorry to hear about the tree down by your brothers its surprising how lost we get without internet these days, we're currently dealing with internet problems although we still have access to it. Heard some people did have it quite rough, luckily we haven't had a bad storm like the 80s in a while, it seemed to get a bit cooler here but then soon picked up with the humidity again. Hope you are doing well now & hopefully it continues to stay calmer.
Wonderful flowers! 💚 My support for your new channel. 😊
Thank you for the support.
Lovely flowers! 👍💚
I'd be happy with those carrots. You're right about taking old compost out being harder than putting it in. I was emptying some pots yesterday as the bedding plants were looking tired and I had to get a trowel to get the compost out at the bottom. It was full of roots so I suppose it served it's purpose.
The carrots are still eatable so that's good & yes I guess the compost compacts down a lot what with constant watering and drying back out again, any more and I would of needed a hammer & chisel. I'll be setting up some new Troughs to replace the raised bed at least they will be easier to move around and service without so much compost in them. Do you have any plans for what your going to do with the free space you have now?
@@RayfieldsGarden Yes, the pots will soon be filled with spring bulbs. I really like the miniature daffodils Tete a Tete so they'll be planted late Sept and tulips will go in late Oct. The shops are full of them now and it's hard to choose which ones I'd like as I have to remember they'll all need putting in plus I'm not made of money! I do tend to get carried away spending my money on the garden but an old work colleague used to tell me there's no pockets in shrouds which is very true. My soil is heavy clay and tulips rot so I have to plant them in pots. They are always a welcome sight when the garden is beginning to wake up.
Hopefully your pots will look lovely in the spring, I never think to plant bulbs but maybe this year ill give it a try, sometimes it is hard to choose which plants to focus on & I get not wanting to spend on things that you might not even have the space for, Haven't had to deal with heavy clay soil myself but I imagine that its not easy, good idea to have the bulbs in pots.
Your patio area looks so inviting. I saw some lovely garden furniture today and was very tempted to buy it as it was reduced. Do you make time to just sit in your garden? I'm not very good at that even though I know I should. I always seem to see something that needs doing. I need to relax more!😆
You should treat yourself, especially as you know you'll enjoy it & have a reason to make time to sit in the garden, I love just sitting in the garden even if its only for 5 or 10 minutes with a cup of tea. I am the same with always finding something to do but it is nice when you lose yourself for a little while in the evening just enjoying the flowers and garden wildlife.
👍👍👍
Your new fence looks lovely. Great idea for anchoring your greenhouse.
Thank you, the new fence does make it look a lot tidier, the greenhouse did take a bit of trial and error but we got there in the end, hopefully it gives some others ideas.
I need to motivate myself to clear my patio but unless there's a reason to do it (like having the fence repaired) I keep putting it off even though I know it'll look better when I've done it! You did well not to snap any of your plants.
Yes, didnt have much of a choice with the fence repair, but it does look nice now its all done, mabye just before you put everything away for winter you can have a good sort out?, I only lost a few tomatoes when moving them around so i consider that a win!.
Lovely bit of colour there. I always grow Cosmos each year and I think I'm going to sow some Lavatera when the time is right as it looks so pretty in your garden.
I always grow Cosmos but this is my first year growing Lavatera, thank you I am pleased with how they turned out.
This has to be the wettest year that I've ever known. Some of the plants have loved it though. My reduced Pelargoniums from Morrison's are doing well despite the rain and it looks like yours are too. (Assume those are the ones you rescued.)
I know what you mean about the weather it has been really strange this year, the Pelargoniums (Geraniums) that are in the tub on the patio are the ones that I overwintered from last year. My rescued ones are planted in the back border and are doing well at the moment despite the weather.
Very beautiful flowers❤❤❤
I've had a family of crows visit my bird feeder and one of them was trying to unhook one of the containers. He was quite persistent. Not heard of birds going for spring onions before Hope they leave some for you to enjoy. Your beans are doing well.
It has surprised me what they have been going for this year. My little bird feeder is too small for the bigger ones to get in, not that they haven't tried too though.
Your Salvia is lovely. Thank you for showing us what to do. That was so helpful and I have a much better idea about caring for mine now. It's just a young plant so not very big and I now realise that the woody bit I told you about is just the structure supporting the stems and as it grows that bit will get covered. Thanks again.
Glad it helped out, much easier to do a video on it rather than try to explain over messages hope all goes well with yours.
@@RayfieldsGarden Yes, much easier with a video. Sometimes when I read a manual I wonder what on earth it all means but now there's TH-cam, I can see what I'm supposed to do! Thanks again.
hello, white king is amazing. is it winter hardy in the uk or do we need to overwinter it?
White Kings are not very winter hardy, so its best to protect them from the cold over winter.
@@RayfieldsGarden thank you
Tomorite is good stuff isn't it? Is that a Salvia Hot Lips that I can see? Do you just give it a haircut after flowering as I'm not very successful with mine. I'm not sure if it would re-sprout if I cut down to the woody bit. I know that Lavender won't but not sure about Salvias. I've probably bought three over the years and I always end up with a woody lower part.
Yes it really is, been using it for quite a few years now & yes it Is a Salvia Hot Lips I Prune it after its died down for winter to just above the last shoots and then just a general tidy up though the summer in the same way I did the Fuchsia bush, I will probably do a video on the Hot Lips when they have finished flowering closer to winter.
@@RayfieldsGarden Thank you and the video will be really helpful.
Very cool 😎
Absolutely gorgeous garden 🏡 and I am new friend here and I am just subscribed to your channel
Thank you for watching & subbing, much appreciated.
Your tomatoes are doing so much better than mine. I've got lots of flowers but no fruit. I'm thinking about growing cucumbers next year but I'm a bit confused as I gather you have to have a male and a female plant and I was wondering how you tell the difference. I'd just like to buy a packet of seeds and sow them like I do with my other plants. What variety did you sow please and were they easy? We have some lovely sunshine here today. Hope it's the same for you.
Last year my tomatoes didn't do much of anything but having the greenhouse this year helped out a lot, regarding cucumbers I bought "All Female Fruiting" ones from Thompson & Morgan: www.thompson-morgan.com/p/cucumber-emilie-f1-hybrid-seeds/WKC9395TM , with these you can plant them just like a normal pack of seeds & leave them to it, our weather hasn't been too bad but been getting a little warm during the evenings, Let me know if you have any problems with the Link above.
@@RayfieldsGarden Thanks so much for the info. They sound just what I'm after. I was at a garden centre having lunch the other day and their homegrown cucumber tasted amazing. I would never have believed the difference in taste compared to a shop bought one.
No problem, and I agree the difference between the watered down ones you get from shops is indescribable.
Going to look really colourful when your plants bloom. I lost so many of my seedlings to the slugs and snails this year. Never known a year like it but every one is different. I'm always moaning that it's either too hot or too cold!
Thank you, Hopefully I'll get more than a month or so before the wind & rain come back for winter, I also lost a lot to slugs this year I first tried eggshells to deter them but had to resort to more heavy duty stuff that did work but not after loosing a lot & having to restart not sure what got in to them this year, & yes the weather this year has been all over the place, but best to make the most of what little warmth we have while it lasts.
Oi❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
