I'm from a family of Fen skaters (a champion or two apparently) and am so pleased that we still had decent winters when I was a kid. I remember 1985-1987 vividly, I'd finally got my own pair after hand me downs, and we skated till we dropped, though on a lake rather than the fens. Very happy memories, and a few pics of a 15 year old who thought she was very cool, with legwarmers and Walkman! Lovely video.

The lake could not be 32 inches lower on one side or the other without being under extreme surface tension which it is not and therefore water would flow downhill from one side of the lake to the other if one side of the lake were 32 inches higher this is common sense.

In the late Seventies and early Eighties my family would go to the field near The Dog and Doublet public house to skate. The 'rink' was enormous. There used to be holes smashed in the ice with safety cones around them to prevent people accidently falling in them. I still drive past Whittlesey where the fiend still gets flooded every year, but I have never seen it frozen enough for people to skate on it safely. Fond memories, great documentary.

I learned of this project while visiting the Edinburgh festival. The pubs were so busy that you had to share tables, which made the experience that much more fun. During one such story-swap out tablemate mentioned he was an engineer who had worked on TH and that set me off on the topic.

Great video. Not every innovation is practicable. The French and Americans also abandoned tracked air cushioned vehicles (TACV) As I understand it the basic problem is momentum drag. Air has to be accelerated to the speed of the vehicle and is then expelled to create the hover. At high speed this is an extremely large amount of air. The energy required is too much compared to the alternatives. TACV’s have been in operation at lower speeds.

AS the video said, they had already progressed to maglev. Which the Chinese are now using. So, not just aircushion, but maglev was thrown away. Like throwing the baby out with the bathwater! .

My Dads family were all from the Fens. Benwick and Ely. Dad would tell me how as a lad in the 1920/30s he and his brothers and mates would skate for miles across the frozen Fens jumping any barbwire fences that still stood up above the ice. He still had his old blades, Norwegians I think he called them and they were strapped onto the foot with leather straps.

It makes my blood boil to see a projects like the RTV hover train after so much work and money spent,TSR2, and I can't remember the name of the British rocket program, the list goes on, other program plus the demise of our aircraft industry and god knows how many other British industries gone. All though money, when the government can find £50 billion just like that, to give to the EU. billions building aircraft carriers and buying American aircraft to put on them.

I'm thinking about how to make a hover train model along the same lines . If I pull it off I'll post it on You Tube. I remember Rohr used this Brit tech on their design and then it all seemed to disappear. Still seems like a very good idea to me.

Hilarious! Beautiful effort! We have the pipe at 0:41 (credibility established). Then at 1:50-1:54 we have A MARVELOUS facial expression(s) of a scientist working hard while we are hearing about desert mirage and refraction (just perfect timing). Then immediately we have a discrediting of a Samuel Rowbothams telescope while flashing a triple six hand sign... then pseudo science is mentioned. This is finest piece of theater here, bravo! And hey can you tell us what did you see through that measuring device of yours? LOL I AM LOVING THIS SHIT!
