Absolutely awesome video
Why do trains horn when they are entering the tunnel?
isn't the very start where the airport is now?
The City of Philadelphia has a long history of screwing things up. What the rail system could have been?
Two things: 1. This is the most comprehensive video I have seen on this El section. 2. My great grandmother lived by the 69th Street terminal on Ashby Road. Hearing that El “squeal” sure does bring back memories.
relaxing :)
Hi Henry. I'm an Archive Producer currently working on a documentary set in Philadelphia in the 1990s and I am looking for footage of the El train in this era. Do you own this video, and if so, would you be open to licensing your footage to us?

A bunch of the old cars were saved when the new cars arrived for rush hour and tripper sèrrvice. Unfortunately when the ADA was passed they had to be retired because of the posts in the doors
JG Brills For Broad Street Subway. Art Deco Cars manufactured from 1928-1936 for this line. Miss riding on these Classic Rapid Transit coaches. 🚃🚃🚋❤
Awesome horn!!!
Hey, do you know what the copyright on this video would be, and would I be able to use it in my own project? I'm working on a video about the M4 cars, and having this as b-roll to show off the earlier M3s would be a big help.
Wow!
Do you have any footage from inside the main building of Frankford Terminal?
54:34 How did you get those shots of the EL crossing the NE Corridor?
Thanks for sharing this video. I especially like the outside views of each station and the commentary describing the area.
The one thing that was missing was I95 construction & fairmount station demolition
This is INCREDIBLE and your video digitization of the film is Spectacular - THANK YOU!! Brings back very fond memories of when I was a kid, was fascinated by the PTC/SEPTA Budd Subway Trains, and would ride the M-F El into Philly with my father, and we would stand in the Front Car and look out the Front Door Window and witness exactly the same moving images, that are on this great video. MANY THANKS AGAIN!
Awesome video wish you could make one of Locust street subway train tunnel all the way to the end of the tunnel or the switch back. 😊
30:31 meet
14:05 - The TV studios where "American Bandstand" originated. Before it was Channel 12, it was channel 6, WFIL-TV.
And David Gunn's color coding never caught on. It's known to this day as "The El".
They was the most dangerous El in philly when I was a kid , that’s the Patt Abbot EL would shake you scared from 30th Street to 15 th Street scarier than a roller coaster, it shook so bad people would scream stop train or slow the train down 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂, I was scared laughing
25:54 provisions for a line that never came to be.
The video is over at @50:20. After that is 9 minutes of static.
Wow, the Spring Garden station on the Ridge spur was still open 45:33
Miss all of these old Train and Aviation home videos on VHS they had style and the best information about these things growing up😊
Thank You!
think I was on this trip!
I always wondered what was those extra tracks that go up were for at Erie station
In this video, they were used as a turnback loop. But what they were actually planned to be used for was the Roosevelt Blvd subway that they are still thinking of building today
They are for the Boulevard extension
Excellent! Many memories!
Wish I could go back in time and tell them to keep 100 of them around cause they definitely need them 😂😂
Those were the ugliest subway cars ever.
but there were no homeless people on them
@@sollyparker3947 that’s because now Septa doesn’t give a s#!t anymore. They just look the other way now
@@zazaranger5 Yup and thats why Im glad I dont have to catch it
@@sollyparker3947 And Septa police are a joke..literally.
When subway trains looked like subway trains. I truly miss riding these "Almond Joys."
What do they look like now
@@marreese8405 Garbage, at least the current MFL cars do.
@@libertubey2199True the Adtrash M4’s suck
When this was posted by placepearl in 2009 after carson home video it went right to the ride.
Rode the sub a million times and never been to the lower level of pattison station, was always mysterious to me- Thanks for the video 👍
I miss the old Budd cars they were way more reliable than the dhailmer benz cars they're using 😮 I'm getting goosebumps because this footage and place in time is a ghost 😢Berks Huntington Allegheny church and bridge and pratt were original.. Church eastbound was exit only 😊 And all the neighborhoods along the line from Girard to fkd terminal were nice areas 😢
Great video. Brought back many memories when I rode the EL. Thats how I learned my way around the sections of Philly. One of the great elevated-subway systems in the US,from my point of view. Thank you..
This was great!! That’s the EL I remember!!
I remember watching this on Temple TV
Does anyone know near what station the Harbison Milk water tower or Vick’s Vapor Rub water towers were located? As a kid from Olney in the late 60s and early 70s, I always kept an eye out for them when I was on the el.
You can see it as the train pulls closer to York-Dauphin Station.
Do You Have Broad-Ridge Spur To 8th-Market?
How things have changed in 25 years
Yup no homeless on the EL
Post the other Broad Street Subway video that they recorded in the 1970s or 1980s
30:26 Honking horns at each other.
GREAT video! Brings back fantastic memories! Thx for this!
This used to be dark territory until the late 90’s when fiber optic cables were laid to provide signal equipment and passing sidings added also.
22:04 The Market-Frankford Line runs express, faster than underground trolleys on the streetcar subway.
Express service was revised on the Broad Street Subway in 1983, with express trains being extended to Olney, and skipping North Philadelphia in both directions.
Is it the express train?
