The Tripods 40th Anniversary The Music of Ken Freeman and Interview with Jim Baker
We take a sidestep from Doctor Who this time and enter the world of The Tripods television series, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this month.
We'll be joined by Chris Jones, author of the forthcoming book "All For Nothing?", which will be released at a special Tripods fan event next week. The event will also feature appearances from all four principal cast members, together for the very first time since the show was filmed, as well as other cast and production crew.
We are also joined by Tripods superfan Will Hadcroft, better known to Doctor Who fans by his audio dramas The Resurrection Plant and Dark Contract.
To "cap" it off, we'll have a special focus on the sensational soundtrack for The Tripods, composed and arranged by Ken Freeman.
Theme music by Joe Kraemer and Ken Freeman.

    I always have said had Brian Croucher been given the role of an entirely new character in series 2 of B7, as a new henchman to arch-enemy Servalan who was by far a more interesting villain and character than Travis good as Stephen Greif was as Travis Servalan was by far more interesting than Travis. I say Colin Baker who played the villain Bayban the Butcher in series C episode of B7 City at the Edge of the World went to drama school with Brian Croucher and they are great mates they did a convention in Bedford which I sadly did not get to and also at the convention was David Banks the Cyberleader from 80s Dr Who also Sophie Aldred and Terry Molloy .The fact travis was killed off in the series B finale of b7 was no loss if he had died in series A finale when Stephen Greif was in the role it would have been much better than continuing with an established character played by another actor had Croucher been a completely new character altogether he would have been much better served in billions of ways and series B would have been better as well.

    Fascinating that Ken Freeman based the theme on Holst's Mars The War-bringer. The same piece influenced Dudley Simpson's creation of the Blake's 7 theme. Ken Freeman also created the original theme for Casualty in 1986. Quite a different proposition altogether.

    • @TheWillHadcroft
      @TheWillHadcroft 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I recall someone writing in to the BBC's Viewer opinion show "Points of View" asking if Ken had composed the theme to Casualty, as his style was unmistakable. Even the differences between the opening and closing themes mirrored what he'd done with The Tripods.

    I was 14 too back in 84. Great series overall. Agree with Will, series 1 is better as 50 minute chunks. Inevitably Michael Grade didn't like it. So stupid to cancel a trilogy two thirds of the way in! Better to have taken a punt and given us that last series, which if well promoted could have found an audience. The Saturday teatime slot didn't help. Had it been three series of 6x50 minutes, perhaps screened on Saturday or Sunday about 7pm it might just have worked.

    • @TheWillHadcroft
      @TheWillHadcroft 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Or 6 x 25 minutes per book with no additional storylines ... I think producer Richard Bates sold it to the BBC as three seasons of 13 so it could be marketed overseas, and especially to the United States. But 18 episodes would have told the full story, wouldn't it?

    In Tom Baker's Autobiography, "Who is Tom Baker", he wrote about once acting with Pamela Salem in a theatre production. He remarked that she was so beautiful, that when she came on stage, there was such an intake of breath from the audience that all the oxygen was sucked off the stage and all the actors passed out. Such a funny story, yet a testament to the high esteem with which her peers held her. The book is a brilliant read if you haven't already done so.

    Really enjoyed these , the Lost Stories can be hot and miss for me, but not these. Had low expectations of Operation Werewolf because of the title I'm not into stuff with Werewolves so it was a nice surprise to find it was actually a sort of Historical , reminded me a little of the NA book Just War . Deathworld was fun , a look into a version of The Three Doctors where Hartnell would have been more active. Really into the recast 2nd and 3rd Doctors, I don't dislike the new 1st, he's a good actor , just can't see The 1st Doctor, so in my minds eye he's more like a 'sideways' version from another dimension, like the one in The Five Doctors .

      @AudioSirens 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @AndyRossim I've got to push back on you there. Yes, I'm biased as Stephen is a friend. However, we only became friends after he recorded the first Doctor. His rendition carries the idiosyncrasies of the first Doctor so closely it defies belief. This IS the first Doctor, just as William Hartnell envisioned him way back in the 60s. It defies belief that anyone can say they can't hear the Doctor in this performance. We are fortunate to have such a talent in the role who is not only dedicated to the role, but is also a fan of the show. The care taken in the performance is more than you could possibly imagine. And yes, I'll be expecting a cheque in the mail from Stephen after this comment. But seriously, Stephen has perfected the rhythm of the first Doctor unlike Hurndall or Bradley. I recommend you listen again.

