Celebrating Independence through Every Voice!
This Independence Day at PlayStreet, Bengaluru, we embarked on a journey of love, hope, and inclusion. Our skit, a tribute to the freedom fighters who shaped our nation-Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, Charan Das, and a British officer-was brought to life by our incredible children and dedicated therapists.
But this wasn't just any skit. Our stars were non-verbal children who, through the magic of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices and the loving guidance of our therapists, played their parts beautifully. The voices you heard were pre-recorded by our therapists, but the spirit and determination belonged entirely to the children.
Two of our young villagers had a heartfelt conversation, showing how the bravery of our freedom fighters has gifted us a country where every voice-no matter how it speaks-can be heard. Their participation is a powerful reminder that independence is not just about freedom from the past but also about embracing every individual, regardless of their abilities, in the fabric of our nation's future.
This skit wasn't just a performance; it was a celebration of the indomitable spirit within each child, a testament to what can be achieved when we break barriers and believe in possibilities.

    Do you have any reference article telling that Wi-fi signal are causing autism...and about the electron theory being talked about. Many things are being told on assumption without any scientific evidence. This is also diluting the good content in the talk. Kindly give proper reference about the Wi-fi and electron theory. A doctor should not speak without scientific reference.

    Soma is really an impressive personaliy. I had to laugh when she answered in the end : Do I look like a priest? She does not look like a priest, but she pushed her son further and further, because she was convinced that he is able to controle his bodymovement. And in Minute 9 , her son shows his emprovement in verbal speech. This is really amazing. I see many similiarities to facilitated Communication, which was damned in Germany very strictly. I hope Soma or scientists around her are doing studies to prove the scientistic world, that RPM and FC is not (necessarily) about manipulation.thanks Form this great video!

Some of the information shared is new to me and of which I have not heard shared by other Functional Drs. As a wife and mother of a child on the Autism Spectrum I really appreciate this information on behalf of myself and my husband. I hope other parents of children with Autism will find this and other videos by Dr. Ashwani and other Functional Doctors so they can get their child/children the much need help towards a better quality of life and health.     Parent Question: if my daughter eat egg most of the time she gets fever. What does this mean? PlayStreet: If she is getting fever only when she intakes egg, probably she might be having an allergic reaction. We would suggest meeting a pediatrician to rule out the same or any other allergies that your child might have.

    Parent Question: My baby is not showing interest to eat new food items. She only eats some group of foods which she likes ... PlayStreet: The first place to begin with your child would be getting them to create interests and engaging them around food. This can be done by creating opportunities for them to play with food, involving them in the process of cooking, serving during family meal times and so much more. Expose and explore food. If they don't like the smell of it, the sight of it, the touch of it....IT'S NOT GOING TO GO INTO THEIR MOUTHS! 🙂 Also please make sure to meet with doctors and a speech therapist (specialized in feeding) who will be able to assess, and give the right strategies to help with improving her feeding.

    Parent Question: My son likes only crunchy food..like dry cornflakes, pomegranate.. so is it good or not? PlayStreet: There is nothing wrong for a child to have food preferences.. the issue comes when the child limits his diet to only these kind of items and the healthy food doesn't go in. Such sensory preferences also indicate the under-responsiveness of the oral sensory system which needs more texture and sound (which is provided by the crunchiness) to provide input to the brain... and hence the preference. It would be advisable to look at the overall diet and make sure there is a balance of food going in and if there isn't, to look at exposing the oral sensory system to a variety of sensory input to help it get adequate input to the brain - could be through oral motor exercises or by using a variety of food textures, tastes and temperatures. These are suggestions, but please do consult a speech therapist or a feeding therapist if you have more concerns.

    Parent Question: Can u pls mention the reflex names that are referred here in this webinar for motor and sensory issues? PlayStreet: Spinal Gallant Reflex and the Protective Extensor Thrust. In the pyramid of learning, it is very important for primitive and postural reflexes to get integrated the right way for better ad more complex movement patterns to develop. Only then can cognition, language and academics be learned with ease. So before starting anything, please check for primitive and postural reflexes in your child, and work on them if they have not gotten integrated the right way.

    Parent Question: My son scratches his body parts and smells them. How can I help him control this behavior? PlayStreet - This could be because of sensory under-responsiveness, especially of the olfactory, tactile and proprioceptive systems. Lot of exposure to this sensation to satisfy his needs would help him. Smells like lemon, mint, curry leaves, rosemary, eucalyptus, basil, etc. are stronger and can be provided to the child. You could also use flowers like rose or lavender, fruits and spices like orange, cinnamon, or even scented play-doh. You could play guessing games with these different smells which helps him integrate this information in a functional and purposeful way without making it just about stimulating his senses. For satisfying his tactile needs, you could encourage him to touch a variety of textures. For example, your bag could contain a crinkly blanket (space blanket), bubble wrap, soft fleecy materials, pinecones, carpet square samples, cotton samples, feathers, large seashells and smooth, cool stones to feel. Guessing games or other fun games can be incorporated using these stimuli to again keep the activity functional and purposeful.

