Really enjoyed the history of the nets but as many have said before me, times have changed. Stocks need to be let up the rivers to spawn before none are left.

Worst fishing I. Ireland ,,,pure scam and no fish in their rivers or lakes due to mercury poisoning ,over fishing for decades and neglect of environment......pure tourist trap run by con men .....steer well clear..!!!

Thankfully times have changed, I remember the Asahi incident too where many many fish salmon included were killed by poisoning the water, very sad

A net with a dozen or so salmon draws gasps of horror from anglers with few realizing that hundreds of salmon were avoiding the nets and escaping upstream to spawn. Salmon disease U.D.N. killed more salmon and big sea trout than these netsmen killed in a lifetime. The brutally of the kill was no different than the way an angler dispatched his salmon after he had exhausted it during many minutes of struggling to be free. A wallop from an anglers 'priest' is no less brutal than being 'coshed' from a netsman club!

17 salmon, £50 quids worth is havin a joke liein twat .if he wants to get in touch with me I,ll give him £300 quid for these salmon and still make a nice wee earner fore myself

good riddance to the drift nets......salmon angler pays 30 to 100 euro permit per day for a chance at a salmon "which he sportingly returns" whilst a drift netter was paying 25euro per season to rape the sea of the mighty atlantic salmon, taking hundreds, and sometimes thousands in a season.....only shame is that when they received their payoffs, most reverted to poaching.....

@jbmurphy4 it certainley was amazing, ive spoken to a good few of the older people,anglers etc. none of them recall ice like that, i think it was the way it all came together after the rapid thaw. thanks for the comments

@MTthemoy Im glad he wasnt stuck to it. He looked like a tired duck alright! I passed over the bridge there in Foxford that day, but was in a rush to a funeral, so didnt get a good look at the river. What I did see was amazing though! Something like this might have happened in 1963, maybe?

@jbmurphy4 It was not stuck to the ice,but I would say it was very weak. It survived the journey under the bridge, came out the other side and carried on down the river. I hope it lived. The whole scene was amazing, no one in living memory has seen it before.
