The GE C44-9W era begins on the Arizona and California Railroad!
A 4K look at the railroad operations of the Arizona and California Railroad in the new C44-9W era.
Filmed from May of 2022 when “new” GE C44-9W's arrived this is an in depth look GE era of operations on this railroad. This video is oriented starting with EAST bound trains from Parker, then WEST bound trains from Matthie/Castle Hot Springs.
This strategic regional railroad owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc., runs from Matthie, Arizona to Cadiz, California. The Arizona and California (reporting marks ARZC) has trackage rights to Phoenix from Matthie but interchange with BNSF is usually at Castle Hot Springs.
The growing agricultural & industrial operations of western Arizona are rapidly expanding for a world marketplace. Present ARZC operations include full unit grain trains and stack trains for unloading at the Lone Cactus Railroad at Utting, Arizona. (these trains always run with BNSF power)
Train hours of operation vary, but for the most part Monday thru Thursday are eastbound from Parker mid morning (as of January 2025) to Castle Hot Springs, returning to Parker in the evening then a late nite continued trip to Cadiz & back (after sunset, so not in this video, at least for now).
Friday is Parker to Castle Hot Springs and back to Parker ONLY (NO Cadiz run this day).
No trains operate Saturday.
Sunday afternoon is the Parker to Cadiz ARZC train that can run during daylight, but be sure to follow the train across the river to Earp to make sure it actually does run to Cadiz. Sometimes it can sit for hours in Earp before making the trip west!
For a look at Cadiz operations please check out the SD40 ARZC video on this site!
SAFETY NOTE: The line is really not accessible between Milligan and Cadiz... there is NO cell phone service in and the road is absolutely NOT passable to passenger cars despite Waze and GPS phone guidance apps recommending that route. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT SAFE to travel that road unless in a 4 wheel drive JEEP with LARGE sand tires due to many washes having very long tracks of loose sand that are extremely difficult to drive. If you want to see the interchange at Cadiz, wait at Parker until the west bound leaves.. get it going across the bridge at Parker, then you must go up to Needles CA and over I-40 west to the Kelbaker Road exit. Take route 66 west from Kelbaker road to Cadiz past the "road closed" signs and follow to Cadiz Road. Bring lots of water/snacks and a FULL tank of gas from Needles as there are no services other than at Amboy, CA which is about 15 miles west of Cadiz and the Amboy station may be closed do to road closures presently… so.. FULL tank of gas only from Needles (or Barstow) and LOTS of water! You will just beat the train to Cadiz driving this way.. In the winter months the operation is often at night, and during the long days of summer the heat in the Mojave desert is such that it is only recommended if in very good health and a very reliable car. Cadiz is one of those places that NOT many railfans go for very good reasons. Milligan is somewhat accessible from the SOUTH (absolutely do not drive from Cadiz to Milligan from the north!) but it is a good 25 miles from a paved road if your car breaks down so not really recommended unless traveling in a group with more than one car.

