WW2 Creech Wood POW Camp/Embarkment Camp #historyhunters #dday #militaryhistory
Creech Woods was home to assembly camps A11 and A12, which could house 3,850 men and 300 vehicles. The camps were used to house troops from various units.
Creech Woods was also a temporary headquarters for General Eisenhower and General Montgomery.
After D-Day, Creech Woods was used as a Prisoner of War camp for German troops captured in Normandy. The footings of the huts can still be seen today.

Smuggling explodes In the 18th century illegal trade across England's coast grew at a prodigious rate. Very impressive memorial. I well remember the 80s and 90s around the war memorials on remembrance Sunday, the services were not attended as they are today, even though I've always been interested in military history , I seem to recall thinking I had no place at the memorial service as I hadn't/wasn't in the military. The more modern conflicts and the sad losses that British families have made has given the importance of the war memorials/remembrance Sunday a renewed place in our nations history. In that I mean that more people than ever seem to be interested in respecting the fallen....long may it continue. There is a sailor on my local memorial who was on the Hood, his brother was in the RAF and was killed 3 weeks before in action....he is buried in the local churchyard and a small grave stone is next to his commemorating his sailor brother. You should do a video on the D-Day museum , that would be interesting, all the very best m8😊😊😊😊

Im sure ive read the burma book about the chindits or something very similar. The odd thing is the 'forgotten dead'....i found one of the copies in a charity shop from the original publication run and its signed by ken small himself....apparently he would be at the tank on a weekend signing books years ago. I had never heard of the story but after reading it i decided that the next holiday me and the missus had would be to visit the memorial. Cue spring 2019....we went to the tank and took photos of me with the book stood in front of it...we then went to Lawrence of Arabiias grave then on to Bovington tank museum....did it all over 3 days ...all thanks to ken smalls book.. His own life was quite interesting, i had a video on my channel about this but its not on there now, cheers 😊😊😊

Interesting that there's still stuff there. I remember several years ago me and the missus stayed in Weymouth, right at the end of the harbour in a b&b....outside on the wall and protected by glass is the graffiti of American soldiers who were waiting to embark for D-Day...I wonder how many came back?. There was only one V1 heard in my part of the world, Christmas eve 1944 in the night one was heard flying over, it exploded over Tudhoe Village cricket club demolishing the pavilion. It had been launched by a german plane over the north Sea, probably aimed at Manchester but went way of course!!!. Mark Felton covers the whole operation as it was part of a few launched that night😊😊

I do like ww2 torches from any nation, simple technology but odten they still work!!...same with field telephones. Nice knife and family connection. The flag is really good, the type of thing you see in a museum....the problem i think is large items like that have to be displayed, maybe as part of a set up. I dont collect Japanese stuff as such myselfm...but ive got plenty of flags, stuck to the ceiling with drawing pins.....only if they have already had this done before😊. Hi there, a couple of observations here. The first being the badge on the Luftwaffe Feldwebel in the picture WILL be a shooting lanyard (see Brian L.Davis book Uniforms and Insignia of the Luftwaffe vol I pages 168 - 169. And the BeVo Railways and Police insignia's have NEVER been on a uniform. They're both in unused condition cut straight from a roll. The police insignia would have been sown to the front of a soft field cap. The word on the Hindenburg cross is Pforfzheim, it is a city in Federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg in Southwest Germany, this will be the address of the manufacturer of the medal. MARTIN.........

I can say with 90% certainty that the person who made the dagger was a Cuttler from Nordrhein-Westfalen called Willie Mortag. He served in the Waffen SS. He never fired a shot in anger. His services were as a ceremonial dagger and Sword maker. He was a very interesting man to talk to. He passed away in 79/80.

He said it was the best Quality Surgical Steel, and the SS demanded the best. He told me that if it had the Solingen Stamp, then it was probably one of his. @@militaryquest4147 I was 19 when I first met Willie, ( I am 65 now ) he is one character from my past that I will never forget, I always called him Herr Mortage but, even though he had very interesting History, it was his wife Erna that (I was told by the powers that be) to make friends with. It turned out that she was a Russian spy. We employed nearly fifty local German civilians on the camp I was on and out of the fifty, we estimated that at least 19 were spying for the Eastern Block. She made no secret of that fact. She knew that I was doing a job for the British Army. Even so, she was a very interesting person, with a back story that would make James Bond proud. When I was having lunch one Sunday, she showed me her proudest posetion, which was a Gold medal and a photo of a ceremony of her receiving the medal from Leonid Breshniev (the Russian Leader) the medal was a solid Gold Russian Red Star. It was awarded for services to Mother Russia. She made no secret of that fact. After I got to know her and Willie she said, I know you have a Job to do, just like me, but that doesn't mean we can't respect each other and be friends. Over the months we did become friends, and she paid me one of the best compliments I ever had from a German. She had no Children. (that was a choice, her and her husband made) and she took my hands in hers and said, I was the best son she never had. A couple of weeks later, I received a phone call from the Hospital, saying that Willie was Very ill and could I please come. I was there as she turned off the Ventilator. I never saw her again. I did go to the house, but it was all closed up and empty. I found out from the village Butcher that Erna, returned to Russia.

What a amazing memory ! Willie & Erna obviously made a big impact on you as you still remember after all these years ! This would make for a good interview/ video

Nice one m8, I've got a n04 deac , dry fire...mines a long branch 1942 dated one. Problem with mine is its started to play up...the extractor part of the bolt turns up along with the turning bolt , so if you yanked back on it the bolt will come out....apparently its a common problem, unsure but if I cock it I just flick the extractor down....cheers m8
