Iowa Chess Club | Maybe 1200 versus 1500
Good use of the Queen’s Pawn opening for a little while.
This game was setting up to be big upset but some weird decision resulted in the game being heavily tilted towards black… I’m sure you can find the moment.

Mastering Chess Tactics in Iowa | My Queen Trap Debut
มุมมอง 74หลายเดือนก่อน
Hitting the tactics pretty hard after the break. I am gearing up to play in some more tournaments before the end of 2024. I am focusing on boosting my tactical efficiency and brought this little gem to kick start my effort. Nothing unique about this puzzle. It is midrange difficulty but sort of a test for my audio and video. There is more to come.
Chess in Iowa | Opportunities a Plenty

This week I decided to post a couple videos since I was away last week winning a chess tournament in Des Moines. I might post some of my post game analysis of the event in some following videos but I am still brooding… I should have won that event with a score of 4.5/5 instead of 4/5. Anyways, our game of the week featured an intense game between Evan and Aiden. It was a good pick, it started o...
Chess in Iowa | Perfect Opening with Pawn Odds

This week we tried to add our top player to the mix. He is rated between 1900 and 2000. I wanted to work out a possible handicap to make the game a bit more interesting. He was playing against a 1200 to 1300 that was up for the challenge. He played a great opening and seemed like he might hold the advantage but the 800 point skilled gap proved to be overwhelming. Music: Time Passing By - Audion...

This was a weekend chess club meeting I hosted in Tiffin. It was a very close matchup despite the strange ending to this game. I will likely be posting higher caliber games in the coming weeks because my next stop is the St. Louis Chess Club. I intend on hanging around that location for a week until I head off to my next tournament in Nashville, Tennessee. The big one takes place two weeks afte...
Chess in Iowa | Preparing for the Grunfeld

This video features a brief preparation of a match I was preparing my student for. The opponent will be rated in the mid-2200s and it will be an incredible victory if she is capable of executing from the setup featured in this video.
Chess in Iowa | Inside my Chess Club

Yes, there was a huge gap between my previous post (~ 2weeks) but I am working out a new idea that features the inner workings of my chess club. Now, I do plan on participating in big tournaments but this will have to wait until the end of the month when I may have the pleasure of competing against Fabiano Caruana (world #4)! That is in the works!
Chess in Iowa | Rethinking the Anti Sicilians
มุมมอง 453 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had a tough game at my promising event in the Quad Cities but I am planning to ease up my preparation to make certain I beat my weaker opponents without taking too excessive a risk. Key Position = Alapin Sicilian There are many approaches to the Alapin Sicilian and my aim is to choose the one that provides me the easiest time in the opening. In this short video I am simply explaining the e6-S...
Iowa Chess | Holding off an International Master
มุมมอง 433 หลายเดือนก่อน
During my time in the Quad cities, I played a bunch of inconsistent games, but weirdly enough these games resulted in me coming away with wins and a few draws. One of the games that proved to be my ultimate challenge was being paired against an international master in the final round. My goal was to come away from this tournament with four points out of five and I was up against a man who was v...
Chess Travels | Omaha Meltdown Ouch

Just finished a chess tournament in Omaha Nebraska and didn’t do so hot. I wasn’t feeling myself going into the event and playing the entire day did not help the cause. Well, I provided one snippet of a game to go through (key position) and show you where my mind was this event. I will be redeeming myself in a highly important qualifier next weekend and will make sure I bring my A-game.
Northern Open 2024 | Chess in Roseville | Round 4
มุมมอง 414 หลายเดือนก่อน
My round 3 game was a short 4 move draw (me playing black). I kinda wish I played the game because my following round didn’t do me too well. I played a 2100 round 4 and was doing pretty good until I blundered the game away in the late middle game. This has been a fortunate mishap because I complained tournament after tournament that my calculation inefficiency was going to catch up to me someda...
Northern Open 2024 | Chess in Roseville | Round 2
มุมมอง 324 หลายเดือนก่อน
My round 2 started extremely well but got up pretty shake towards the end of the game. I am beginning to think it had more to do with my calculating efficiency than my hunger, despite my in the moment rationale. The game ended with a victory but it did not display the execution needed to compete for first place. I am happy with my progress with the London though… It was a near flawless executio...

Minneapolis Chess | London System Success | 2230 - 2238
มุมมอง 184 หลายเดือนก่อน
I participated in the first of two weekends of chess events in Minneapolis. I scored 4/5 to secure second place with two others. I am a little bummed I didn’t go 4.5 due to a couple draws that I felt were dry and uneventful. I am thinking I may reduce those poor results by adding an opening adjustment to ensure I get a small advantage to try and build on in every game. Actually, I might have tu...
Chess Upgrades | Caro Kann Tal Variant | 5.Bg5?!
มุมมอง 274 หลายเดือนก่อน
The game I played sported an accuracy of 88.2 (I misspoke) and the defense was the Caro Kann. I am a heavy French player but decided that it was a good time to start broadening my defensive repertoire. I am reading on some Sicilians and King Pawn defense as well but maybe I think I might be better suited playing the French and Caro since they are so similar. Anyways, I am killing time before a ...