    • @AndyRossism
      @AndyRossism 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I said I was enjoying his work and will continue to do so ! When my first comment was taken was more negative than I meant it to be, I replied to be more positive and clear! I honestly feel you've come back at me a tad strong here I have to say, you don't know what I am capable or not capable of imagining when it comes to an Actor's prep work or research ! I even noted his intelligent use of 'Fluffs' , I can name the very episode he must have had in mind when he did one in the story! Even when it's an actual impressionist like Jon Culshaw , or someone like Micheal Troughton , or Sadie Millar, I don't always have a 'TV accurate ' image as I listen, sometimes it 'sharpens ' , sometimes it's more vague , as with all the audio listening I do. Sometimes it can be a tiny thing, like Daisy Ashford's occasionally slipping in just a little bit of Yorkshire accent In, which is in her Mother's acting as Liz but not obvious. Only a few stories of Stephen's First Doctor have been released , I've got them all and story by story, I'm getting more into it. I can't help it if I need time with a recast to adjust , I don't always have a constant perfect image of someone passed away in my 'Minds Eye ' as I listen, I don't need a spot on Impression, just a good actor giving a good performance thats in line with the character as the original actor realised it , and I have that. I enjoy both David Bradley's take on the character , and now Stephen's too. I respect your speaking up for a friend, but I do think you've went a bit strong at me , especially when I'm just a new viewer of , for me, your recently discovered podcast . I mean the frankly, very Trump-ish 'you can't possibly imagine ' bit , and the passive aggressive suggestion to listen more. Maybe that wasn't your intended tone at all, if not, well then both of us have been misunderstood in an Internet interaction! Anyway I'm going on too much (blame MY ADHD and Autism if you want, I will!) and it's frustrating having to type out something I'd rather say with all the friendly nuance of real conversation but I felt I had to push back a little on your pushback and I hope I've convinced someone that at least I'm trying to be sincere here and am enjoying your friend's work. Thanks for reading thus far, if you did. Best wishes from Newcastle , UK

    I also have started to try and avoid all behind the scenes or promo chat and I think that has def helped me enjoy it more, I avoided trailers, all sorts . Used to like listening to RTD wax lyrical on anything but now I try to tune it all out. With my favs 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble I didn't know a single thing about what I was getting into and I loved that . I think RTD means well but is too off the cuff in how he talks about certain things and I say this as a gay man who came of age with Queer as Folk and I've sometimes been joyed at his uncompromising takes on stuff but things like the Davros statement (not the actual minisode itself) got my back up a bit. He speaks on behalf of groups he isn't part of, has back projected racism into the actual character of The Celestial Toymaker , none of which I agree with. Though I still find myself less despondent about the current state of things than your guest bottom right square! Maybe I'm more 'Right On' than I think !

    I'll fight for 73 Yards being the best bit of TV Who and tv in general for years , the most recent series had one of my all time least liked episodes, but it also had Dot and Bubble which I really like and as I said, 72 Yards which I think was an astonishing watch. I'm 43 and in Who fandom and life in general find myself torn between the younger so called Woke take, and the older more critical position and I think both broad groups can be intolerant and too quick to judge or make their minds up.

    I enjoyed Goth Opera, it wasn't one of my fav M.A's books, but I enjoyed the adaptation. Just a pity its had some production mistakes at the same time as BF's website problems . They are going to release a 'fixed' version this month (Aug) ..I think. The incorrect end titles music and door sounds really threw me off in the moment which was a pity. It's quite funny though, I seem to have really been into the NA and MA books which are least likely to ever be adapted, as they were either too weird or not popular enough! (I have a 'auto-read' audio book of The Man in the Velvet Mask! Makes me wish we could maybe get more full readings in liue of BF adaptations like they did with Human Nature )

    I'm not a fan of just Nyssa and Tegan audio adventures. I feel like they need Adric. It's not like just those two were alone in many episodes. Maybe three which weren't that great. LOL!!! Nor were they with Turlough long either. Big Finish just doesn't want to pay for it.

    Nicola Bryant is always a pleasure to see (and hear) perform as well as her interviews and convention appearances. I just saw her in The Wilds and she was absolutely brilliant and quite hilarious. Growing up in the 80's I assumed she was American. I love hearing her story about having to pretend to actually be American through the Doctor Who auditions and then during her stint on the show since her agent was never willing to admit she was British. In her interview with Matthew Sweet she mentions that she started dialing back her accent in some situations such as her first Breakfast Time interview when she had won the part. I think there are even more layers to this story that I hope Nicola will share someday. On the Season 22 and 23 Bluray collections released over the last couple years, I came across two bonus materials on the discs with her speaking in her British accent while she was still working on the show. The first is some studio footage taken during the production of The Two Doctors. It's called Convention Message and it's right after they finish the last scene of the episode. After they wrap the scene they reposition cameras and equipment and Nicola stands on the stairs while everyone is moving things around. You hear her say hello to someone and "alright" and states "I don't know my lines for this". All of this is in her British accent. Then she's joined by Frazer Hines and quietly tells him "no I can't move over, I was told to stand here" in what sounds like it could be her American Peri voice. The two of them then make "apologies" that they won't be at an upcoming convention due to being on holiday. Here Nicola is in full-on American accent while Frazer has dropped his Scottish accent. It's really an adorable clip to watch. In the Season 23 Collection there's another Breakfast Time clip on the Mindwarp disc. It's a short clip when Nicola, John Nathan Turner, and Janet Fielding. The hostess interviews Janet first and she sounds positively British! I had to look her up again to see that she really was an Australian actress. Then they move to John Nathan Turner. Finally they bring on Nicola and show a scene from (the upcoming at that time) Mindwarp stating it will be her last for the show. Nicola makes no attempt to hide her British accent here. It made me wonder, if JNT really didn't know she was British at that point and was sitting on the sofa in total shock. I rather suspect she had dialed her accent back bit by bit over time. I figured she probably could have claimed at the time that she had just picked up a British accent after living in the UK for the 3 years while working on the show. Who knows but I'd love to hear more!
