I "had to" read this in high school. I chose to come back and listen again now at age 25. Pay attention kids, there's a reason we make you read this (and 1984, Brave New World, Lord of the Flies, etc.)

Even existentialist philosophers to some degree wanted to be people-pleasers and to sell their philosophy to the public, perhaps to validate their own rightness and their names. But the real core meaning of existentialism is that "nothing really matters" in a world of tragedy and absurdity. It is "reaching" to try to put a positive spin on that. There is a certain freedom in realizing that you have no real obligations nor prohibitions upon you, in a meaningless world, beyond the practical results of your decisions. But that freedom is a consolation prize, not a gift. We can still be humanist in the sense of trying to console others in the tragic absurdity, yet still the underlying theme of human life is pain in a universe that does not share any human sense of meaning. Existentialism has nothing to offer humanity but clear-eyed truth. Few people will really want that.

Nothing is nothing, You never get something from nothing, never get rational mind from non-rational, never get life from non-life without intelligence. Scientists are clueless on the origin of life (abiogenesis). Even if you create life in a lab then surely that require the best scientists & technology out there. Please explain the origin of a cell, explain mathematical laws of physics, explain complex chemistry, complex biology and all other scientific laws etc. Universe is incredibly fine tuned and the only way out for the atheists is the multiverse theory but that too must have had a beginning with fine tuned constants. Look multiverse is just a theory and there is ZERO evidence. You cannot go beyond the event horizon of this universe so scientists are permanently cut off from viewing or getting any sort of data from another universe/multiverse therefore rely on metaphysics to explain reality that requires faith just like theists who believe in God! I always ask the atheists "WHERE DID THE MATHEMATICAL OR NATURAL LAWS CAME FROM? LOOK SCIENTISTS FREQUENTLY WRITE THESE COMPLEX MATHS FORMULAE ON THEIR BLACKBOARD" and that requires the highest of intelligence and NOT from NOTHING! Oh by the way quantum vacuum is not nothing !

Anybody who is not a psychopath would always help a person in need in front of them. There's even a law inforcement to "assist a person in danger"; which means as society, and idividuals it consists of, we all agree this is not just the right thing to do, but obligatory thing to do. Whoever can stand and watch a child drowning is a sick freak. And his non-assistance is punishable by law. So this part is obvious. The second part is less obvious. And it's where Singer has to learn some of geo-politics and finance. To help anybody by giving money to a charity is laughable. Those charities (OXFAM, UNISEF, UN, Red Cross, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Clinton AID Foundation, Soros Foundation etc...) are institutions which function is to tranfer money from the public to the private sector. To the hands of the private investors. Whoever doesn't understand this, doesn't understand the first thing about how the world works. Here's a good exemple of investigation of (only just) one of those "charity AID" foundations by independant media, that unmaks the modus operandi of those charities: th-cam.com/video/uR5vPjrHKOM/w-d-xo.html Does Peter Singer knows that? I wonder.