Only then choosing the right treatment protocol would work. Otherwise, it would just be a temporary bandage that is put over the behaviour.

    Parent Question: if we stop the child's OT, does child will go back in terms of skills? PlayStreet: For any skill that is not used, it will be lost. That is how it is for all of us. Similarly, during the therapy sessions, the child is exposed to various stimuli to help the child regulate themselves and create purposeful and functional movements that will help them in the dynamic world. As long as the practise continues in purposeful ways at home and in school and the child continues to stay regulated during that time, the skills should not be lost.

    Parent Question: How do I encourage my child to do activities when he has very very low motivation and always tries to escape activities. He becomes hyper when we try to make him do. He has mild autism but it is very difficult to motivate him to do much - from years I am trying and so are the therapists. PlayStreet: When a child is running away, it means that they either find the activity too boring or find it too challenging. A child goes into a fight, flight, freeze mode when this happens. More instructions or forcing the situation will only trigger this mode more. Instead we would suggest working with the child and following his lead in terms of his interests and creating a co-regulated pattern where you both stay regulated in simple activities and challenges can be given gradually to gradually to build up his sense of self, his self-esteem and his self confidence. Go to child’s level and introduce or suggest activity that they like. Parental involvement is a must. Make this interaction initially 80-20, 75-25, 60-40 and then 50-50 gradually. Don't expect 100% from the child. Start small and build it up till the child feels confident in himself and is willing to take up challenges. Maintain eye contact throughout the conversation and make sure your body language shows you are there to collaborate with him and not instruct or order him around.     Parent Question: My son flaps his hands whenever he is excited. He also likes scratching. How can I help him to stop doing these activities? PlayStreet: Flapping of hands is known as a self-calming behavior. It’s done for many purposes. It can be because he’s excited, anxious or he needs it for arousal. Stopping it should never be how we think about helping your child. We need to instead think about how we can make it more purposeful and channel it into something more appropriate. Use of sensory diets throughout the day which involves multi-sensory activities , understanding the anxieties of the child and putting the right strategies in, co-regulation, etc. will help bring down the hand flapping behavior. For scratching, we will need more details to why and when he’s doing for us to give you an appropriate answer.

    Parent Question: How do we distinguish if it's SPD or Autism in non-verbal kid? PlayStreet: Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is a condition that affects how your brain processes sensory information. Sensory information includes things you see (Visual), hear (auditory), smell (olfactory), taste (gustatory), touch (tactile), joint pressure (proprioception), and balance (vestibular). SPD can affect all your senses, or just one Child may under/overreact to sensory input. SPD is mostly sensory whereas ASD has a combination of sensory, emotional and social components.

    We had approached different therapist. One Behavioural Therapist was able to control his hyperactivity. She also trained him to sit in a chair without any activity. Initially she had controlled him by scaring him saying "I will beat you "...later on, he started getting under control and increased his sitting tolerance. is it right approach? Hyperactivity can be caused because of various reasons. One of the main reasons is a different sensory processing system. Since his sensory needs are not being met, he might be actively seeking to satisfy his sensory needs. Threatening the child with physical punishment is DEFINITELY NOT the right approach! They may listen to you now but unless we figure out the reason for his/her hyperactivity, this is just a short-term solution which may lead to further problems. Co-regulation and collaboration are keys to getting a better interaction with your child. Without these foundations, every thing you do will be a band-aid approach.

    My 8 yr old, grade 2, child is touching other children. The school has started complaining. he used to touch hair of girls and dresses of other classmates. how to make him understand to avoid this. You need to know the reason why he’s doing this behavior. Understanding the cause of a behavior will help in bringing a solution. Second, sit him down and explain that this is not the right behavior. Always express behaviors as bad and not your child. Meaning tell your child that hitting or touching others is a bad behavior instead of telling your child that he’s a bad boy. Third, teach him other appropriate ways of expressing himself. Tell him to communicate what he’s feeling. You can use social stories to help him understand the right and wrong behaviors. If the child is non-speaking, make sure he has a robust AAC system in place so that he is able to communicate with his friends and family in a more effective manner. Another thing to always check for is his sensory processing - is he trying to get information a different way? There could be multiple factors leading to this "behaviour"... you would need to investigate this more to really understand what the child is going through.

    When I tell my child to do his homework for 30 mins, after which he can watch TV for 10 mins, he starts to bargain as to why writing is for more time and TV for short time. He wants both times to be equal or play time/ TV time to be more. What can I do in this scenario? First of all, explain to your child that homework is his work and watching TV is a leisure or a pastime. He needs to understand the difference and then you can explain why homework is for more time. Also, instead of giving a time frame for break, you can change it to one episode of cartoon or one song or one game. Because children do not develop the whole concept of time and they may not understand 10 minutes or 30 minutes. Give them a break where there is a clear-cut ending so that will make them stop when you want them to and get back to their work .

      If he is seeing tubelight that means that he is trying to awaken his visual system and he needs to do it to connect to the world for learning. He would need good support of vision therapy and sensory integration.
