Interesting… as a child of the 70/80s in England I was excited for the graphic novel of Watership Down but had trouble connecting to the illustrations. Makes more sense now I find out the artist is not from the UK. The Britishness is gone from the book but I am still enjoying it well enough so far, and it’s prolly not something any reader outside the UK would have noticed I expect. But I looked this up because the aesthetic seemed odd / unexpected.

This is a great overview of many pitfalls in lettering from a cartoonist who has experience making comics and teaching comics. I especially think the word shapes within balloons is something that is in many comics overlooked. Emi Gennis' 2021 CXC talk about hand lettering is also interesting and informative.

This talk finally convinced me to activate my SubStack account to start posting. I plan to use mine as an extension of my website to mirror my blog just in case SubStack at some point gets a CMO or CEO who says "let's make it like X" and the ship starts sinking. The whole Twitter debacle/fiasco, compounded with whispers about Elon maybe using user content to train Ai image generators for xAi, finally pushed me to make a blog on my website. Not to mention how Instagram is just full of bots now. You were on point to say that social platforms are not built to convert likes/follows into sales for artists, and that at any moment some of these platforms could go POOF. This is why moving forward I'm trying to invest more time posting to my blog, SubStack, and Patreon. So thank you for taking the time to share your experience and expertise on the subject of using SubStack and the pitfalls for social media in general.

I’m glad it was of some help. I, too, live in fear of the platform being purchased, and changing direction -which is not uncommon these days It is for that reason that I am most enamored of the export function they have allowed users to have If they ever feel like migrating to something else, they are free to do so You can also export your Substack posts if you want to archive them elsewhere . I’m not sure if I mentioned this in the talk.