All your videos are just beautiful! What a great way to see the country from the comfort of my living room.
Have I lost my mind or have I seen this before? Did you put this up a few years ago, then take it down and put it back up again?
It had to be taken down while negotiating the copyright issues on the music. All these videos get challenged by organizations that claim copyright over everything that vaguely has a note of music so it’s an ordeal keeping them public. Just stay subscribed. If they disappear because TH-cam takes down we are working behind the scenes to get them back up. It can take years though! All this music is licensed but it’s a constant fight with others who claim ownership wrongly to try to steal the royalties.
It doesn't get any better than this.
Thank you! Yes it is a Beautful area!!!!
Great music, fantastic, beautiful desert scenes... wonderful... even the equipment is pretty.
Thank you very much!
Exposed a lot of Kodachrome in this territory years ago but your artistry gives it a whole new dimension. Thank you.
Thanks!!!! I did as well! (Kodachrome 64 and 200!). You are welcome !
Just Beautiful !!
Many thanks!!!!
Always a joy when a new video of yours drops - you do excellent work - thank you for all these
Glad you like them! And thanks for commenting !!!!
I'm 69 years old and have been a rail hobbyist since as long as I can remember. These videos are the best ever produced. Everything about them is 100%. Please keep up the great work.
Wow. Thank you so much !!!!
I live in Ohio but have travelled in this area for everything from r/c racing to attending the many full size tracks scattered throughout the area. Your video gave me a new perspective of the area and the beauty of it all. Thanks again.
Thanks so much !!!
Very Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Damn I hate to wax poetic but your video is like fine art! Perfect music, great sound at the right time, and just incredible caressing of the subject… rail. Lots of it. You are in the proper setting with your brush strokes of scenery and wide open deserts. Not many obstacles to worry about flying that camera. I lived in Arizona for just under a year, my father there 10. Incredible state. A lot of room, a lot of driving. Gas stations 100+ miles apart, heat, wind, and DRY. The orange units are perfect out there. You and 7 really set a high standard. I much prefer music and video. It’s therapeutic. With 7 his work is exemplary, but information overload. I want to watch rail traffic, not go to Rolling Stock Community College. (RSCC). It’s in Sacramento. 2 year degree, Hazmat, weight limits, #engines, paint schemes, heritage units, track maintenance, even rousting bums and graffiti artist scare tactics. When you graduate you’re $18k in debt with a piece of paper. But there’s always hope you lash on the BNSF or Union Pacific and go to railroad pensioners retirement home at Bakersfield. Later, Acme!
Thank you!!!!!!! Agreed. The railroads of Arizona are spectacular !!!!
Former ATSF power running on former ATSF rails. All is right in the world.
That is nice!!!
.Very nice, like.
Thank you very much
Is ABO cayon easy to get too?
East end somewhat accessible with a drone. West end is behind locked gates several miles from tracks but we were able to get permission from a local land owner to gain access to the west end… purely by chance. They happened to be driving by and a conversation was able to secure a quick visit!
AT&SF and Route 66... a great combo for railfans and car geeks! With such stunning scenery, no wonder the passengers riding their famous passenger trains like the Super Chief and El Capitan want to go "Santa Fe...All The Way!"
Couldn't agree more!!!!
I wondered if you would do an update on the Arizona & California Railroads upgrade to their GE power units - It was well worth the waiting - Another STUNNING Video - Thank you I have twice visited this small railroad during my holidays to America
Thank you!!! Had to wait a year to do most of the video as they didn’t mark the engines with the logos until early last year! So for one year was just orange units running on the line. lol
Thank you. I watched the whole thing, spellobound by your wonderful photography and music choices.
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for comments on the music !
9 trains ,,,,,,,,,,,,, that is a lot
Yup!!!
I envy your drone: it sees places I never will. With it, you capture the poetry of big trains moving through breathtakingly beautiful country. We rail fans think we know trains, but not like you. I admit, I shed tears watching this. I have watched countless train videos, but none of them came close to this. Thank you for sharing your drone with us.
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s amazing to fly like a bird and see so many new vistas and perspectives. !!!
Just what I needed...some GE⚡️Power running across the hot West 🏜....to warm up the cold Midwestern❄️weather. The scene from 1:00:16 thru 1:04:16 is just stunning. Thank you......John. ;) Yah Ta Hey//Navajo.
Thanks!!!!!
I wouldn't be surprised if these shortlines start getting hand me down GEVOs in a few years
Agreed! Bnsf is even using them for locals now
