The story of the twelve spies is found in Numbers 13-14.
God instructed Moses to send twelve men, one from each tribe of Israel, to scout the land of Canaan, the land He had promised to the Israelites. The spies explored the land for 40 days, observing its richness and strength. They discovered that the land was indeed fertile, "flowing with milk and honey," and brought back a cluster of grapes so large that it had to be carried on a pole between two men.
However, ten of the spies gave a negative report, focusing on the fortified cities and the giants (the descendants of Anak) who lived there. They declared that conquering the land was impossible, causing fear and doubt among the Israelites. In contrast, two spies, Caleb and Joshua, urged the people to trust in God, assuring them that He would give them victory over the inhabitants of Canaan.
Unfortunately, the Israelites believed the fearful report of the ten spies, rebelled against Moses, and expressed a desire to return to Egypt. As a result of their lack of faith, God condemned that generation to wander in the wilderness for 40 years until all the adults, except Caleb and Joshua, had died.
The story underscores themes of faith, trust in God's promises, and the consequences of fear and disobedience.
