Proton VPN used to be a good option for those who could not afford expensive premiums every month and/or needed to evade fascist regional censorship. As Proton's commitment to "provide internet security to everyone, regardless of economic status." However, with the recent update around 3-1-24, a user can no longer work around regional censorship by connecting to one of the three [3] free servers themselves [Japan, Netherlands, United States]. Proton now chooses which server a user connects to, which is in the same region. Leaving users in heavily censored regions and those without economic security without secure internet access. Like too many other companies, Proton has now become an elitist service and another model of corporate greed. Likewise, Proton's Development Staff replies to users about this very issue are basically, "Live with it, f*ck off." I would recommend all users of Proton VPN & Mail to find another service that actually stands behind their motto and model of service. Only when companies file bankruptcy do they themselves experience and appreciate the consequences of corporate greed, and only the consumer has this power.

This video is updated 2024. The latest update of PROTON VPN has included more servers and more countries, it now has 249 servers and 5 countries: United States, Japan, Netherlands, Poland and Romania. BUT they eliminated the manual selection of countries, now it is automatic, once you connect in: “Quick Connection” just below there is a button to change location to one of these 5 free countries, but it is random.

This usually happens when you have the Kill switch activated in the “permanent” option. With this option activated, the internet will only work when you activate the VPN. It is a security feature that all good VPNs have, but you can, as I show in the video, set it to only when the VPN is used or disable it.
