York Minster - working on the 32ft reed
มุมมอง 1.5K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Director of Music, Robert Sharpe visited us earlier this week to catch up with progress in the workshop. After asking how hard it was, Robert was duly handed a beater to have a go for himself. Here he is with our Metalshop Foreman, Nigel rounding out a tip section of BBBB from the new 32ft Double Ophicleide. This stop will be the ninth and largest scale 32ft reed Nigel has made to date - 323mm ...

There's so much work that goes into this. And I'll have honour of playing this pipe.
Awesome stuff.
Hi
Thanks for showing us insight into these builds. Keep them coming. One suggestion please film in landscape ie turn the camera (phone?) through 90° wewouldbe able to appreciate it more. Cheers Peter
What an impressive instrument!
Was that a sharp(e), or a natural??🤣
Pouzoune is basically German trumpet reeds and Corneo de Basetto is a basset horn, basically a type of clarinet Reed?
I am wondering why there is no cover between the roofing and the pipes. What if a single shingle goes bust? Water dripping onto the ranks and possibly not being discovered emmediatly could do a lot of harm no? Further, does surface of the roofing, not being smooth, swallow the sound?
That solo reed is NICE ! Bold and fills the room
Pipes without nicks would give a better pipe attack transient - more like a Marcussen organ.
Appears to be precision engineering !?
Appears to be a rather oversized tin whistle.
Looks like a big tin whistle !
That's essentially what it is and 61 one of them makes a rank.
@@cornwalldragon4617 ... all chiffing along nicely !
CHAMP connectors! Brings back memories.
I don’t know who the voicer is but I love his accent. I’m also from Durham but lived in the south from 18 years old, then moved to the US where I’ve been for the last 27 years. God only knows what I sound like these days!

Do you guys make all of your own pipework?
We all know that doesn’t mean they still do lol. Many of the so called “famous” organ builders of the world have begun to outsource pipework in certain places to cut down on labor costs and save time.
Harrison in my eyes has always been a symbol of excellence and quality. I was merely curious to see if they still made all their pipework because let’s face it, skilled labor is expensive, and sometimes (not always if your shop is big enough with enough guys working) it’s a little cheaper when the labor cost is someone else’s problem who focuses all their attention on making pipes.
@@jamesp8391 Harrisons make their own pipework. They have a very large workshop in Durham England where all the organs are made. For more information here is the official website: www.harrisonorgans.com/ The number of organ builders in England is relatively small, but as far as I'm aware they all make their own pipework. Each organ builder have their own traditions in terms of voicing and scaling, for instance a Harrison tuba stop is voiced in a different way compared to a Hill tuba. In England at least, 'outsourcing' of pipework is inconceivable, except where more than one organ builder may be involved in a large scale project.
Impressive
The nave organ is a work of art also...
Respect...
Genius. Just looks at the camera non-chalantly to finish
Gorgeous!
I'm blown away by how good this instruments sounds!! Much envy from America!
This organ is one of my favourite organs in the UK since I heard it for the first time being 14 yo in 1986. Thank you so much for your videos. In my next life I want to become an organ builder with Harrison and Harrison! Greetings from Germany 🙏🏻♥️
Fascinating insight - what’s the significance of the paint design?
When will the other half of the organ be installed by???
Excellent tour, looking very forward to the opening recital, Thankyou for your great work on our wonderful Cathedral organs.
Chasing info on Cathedrals Organ, Cymatics, Resonators...?
Awesome tour. Many thanks. Keep up the great work 👍
Love these vids ! 💖
Beautiful job of voicing Andrew you really are the expert 👍
Beautiful sounds, both individual ranks & in chorus
Thanks, Andrew! So interesting to see all the compromises you've made in the layout whilst retaining room to work
What a great series, & superb work. Thanks for these & please keep them coming, Andrew!
Thanks for the insight!
Is there a standard number of turns or distance for the scroll?
Thanks for the great detail - fascinating. Such a big improvement in speech, character & power
That's exacting & admirable work - great to see!
