Using a tree on my property in cut it into logs and took it down to my local sawmill. I had him cut this log into 2 inch thick slabs. I used a draw knife to take the bark and damaged sap wood off. You could use a chisel or a saw.
Using a level for a straight edge and ryobi 18v circular saw I cut the width and length to what I wanted.
I took 80 grit sandpaper on my belt sander to smooth out the bandsaw marks. Then I stepped up to 400 grit. The belt sander makes easy work of it. You could use other types of power sanders as well.
I used boiled linseed oil as the top coat.
