Is this the best way to support local bike trails and infrastructure?
I’ve been meaning to interview cyclists in person for quite some time now…
But to be honest, I’ve been too shy to do it. It’s a lot easier to sit behind my computer and record videos than to actually go out and engage with the community.
I think there’s a lot that can be done from behind a laptop, but there’s certain types of interactions that go best in person.
This was my first attempt at live interviews from the Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA.
I was able to speak to 7 people, but only 2 wanted to come on camera.
I know I’ve got to find a way to get useful info from those that don’t actually want to come on camera. It’s not for everyone.
In general, I’m still trying to find the best way to make an impact with the skills I’ve developed. What do you all think? What’s the most useful type of content you’ve seen from my channel to date?

I lived in Tucson (Casas Adobes area/The Bluffs neighborhood) for 4 years--2016-2020--and I loved our time there. Can't beat the weather. The Loop is great. MTB riding is fantastic--there are so many great trail systems to ride. The hiking is even better than the cycling, in my opinion. As far as riding on roads alongside drivers--watch out. Tucson drivers are pretty horrible. A lot of them never learned how to drive correctly, are always on their phones, and/or are overtly reckless and aggressive. There are a lot of memorial ghost bikes all over Tucson. I finally got so spooked by near misses that I mainly stuck to the Loop or MTB. Mt. Lemmon is incredible. You can also ride up the back side of Lemmon on trails/jeep roads--pretty epic. Fantastic group rides. Again, though, if you're riding on your own, especially, watch out for the dangerous driving you will encounter.

Actually, Amsterdam is a bit mediocre as far as Dutch bike infrastructure standards go. Rule of thumb: The newer the city, the better. Lelystad, Zoetermeer, Almere, all better than Amsterdam for bikes. Exception: Rotterdam. Newly built after WW2 but with the car philosophy in mind. Turning it back, though. Utrecht and Groningen are old cities that have better bike infrastructure than Amsterdam.

09:02 Goyerdijk! No, it’s not a cycling lane. It is just a quiet, narrow rural road, but it is a popular cycling route along country estates. Part of a long distant cycling route from the coast to the German border. I often go there with my racing bike from Utrecht. The road is at the bottom of a ridge, and every turn north leads to a slope on a hill. you managed to pick another popular recreational cycling area: de Posbank. it's the highest hill (about 110 m) of the 'northern' Netherlands. It's covered in heath, which flowers purple in august.

Imagine how you blow your helmet if you visit actually bike friendly cities in the Netherlands like Utrecht, Nijmegen, Maastricht. Yes, compared to basically anywhere outside the Netherlands (maybe scandinavian cities excempt) it is awesome but among the Dutch it is considered one of the worst cycling cities. Not so much Amsterdam at fault for that tbh, it is the nature of being Adult Disneyland.

We don't have much hills but we do have A LOT of wind (because it's flat?) Funny enough, old cities like Amsterdam have crappier bikelanes because roads are often narrow because the buildings and roads have been there for hundreds of years (generally speaking). If you look at newer cities like Almere, that have been build from scratch a few decades ago, you'll find much better bike infrastructure because it was part of the planning from the beginning. The older cities are slowly being converted/adapted to modern standards but it's sometimes harder to find the space. And because biking is a part of our culture, motorized vehicles automatically are more considered to bicycles and pedestrians. They are used to sharing the road in cities.

With a straight up bike and speeds like 20kmh it is actually quite hare to fall on your head, when you have normal reflexes. You tend to fall on hands and knees..

Have you discovered what has prevented getting all bike paths, bike lanes, safety paths, trails, and low traffic roads all together on one map ap? From what I can see, most bike trail aps treat bike routes as the destination for your toy bike - as in go here, play with your toy bike on this path, put it back on your car and drive home. But when using a bike as transportation to the bigger world of possible destinations it becomes cumbersome to jump around on 2, 3, or more map aps to find a safe and efficient route to a meaningful destination. Nobody would be using nav systems in their cars if they had to use one ap to find Interstates, another ap for county roads, and then yet another ap to display the city street that a business or residence is located on. But somehow paths and trails for bikes has remained fragmented among so many map aps that it is a tedious challenge to figure out how to connect existing bike lanes, paths, and trails into a useful route. I do use GoogleMaps mainly because it's free and no other map ap has shown me enough info to be worth a subscription. I'm glad you pointed out how to use aerial image to zoom in on GoogleMaps green lines and determine what is really there for cyclists. I do that and have been frequently appalled by the dangerous roads with high speed limits and no shoulders that get green lines on GM. But even more often terrific safety paths that parallel a highway do not show up with a green line. Anyhow, my main question is what is the hurdle to getting all bike lanes/paths/trails consolidated into one map ap? Thanks.

While there might be short gaps and it's not always the shortest route, you can find ongoing bike lanes from the Swedish city of Malmö (Sweden usually only has bike lanes within the cities) through Denmark, Northern Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium into the French city of Lille (where it drops to only slightly better than American standard). Also the quality may vary - Denmark loves these edge lanes and smaller towns in Germany and Belgium may force you on crappy sidewalks.

@@kailahmann1823 Germany often makes cyclist and pedestrians share a lane or sidewalk, or separates them with only a hardly visible lane. As a cyclist this means you constantly have to deal with pedestrians that walk into your path. Extremely annoying.
