do I have to go to my primary care doctor in order to get a referral and begin this long process? Is there any easier way does anyone have someplace that I could go or order the in home test online. I haven't been able to sleep for a long time and I had no idea it was sleep apnea but someone told me that likely is now. I'm desperate to find some help quickly. I don't understand this crap.

I keep seeing the above distinction drawn- between FULLY healed and returning to NORMAL activities- and I can't see what it amounts to, in practical terms. For example, to use my own case, 1-week post operation, being told by my doctor at the end of this Summer that I may now exercise (walk, lift weights, strike bag, shoot baskets, swing bat) would induce me to say to myself- 'Thank God; it's over'. Apparently, though, such optimism would be 9 months premature and, again I don't see why, as a practical assessment of the matter, it would be unwarranted. What more would be lacking in my recovery?

I’ve got one of these scheduled for next week. My doctor pushed for and recommended the in person because he believes it’s better. My insurance denied the in person test. I recognize that the at home test is fine as I don’t have any heart conditions or other conditions that would make an in person test more necessary. But I find it frustrating and insulting that MY DOCTOR ordered the in person test and the INSURANCE that I pay for somehow thinks they are in a position to determine what’s better for my health more so than my actual doctor and myself. Screw insurance companies.

I have had insurance deny two ordered tests ( not sleep related). The first one I had and did not know it was denied so they are making me pay the bill. The second test I got notified in time and have cancelled the procedure. I don't want or need the hassle.

Sleep studies at a sleep center are like mid evil torture. Loaded down with wires. Nasty freakin goop all over your torso and head. Can’t sleep like normal. I move around a lot in my sleep. Can’t do that during a sleep test. I also can’t use a Cpap machine. For the same reason. Sleep tests are a scam in my opinion.

Mouth breathing generally isn’t good for you. Nasal-breathing is the way to go. It is naturally how we are meant to breathe. A lot of people resort to mouth-breathing because they think their nose is too stuffy, but the less you breathe through your nose, the smaller the airways get because you stop using it very often. There are a ton of benefits to breathing through your nose. It may seem uncomfortable at first.

If you are a mouth breather, most of these at home tests will not work. The device will wake you up every 30 minutes when the nose sensor doesn't sense breath, thus invalidating the entire test. You won't be sleeping normally with an audible sensor going off every 30 minutes, which means no normal sleep patterns will be recorded. Of course no doctors nor the test mfg. ever thinks about this because they're more interested in just collecting $ from you.

Unless you are awake and purposefully holding your breath, your breathing is only going to stop during sleep if you do have sleep apnea. This at home test is made for quickness and convenience to get an initial diagnosis. If it’s confirmed that you do have sleep apnea, you must have a follow up in clinic test where they do further monitoring and more extensive testing :-)