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video of the beginning of the GE 44-9W era on the Arizona and California Railroad which was documented in May 2022. The drone footage in this video is outstanding. You did a splendid job capturing the trains passing through some beautiful desert scenery. The portions of the video that were taken near sunrise and sunset really showed the beauty of the landscape. Thank you for documenting these trains and for uploading this video for those of us who never have seen these trains without your efforts. (Posted on 27 January 2025 at 0019 CST.
Thanks so much Thomas!!! The SD40 video is dear to my heart as I grew up with EMD engines so this was a bit melancholy to do a new show with the new “stars”.
Thank you. Beautiful work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Another masterpiece, thank you for making these videos. Your cinematography and editing are top notch. I look forward to more of these in the future!
Glad you like them!
Hey why do these railroads have the same paint scheme as Orange and Black paint schemes
Well it’s better than all black or all gray :). In my humble opinion. :)
John, I finally sat down to watch this, and wow! Just exquisite! Excellent work. You have definitely reinforced my desire to get a drone! Haha. Take care, and keep up the stellar work.
Thanks!!! And yes drones open up so many new possibilities !
Excellent video best one of sandpatch
Glad you liked it!!!! And thank you so much !!!
It's definitely the best railroad drone footage I've seen !!!!!!
Wow, thanks!
i worked interchange with them in Castle Hot Springs over the summer. pretty cool railroad, usually a quick swap after we would wait a few hours for them to show up.
Thanks for the info!!!!
Absolutely stunning and breathtaking. I am a big fan of your channel. Thank you ACME🙏🙏
Thanks so much !!
Yet another great video. Thanks for the great work.
Thanks again!!!!!
So I just shot the ARZC on a full chase from Parker to Mathie/CHS on Jan 14th. During that chase, we got a tip that it was the last week of the eastbound trip being in daylight, and starting Jan 20th, the CHS train would run east in darkness. What time that is I don't exactly know, but considering the BNSF side of the interchange job now gets back to Mobest in Phoenix by 8am, I can only assume the entire EB run and some of the WB is done overnight. It's probably a full flip where Cadiz now departs west when the CHS train used to depart east
Thanks!!!! I am guessing they are going back to their 2022/3 schedule but that is a guess! For much of 2024 they departed Parker for CHS usually around 9 am or so. It would vary somewhat. Their normal operations over the last decade are departing Parker at around 2:30 am for CHS so they would get interchange done by6/7 am and be on way back to Parker for an easy “normal” departure for Cadiz at their normal 2:30 pm departure time (which lately has only been on Sundays). I actually liked the recent schedule better at least for getting trains from Parker to CHS as u could get the trains thru the granite wash mountains / black cat pass in daylight both directions. So we will lose the much easier “all day chase”. But at least now if it does change Cadiz will be doable again but that’s a whole different ballgame!
Please continue to make videos, these are amazing and they brighten my day!
Thank you!!!! Will be some updates to the Peavine and Arizona BNSF videos in the coming months !
Another great video. Know it takes a lot of time, driving and drone flying to get all the raw footage not counting all the planning time before the trip. It really shows not only in the movie but trying to tell an interesting story at the same time. Good Job!
Thanks 👍. Yeah but it’s a labor of love. Just such spectacular scenery. It is an honor to share God’s blessings for all of us!
Absolutely LOVE the Rose Acres switcher ❤️🚂
Will be doing a video just on it someday but it may be a while yet. It just doesn’t get used at all at least for now but there are some changes coming that MAY get that engine back used again!
G R O U P .... (nyanyi bersama!! kapan ya pinternya !!)

All the various elements have been brought together to create a masterpiece.

Thank you very much! And same. I miss the sd40’s!!!
The shot that train snaking through the desert at 11 min is epic! Truly. The music is well chosen.

Glad you enjoyed it!!!! Yes I very much miss the "Green and Cream" era SD45's!! (rebuilt as SD40-2's). Hope you check out the SD40 era video of the Arizona and California here: th-cam.com/video/cf4yULfd9Ns/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bekymHnaZx7rCoMD

thank you!!!
excellent video.. if its better dont put background music , just keep original video sound 🤨
thanks!!!!!! We would love to do t hat but unfortunately drones don't actually record.. if they did all you would hear is the buzzing of the drone motors!!!! HOWEVER I agree a version of just pure engine/horn sounds would be awesome and someday hope to release a "non-music" version for those that just want the railroad sounds!!! thanks!!!!!!!
@@AcmeCinematography you can record locomotive, track sounds separately by putting external Mic near to track ... there are many wireless microphones available for DJI ... :P
thanks!
